Hampton Court Palace 2023

Year 11 students recently visited Hampton Court Palace  working with primary sources to develop their understanding of Henry VIII, his life, and religious changes

What is being studied this half term?

Year 7

As an introduction to history, year 7 have focused on an important aspect of English history; the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Beginning with looking at Anglo Saxon England the pupils moved on to looking at the succession crisis and the resulting wars as the battle to be England's next king began. The pupils examined what caused William to be victorious.

Year 8

The pupils have been exploring the impact of the industrial revolution in Britain. They have focused on sources in order to examine the impact and have built up their source skill. Focus has been on a variety of aspects including the agricultural revolution, the impact of the development of factories and the impact this had on the lives of working children.

Year 9

This half term has seen pupils look at the Holocaust. Beginning with a look into the history of anti-Semitism and then focusing on the rise of the Nazi party and their beliefs. Pupils examined the impact the party had on the lives of Jews and the resistance Jewish people attempted to confront the Nazi's with. Pupils have focused on considering whether people were Perpetrators, bystanders, upstanders or victims. 

GCSE

Year 10 have began their journey by looking at medicine during the medieval and renaissance period with focus on what people believed caused illnesses and how they went about treating and preventing illness and disease. Considering how much had changed during these periods.

Year 11 have continued examining Henry VIII's England. They analyzed the impact of the break with Rome as England changed from a Catholic to Protestant country. They have also looked at how this helped Henry get his annulment and teh impact this had on Thomas Cromwell

Podcast recommendation: 

Adolf Hitler rise and downfall is a new podcast created by historians and gives expert insight into the dictator's life. Ideal for year 9 pupils wanting to develop their understanding of the Nazis following what they have learned this half term. Also for GCSE pupils as it will really help them understand this topic they will cover in Year 11.

Year 13 went on a visit to Crossness Engines to see the work of the legendary Joseph Bazellgette. Nicknamed the sewer king it was his creative thinking and ingenuity that led to the system that London still uses today. Students were taken on a guided tour and took in an interesting presentation on the history of the toilet. All of this was as part of their study into Public Health in the 19th Century and how the rapid growth of London from around two million to six million.
