Wind Symphony is the Varsity seventh and eighth grade performing ensemble. Placement in this band is determined by student auditions in May of the preceding year. In the fall, Wind Symphony rehearsals focus on fundamentals, Pep Band performances, and the Fall Concert. During the winter and spring, the Wind Symphony prepares for concerts and contests.
Wind Symphony meets daily during fourth period. We require each member to attend a one-hour sectional once a week to work on individual and small group skill development as well as a one-hour full band rehearsal on Wednesday mornings. Should the director feel it is necessary, practice records and/or Objective Sheets may be required. Daily Wind Symphony rehearsals concentrate on the intermediate and advanced concepts of individual and ensemble performance. We require all Wind Symphony members to audition for the All-District and All-Region Bands. Members are encouraged to perform solos and are required to perform in ensembles at the LISD Solo and Ensemble Contest. Private lessons are strongly encouraged.
We treat Wind Symphony as a Pre-AP class. Students are held to a higher standard. Students that consistently fail to meet the academic and performance standards of a Wind Symphony student may be moved at the directors’ discretion to Symphonic Band after parental contact has been made.
Symphonic Band is the Non -Varsity seventh and eighth grade performing ensemble. Placement in this band is determined by student auditions in May of the preceding year. In the fall, Symphonic Band rehearsals focus on fundamentals, Pep Band performances, and the Fall Concert. During the winter and spring, the Symphonic Band prepares for concerts and contests in and outside the district.
Symphonic Band meets daily during third period. We require each member to attend a one-hour sectional once a week to work on individual and small group skill development. Should the director feel it is necessary, practice records and/or Objective Sheets may be required. Daily Symphonic Band rehearsals concentrate on the fundamental aspects of performing music.
We strongly encourage Symphonic Band students to audition for All-District and All-Region Bands. We also encourage members to participate in the LISD Solo and Ensemble Contest each year. Private lessons are encouraged.
All Symphonic Band students have an opportunity in the fall to become a member of Wind Symphony. If a Symphonic Band member makes either the All- District or All-Region Band, that student will be considered for placement in Wind Symphony.
In addition, Symphonic Band students that consistently fail to meet the minimum requirements for that performing group may be removed at the directors’ discretion from the program after parental contact has been made.
Intermediate Band is the Sub-Non-Varsity seventh and eighth grade ensemble. Placement in this band is determined by student auditions in May of the preceding year. Intermediate Band is a smaller setting, allowing for more a smaller student to teacher ratio. Students in Intermediate Band will focus on many of the concepts and skills taught in Beginning Band. Performances are a vital part of the band experience. Because of this, Intermediate Band Members will have opportunities to perform with Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Beginning Band. In December, all Intermediate Band students will perform a similar audition to the band audition that all students perform in May. This allows for students that have progressed to a performance band level to move to Symphonic Band.
Jazz Band is meant to be a supplemental class for students that are currently enrolled in another performing band class. This means students must be enrolled in either Wind Symphony or Symphonic Band in order to be in Jazz Band. Jazz Band at Huffines is meant to enhance our students’ band experience by exposing them to the nuances of jazz music, including a wide range of jazz genres and the art of improvisation. Additionally, students further enhance their performance skills on their instrument by becoming more independent readers and having additional class time to further develop their skills as an instrumentalist. Students that are not able to enroll in the Jazz Band class may participate by attending Jazz Band during Block Club times at the director’s discretion.
The Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Intermediate Band combine together to create the Huffines Pep Band. All seventh and eighth grade students perform in this ensemble. The Pep Band performs at Pep Rallies and selected athletic events. All students must “pass-off” all Pep Band music in order to participate in Pep Band performances and activities.
Beginning Band is the first opportunity students have to join the Huffines’ band program. We require no previous musical experience of any kind and enrollment is open to all sixth grade students. We divide Beginning Band into several classes of “like-instrument” groups. Dividing classes allows specialized instruction on each instrument and increases the opportunity for individual student success. When possible, we utilize the specialty of our high school band staff from Lewisville High School.
Rehearsals outside the school day for the Beginning Band are rare - four to six times throughout the year. We will meet together before our Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and in preparation for our beginning band contest in the spring. Letters will be sent home in advance with specific dates and times.
