APPLYING to UNIVERSITY
University applications open in early to mid-October. Applications are completed on the website of the university you want to attend.
There is NO RUSH to get your application in early in the fall.
Many universities will offer the opportunity to apply without paying the application fee if you attend an open house at their campus OR attend a session held at NRHS. (See the board outside of student services for dates.)
You should aim to ensure your application is completed by the end of January 2023.
You should definitely complete your applications before your university’s scholarship cutoff date! For the majority of universities in Atlantic Canada that is March 1. (Some are earlier.)
When applying to a Nova Scotia University – please include your ten-digit student ID number that is shown next to your name when you log into PowerSchool on the Website.
APPLYING to NSCC
NSCC Applications open in September of your GRADE 11 year.
NSCC acceptance is based on the date of your application. Some programs have waiting lists. If you have not applied, you are encouraged to do so early in your grade 12 year. Visit nscc.ca/apply to complete the application. (Fee is $25)
When applying to NSCC – please include your ten-digit student ID number that is shown next to your name when you log into PowerSchool on the Website.
NOTE: You can book an appointment with Ms. Brown if you would like support with this application.
TRANSCRIPTS
A transcript shows the grades you earned in your grade 10 and 11 years. It also shows the classes you are enrolled in for this year.
For your current courses, grades will show as “In Progress” until your November report card. Then they will stay at that report card grade until your January final grade is stored. Transcripts do NOT change every time your teacher enters an assignment in Power School.
You do NOT need to send your transcript to any Nova Scotia University or NSCC. Those schools can access them through the My Transcript electronic system.
If you need a transcript sent directly to another post-secondary school or another organization, email Ms. Brown with the information as to where you would like it sent: brownk@ccrce.ca
All students will be given an unofficial copy of their transcript to use for scholarship applications at the sessions held by Ms. Brown in early October.
Grade 12 SCHOOL COUNSELLING
Ms. Brown will be visiting all English 12 and English Communication 12 classrooms in early October. She will expand on many of the topics in this brochure.
If your English 12 or English Communications 12 class is not scheduled for first semester, you will receive an invitation to attend a session during your STUDY period. Keep watch on your GNSPES EMAIL for details.
If you are not in English this semester, and you do not have a study period this semester, you will receive an invitation to join a session during another class time. Keep watch on your GNSPES EMAIL for details.
AFTER these presentations, ALL grade 12s are encouraged to sit down with Ms. Brown.
You may want to talk about any/all of the following:
Whether you are generally on track for graduation
Whether you have the pre-requisites for your post-secondary programs and/or brainstorming how to get courses you might be missing.
Your ideas and plans for the future (or your lack of ideas and plans)!
Answering general questions about issues you are having with applications to post-secondary schools and scholarships.
Academic and/or personal struggles you are facing in your graduation year.
Generally helping alleviate your anxiety about whatever is causing you stress in your grade 12 year!
