Course Outline

Course Description

The French 10 Pre-IB course is designed to prepare students who are interested in enrolling in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program by offering opportunity for an advanced level of oral and written expression. Students are engaged in activities through oral interaction, oral production, written comprehension and written production. Throughout the course, students are introduced to dialogues, simulations, poetry, short stories and newpaper articles. French 10 Pre-IB students will develop an understanding of la Francophonie and an appreciation of French culture.

GENERAL CURRICULUM OUTCOMES for French 10 Pre-IB

By the end of Grade 10, students will be expected to:

1. exchange ideas and thoughts in French about areas of personal interest

2. recognize cultural expression unique to French in authentic documents

3. identify and examine their own customs, and discuss similarities and differences when

compared to French culture

4. explain the importance of bilingualism in our country

5. interact effectively in situations drawn from real life

6. research, analyze, and use relevant information from several sources on a chosen topic to

complete authentic tasks

COURSE CONTENT and STUDENT EVALUATION

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:

Students will require the following for each class:

  • -three-ring binder with loose-leaf
  • -pens/pencils
  • -French/English dictionary for home use
  • -Bescherelle verb book or equivalent

Students are encouraged to bring a positive attitude to class, participate with enthusiasm and be respectful of the language learning process. Students should make every effort to speak French in class. Texts include Voyage 1 and Nouvelle Frontières.

Themes/evaluation:

Unit 1 (35%) - Les restaurants (menus/designing a restaurant & menu – Festival culinaire français)

Unit 2 (30%) -Souvenirs d’enfance ( memories of childhood; writing in the past tense)

Unit 3 - (35%) La publicité (the power of advertising) (making a video advertisement)

Grammar :

Le présent, le passé composé, l’imparfait, le futur/futur proche, les adjectifs possessifs/ irréguliers, les adverbes, le genre des noms, les verbes pronominaux au présent, les pronoms COD/COI au présent.

Extra help : Tuesday or Thursday at lunch, room 101. Or by special request

Assessment:

Evaluation is both formative and summative. Formative evaluation occurs throughout the learning experience and includes quizzes, checklists, form and informal dialogues and discussions in French. Summative evaluation occurs at the end of the structured learning experience and includes unit tests, projects, formal presentations and oral interviews.
