As a second term flies by, the History department would like to wish all students, parents and peers a restful Easter break. However, whilst our Year 11 and 13 students should take a moment to rest and reflect, it is now the last push before exam season!

This month, we welcomed Year 9 students to explore the wonderful world of GCSE History. They had the opportunity to speak to Year 12 History Ambassadors and explore the four topics studied at GCSE, with the added challenge of guessing the historical periods we focus on from the pictures and artifacts displayed.
Students and staff participated in the annual world book day with many in the department deciding upon the theme of detectives as we in the history team love the notion of an investigative inquiry to discover and find out more. The use of wide ranging literature on the subject of history is very important to us all. It is this that has helped us to create schemes of learning looking at historical narratives. Finding an area of history that we are passionate about is a great way to introduce pupils to reading about history.

Year 11: Battlefields Trip, 31/03 - 01/04
60 year 11 students will be visiting France and Belgium on a Battlefields tour at the beginning of the Easter break. This trip will support their learning of healthcare on the Western Front. Keep an eye out for the next newsletter which will have many more details of how the trip went!
Pupils have been exploring the period known as the age of discovery from the late 15th century to 16th century. This began with a look at the key explorers of the time from Christopher Columbus to Hernan Cortes amongst others. The pupils used sources to examine the key reasons why these explorers went on these voyages of discovery. The pupils then had a look at a case study of the Aztec Empire and the siege of Tenochtitlan. This led to the pupils writing an answer to the question 'Wealth was the main reason for exploration during the age of discovery. how far do you agree?'
Students have spent this half term continuing their study of the First World War. They've been reading Mulk Raj Anand's 'Across the Black Waters' and comparing the experience of literary character Lalu to lives of British and colonial soldiers through using sources. The study concludes with students writing their own section of the book giving them an opportunity to write some historical fiction.
The annual Oral History Project is coming to an end! Students have spent this half term partaking in a project in which they uncover their families' migration stories through interviews. They have explored how to come up with a unique aim as well as how to conduct good interviews. Students have enjoyed the project with one student from 9A stating 'I have learnt not to take things for granted as through the project I learnt more about the hard work of my parents.'
Year 10 have been beginning their study of the American West looking at developments here from the 1830s onward. Particularly looking at the lifestyle of Native Americans, their beliefs and traditions. They have then gone on to look at the reasons why Americans went west with a focus on the Mormon migration and Californian gold rush. Above is an example of the revision students do alongside their current study, to help with upcoming assessments.
Y11 study of 'Weimar and Nazi Germany' has now come to an end and students have begun revising. All classroom teachers applaud the efforts of students and their dedication to the course. The image above shows students attending History iuntervention after school!
The Year 12s come to the end of the topic 'India: the Road to Independence.' They will end by discussing partition and the Radcliff Line. The photograph shows a group of students presenting on the consequences of WWII on the Indian Nationalist movements. Students will also continue their study of 'In Search of the American Dream' into the summer term.
We wish the Y13s the best of the luck for their final few weeks before the exams. They have spent the last few weeks working on their coursework and revising.
Pupils have been looking at the theme of coronation in history in our wonderful history competition. Students have been creating a fictional historical narrative centered around coronation. There will be one overall winner and four runners up. Excitingly, all five will be sent to the Historical Association and compete against entries from around the UK for the grand prize.
Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire
Acclaimed historian Nandini Das examines the British arrival in India in the early 17th century through the story of Thomas Roe, James I’s first ambassador to the Mughal Empire. Das presents her new book at a talk at the British Library; it will be simultaneously live streamed on the British Library platform.
