Chemistry department was one of the seven departments established when the university was founded in 1955. Initially, the department focused on undergraduate education with small class sizes, emphasizing both theory and experimentation to build a strong foundation of knowledge for advanced research. The department also emphasized cultivating students' character, in line with the school's spirit of "truth-seeking, faithfulness, and practicality." Since 1972, the department has shifted towards a greater emphasis on research, with the establishment of the Applied Chemistry graduate program, and the addition of a PhD program in 2001. The department's research now focuses mainly on biological systems. To meet the needs of the research programs and workforce, a biochemical stream was added to the undergraduate curriculum in 2005. While the department continues to prioritize undergraduate education, with a focus on building a strong theoretical foundation, research is the primary focus of the graduate programs, with a commitment to high-quality research.
Based on the tradition of valuing teaching, the teachers in our department have strict requirements for the courses they teach. In addition to disseminating chemical knowledge, they also encourage students to engage in special research and guide them to participate in research work in the field of chemistry. After the establishment of the master's program, the requirements for teaching quality have not been relaxed, and research has been further strengthened. The teachers actively engage in research in their respective fields of expertise and strive to secure funding from external sources. Currently, the department's annual research funding exceeds 10 million dollors.
The department places great importance on academic exchanges and regularly invites scholars from outside the university (both domestic and international) to give lectures, about 10 to 12 times per semester, to broaden the professional knowledge of both the speakers and the audience. In addition, when the department's alumni visit the university during their stay abroad serving in the industry or academia, they are invited to give academic speeches and have discussions with undergraduate and graduate students in the department. Through these exchanges, students are able to learn from and absorb new knowledge and experiences.
