Course Outline

Speaking French

For students taking French, the expectation of the HRCE is that communication in the classroom will occur in French.  This approach assists students with the acquisition and development of their second language and promotes the integrity of a French speaking environment. Thus, students will be expected to speak, read and write in French at all times to the best of their ability.

The curricular outcomes that we will be examining this year are as follows:

Curricular themes and strands for Healthy Living

Supplies for the beginning of the year:

-1 green Hilroy scribbler

-1green duotang

-1 green two pocket folder

-Pens for correction (any colour but red)

Supplies for every class:

-Pencils (preferable to pens for written work as they facilitate easy correction and differentiate student work from teacher comments and assessment)

-Binder with loose leaf

-Dividers to clearly label difference sections in binder

-Erasers

Additional supplies that need to be accessible at all times:

-Coloued pencils

-Scissors

-Glue stick

-Ruler

Textbooks:

The textbook for Healthy Living 7 is: Objectif santé 1.  Books will not be assigned to students and will be used in class when needed.  Most work will be done in the scribbler, two pocket folder or duotang which will be kept in class.

Absence:

When a student is absent, any handouts will be put aside in the classroom.  It the responsibility of the student to collect any handouts and to make arrangements to get any information or explanations necessary. While the teacher can facilitate the process of obtaining and working with missed information/activities, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure all work/understandings have been finished/obtained. Should the date of the absence coincide with an evaluation that is occurring or due, it is the expectation that the student be prepared to complete or hand in the evaluation that day. If this is not possible, arrangements should be made in advance if possible or as soon as they return.

Homework:

Homework is an effective way for students to practice skills that that have been examined in class, a way to assist students as they prepare for assessments, a strategy to support students in completing some portions of the writing process, a way to consolidate classroom learning through specific activities or through project-based learning, to explore new information in preparation for an upcoming lesson, and a way to facilitate communication between home and school to support student success. Homework will not be busy work or used for discipline or punishment. Thus, it is important that homework is completed on time. Homework will normally be assignment with several days allowed for completion.  The status of homework completion will be noted and this information will be used to complete the Learner Profile on each term’s report card.

Assessment:

Assessment will take place frequently in class. This will give the teacher the opportunity to view student progress in order to plan future lessons and to remediate with students on an individual basis as necessary. Students will have an Evaluation Folder (red duotang) in class that will be used to organise all evaluations work that has been assessed. The Evaluation Folder is expected to be kept in order as per the instructions given in class and will be sent home periodically to parent/guardian signature.  Some examples of how students will be assessed are (but limited to):

-Tests and quizzes

-Assignments and projects

-Skits and oral presentations

 -Journals (reading, writing etc.)

-Teacher observations

-Conferences and conversations with students

 -Listening and Reading comprehension activities

-Self and Peer evaluation

-Etc.

****All in-class assessments must be completed in class.  If additional time is required the student can attend extra-help.  If the student does not come to extra-help to finish and incomplete assignment or do an assignment that was missed due to absence, the students will receive a grade on the work they have provided.  If not work has been provided the mark will be a 1.

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated on a 1-4 scale for all work done in class. An evaluation of 1 or 2 indicates the degree to which the student has not met the outcome and an evaluation of 3 or 4 indicated the degree to which the student has met the outcome.

The only time that this system of evaluation will not be used is when students receive their term report cards with a percentage grade.  The percentage break downs are as follows:

Achievement of Expected Learning Outcomes Grade 8

90 – 100% The student demonstrates excellent or outstanding performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

80 – 89% The student demonstrates very good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

70 – 79% The student demonstrates good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

60 – 69% The student demonstrates satisfactory performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

50 – 59 % The student demonstrates minimally acceptable performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

Below 50% The student has not met minimum requirements in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this course.

Submission of work:

All must be given directly to the teacher by following specific instructions for submission.  Normally, this will be in the indicated basket for completed work or in the work folder (red two-pocket folder) for in-progress work. Any work simply left for the teacher to find will not be assured of reaching its destination. This includes handing work into a substitute teacher, if one is present, placing it under the classroom door or on the teacher desk.  Students are not allowed to take assessments home unless given specific permission by the teacher.  If a student has taken work home it may not be accepted for submission and the work could have to be re-done in class.

Communication of Student Learning:

In order to share information in regards to student achievement (with the student and with home) of the learning outcomes and their progress as to the criteria of the Learner Profile, a variety of methods will be used which include, but are not limited to:

- Assessed work for viewing and signature in Evaluation Folder (primary method)

–PowerSchool (primary method)

-Descriptive written/oral feedback

-Emails/phones calls

-Rubric scores

-Conferencing

In order to share specific assignment scores, the information can be found on PowerSchool. Conferencing and descriptive feedback will be used to confer with students as to their progress and any given time as to curriculum outcomes but may not specifically assess particular assignments.

Updates on what we are examining in class are available on my website. The same site also contains information on due dates and upcoming events at the school. Power School will be updated regularly as to student progress in meeting the curriculum outcomes.

Both students and parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to check all sites regularly. If you have any concerns in regard to the information on my website or PowerSchool please feel free to contact me at any time.

Extra-help

Time is available at lunch after eating.  There will be set times assigned in the month of September when the schedule for extra-curricular activities has been set. However, other times may be available to accommodate student schedules if needed.  Students should let the teacher know if a special time for extra-help is needed so a time could possibly be arranged to suit both parties.
