EAL

English as an Additional Language

Mrs. Sonia Yazbek

HELLO and WELCOME!

Thank you for visiting my web space. I created it to be able to share EAL topics, activities and resources for my students, their parents and their teachers. This site will hopefully keep you motivated and inspired by language learning and also support with language learning through content areas.

WHAT IS EAL?

EAL is short for English as an Additional Language. It is a term we use in our schools to describe English language learning and support for newcomers to Canada who are learning English through content areas (various subjects: Math, Science, English Language Arts, etc.). In the past, it was called ESL, or English as a Second language. The term has changed since many of our newcomers are actually learning English not only as their second language, but possibly their third, fourth even fifth. Some EAL students began learning English in their home country and are continuing their learning here in Canada and other EAL students are completely new to English.

HOLD ONTO YOUR HOME LANGUAGE

While learning content in English, and also learning English, I always encourage my students to continue to hold onto their home language(s). The language you come with is a part of who you are, and it should be protected. Speaking your home language at home, with friends and family will not make learning English harder for you. Being multilingual is an asset here in Canada and will only open doors for you, both personally and professionally.
