In Science, this term, 1DC and 1JK have been learning about plants. Pupils enjoyed planting their own bean seeds linking to our story Jack and the Beanstalk.
They have taken great care when caring for and watering our plants. We have learnt about the different parts of a plant and observed and walked around the school to find a range of wild and garden plants.
In Maths, Year 1 pupils have been practising counting in 2s 5s and 10s. With number games and rhymes the children have quickly picked up counting in a new efficient way.
Why not try...
Using 2p, 5p, 10p coins to practice counting
Bounce a ball counting in 2s, 5s or 10s to 100 without dropping the ball
Children have been diving into the world of fractions, focusing on using hands on activities to find half and a quarter of shapes and given amounts. They have been exploring position and direction through playful activities including following instructions and following a map.

Make a map and write some instructions using positional language e.g. above, below, forwards, backwards, left and right
Our amazing mechanics designed and created their vehicles in our Design and Technology lessons this term. Pupils first learnt that all vehicles need an axle and axle holder and investigated this. They then spent time crafting their vehicle ensuring the the wheels were round and balanced. Take a look at some of the creative vehicles,
Year 1 enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the GNSA library. It was wonderful to see the children's enthusiasm and laughter whilst sharing books with their friends and teachers.
All Year 1 pupils have been working extremely hard to prepare for the upcoming Phonics Screening Check which will take place immediately after the half term holidays - week beginning Monday 10th June 2024. Please continue to support your child at home in practising using their sounds to read as much as possible, especially the words provided each week for homework practice.
We will be sending more practice words over the half term holidays!
Thank you for your ongoing support. All pupils have made excellent progress so far and we are absolutely sure that our pupils will do their very best in the assessments.
