Welcome to the first Wellbeing page for this academic year! We hope that you all had a lovely, relaxing summer break and that your batteries are fully recharged for the year ahead. The return to school is always exciting but, understandably, comes with certain levels of anxiety. Please do talk to us about any worries or concerns that you or your child may be experiencing. You can talk to your child’s Class Teacher or any member of staff. We will always listen and try and help in any way we can.
Please look after yourselves and each other in the year ahead and remember to keep spreading kindness!
This term, the children have enjoyed their PSHCE lessons and learnt about the topics, 'Being me in my own world' and 'Families and friendships'.
A good PSHCE education is so important to children as it teaches them to help live healthy, safe, productive, fulfilled, capable and responsible lives.
We use a PSHCE whole-school approach scheme of learning called 'JIGSAW'. This scheme incorporates a mindful approach to the curriculum which helps children understand and value who they are and how they fit in and contribute to the world. It keeps the children at the heart of its curriculum.
We have introduced weekly 'Mindful Me' mindfulness time within assemblies each Friday to encourage all pupils to learn and practice 'Calm Me' techniques and strategies to support children in identifying their thoughts and feelings and thus regulate their emotions and choose their behaviours.
Zones of Regulation
This term we launched a whole school initiative called 'Zones of Regulation', which focuses on children reflecting on their feelings on a daily basis and drawing upon tools to help them self-regulate and help themselves to improve their mood, feelings and behaviours. They use the colours green, blue, yellow and red to show how they are feeling.
How can you help yourself?
The children are encouraged to self-reflect on a daily basis and are now in a routine as they ' self check-in' by registering their names against the colour they are feeling. The children are so supportive of each other and a culture of inclusiveness and support is created to ensure each and every child starts their day with a smile, ready to learn.
'Chime Time'
The children have enjoyed having 'Chime Time' during PSHCE lessons. They get ready by sitting comfortably on the floor in a calm cross-legged position choosing a yoga pose or having their hands in a relaxed manner. They enjoy hearing the sound of the chime and are confident in using breathing techniques to help calm and relax their mind, body and soul. The children have impressed us all as they are able to sit still and allow this stillness during this time!
What have we been learning this term?
In Reception, they have been learning about the topic, 'Being me in my world' and the children have enjoyed exploring who they are, exploring moods, feelings and behaviours through a range of activities. They are beginning to understand the importance of being unique, responsible, using kind words and hands and even what rights they have as children.
In Year 1, they have been learning about the topic, 'Families and Friendship' and the children have enjoyed exploring different types of families, creating their own family trees, share who is special to them, exploring friendships and what makes a good friend. They have shared their own experiences and been able to explain the importance of the people who care for them in their lives.
JIGSAW Buddy
During all PSHCE lessons, the children have a JIGSAW class buddy who helps to teach and set the context for certain issues and topics. This is Jigsaw Jaz who helps the children to talk and share their views in a child-friendly manner. They love holding and being responsible for Jigsaw Jaz especially during carpet circle time talks!
