While traveling to different small towns that are right outside the “Velvet Ditch,” I couldn’t help but notice how quaint, charming and peaceful the towns were. So close in distance to the hustle and bustle that we see everyday in Oxford, these towns and its people are so content with their slow moving lifestyles. Upon arriving in Water Valley, Mississippi, just thirty minutes South of Oxford, there is a darling downtown Main Street lined with architecture dated back to the 19th century. Within these buildings are some of Water Valley's most beloved small businesses. Similar to the "Hallmark" feel of Oxford, yet far less crowded and populated.
As a small business supporter, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight small businesses located on Water Valley’s Main Street. Within my Capstone project, you will find some of Water Valley’s most valued small businesses through photographs and self-narrated profiles. This project explores how local entrepreneurs preserve Southern traditions while adapting to modern challenges. Main Street Enterprise celebrates the creativity, resilience, and sense of community that define small-town Southern living, and highlights how businesses contribute to the economic and cultural development of Water Valley, reflecting community and heritage.

In 2010, this historic brick building bought and re-purposed into a grocery store, restaurant, and antique shop all in one.
Where farm fresh meets the table, B.T.C. offers local, fresh-picked groceries. B.T.C. offers to-go and dine-in dished, homemade backed goods, and more.
Their options always vary and depend on what was grown and picked that morning. Their offerings are mainly harvested in Oxford and the Delta. As stated on their home webpage, "You never know what you might find that was picked that morning at the B.T.C.!"

This family-owned and operated coffee shop is tucked inside it's gorgeous, scenic patio entrance. Joe and Caitlin Magnuson share their story on their website, about how they moved to Water Valley from Washington State in the summer of 2022. The welcoming atmosphere they have created within Magnolia Coffee Co. has made them stand out amongst other small businesses down Water Valley's Main Street.
They also mention, "Most of the time we feel like we are living a fairytale. God has blessed our family time and time again, and we are excited for the opportunity to do the same for the community of Water Valley."

Since 1905, this family owned and operated business has been serving the people of Water Valley as a full-service pharmacy with a vintage soda fountain, gift shop, and a welcoming atmosphere. The family business is built on customer service, and treating customers with care. Additionally, Turnage Drug Store also includes a restored vintage telephone allowing customers listen to Binnie Turnage, a third generation pharmacist, share stories about the drug store's history.

Hummingbird Bakery is located at the end of Main Street, and serves the Water Valley community homemade baked goods, fresh pastries, sourdough bread, and locally handmade art. I got to talk to the sweet Owner and founder of Hummingbird Bakery, who told me she turned her baking passion into a business after her children grew older. Only open Wednesday-Saturday, Hummingbird Bakery has become a beloved part of the downtown small business scene.
Hummingbird Bakery is located inside the Hendricks Building / Venue, which dates back to being built around 1860. The building eventually become one of the first Ford Dealerships in the United States.

Walking south-bound on Main Street, you might come across this hidden gem that you won't want to miss.
Inside is an art gallery, and features dozens of paintings and artwork from several collections - all from one artist.
When you walk inside, you'll be greeted by a man named Zoran Crnkovic - a talented artist who recently moved to Water Valley from New York to "get a piece of mind."
Zoran was born in Croatia before he moved to New York. In the 1990's he began working as an artist in a studio in the South Bronx.
Zoran is a long-time teacher and innovator in meditative practices, and uses his artistic ability to demonstrate philosophical concepts and ideas.
I got the opportunity to speak with Zoran personally, and he talked to me about his life in New York to his journey that landed him in a town that is microscopic compared to the South Bronx.
He told me that he moved from New York because he did not like all of the hustle and bustle, and wanted to relocate to a slow, small-town.
Zoran's work has been featured in museums like the MOMA, the Queens Museum of Art, Burning Man, and the Lower East Side Howl Festival.
In the photo to the left, Zoran stands near some of his City Scapes, which exhibit color, light, and texture.
As I walked around the Gallery with Zoran, he asked me a lot of philosophical questions, which related to concepts that inspired many of his pieces.
Zoran now splits his time between New York and Water Valley - two places that are completely opposite in population, but both rich in culture.
My name is Ella Koecke, and I am a Southern Studies Undergraduate student at the University of Mississippi, on track to graduate in May of 2026.
Because I am originally from Franklin, Tennessee, I did not know much about the state of Mississippi before coming to Ole Miss, but I did know a lot about "The South." After almost completing my undergraduate degree, I can fully agree with what William Faulkner once said: "To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi." This state has given me some of the greatest opportunities I've ever received, some of the kindest people I've ever met, and some of the most beautiful sites I've ever seen.
This project has given me an opportunity to highlight a place that is so rich in history and unique in atmosphere, and I can proudly say I won't ever forget it. Now that I understand a place like Mississippi, I can understand the world on a whole other level.
Thank you!
