EMPOWERED BY POETRY!
EMPOWERED BY POETRY!
This term, students have been taking steps outside of lessons to develop their poetry writing skills. The Empowered Poetry competition was an opportunity for them to craft their writing skills and have their work published by Young Writers. The enthusiasm students had for entering the competition was most gratifying, with a huge number of students taking time to give poetry writing a shot.
I am delighted to announce that 26 students have had their poems accepted, and will go on to be published in a poetry collection to be released later this year. Congratulations to them all! In addition to this, Navneet Dhaliwal (7M), Avishkar Bhattari (10H) and Amritleen Kaur (VI H) have been chosen by the English Department as the school winners. They will all be receiving a prize for their efforts.
OUR YOUNG REPORTERS
The pandemic has created a void in work experience for students but, by running an online work experience platform, the Young Reporter Scheme has managed to successfully fill that void and offers hundreds of students from London the chance to experience life in the media.
Selected students from Years 10-13 have the opportunity to write regular articles that are published, whilst building up a portfolio of written work and all from the comfort of their home!
Participants are required to write one article per month for a period of eight months. The articles are only circa 250 words (so it is easily achievable alongside school work) and every article written is published on one of Newsquest Media Group’s online newspapers. With a monthly worldwide audience of almost 30 million people, what better way for students to showcase their work and write about things that are important to them, build up their confidence and hone their writing skills! So far, our students have already submitted their first 3 articles.
During the scheme, there is also the option to attend lectures and a host of additional opportunities for students to attend in person or online and then write about the experience. These include theatre shows, musical performances and sports events!
If you are interested in taking a look at the amazing pieces that our ‘Young Reporters’ have created, then head to the ‘This is Local London’ website and search ‘Guru Nanak Sikh Academy’ into the search bar. You will then see a list with all of the articles that have been written by students from our school.

JACK PETCHEY SPEAK OUT CHALLENGE!
Amanat Kaur (Year 10) took part in Jack Petchey's Speak Out challenge. We asked her to comment on her experience of the workshop ...
"My name is Amanat and I was someone who was chosen to take part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out challenge. At the Jack Petchey workshop, we started the day by introducing ourselves and telling everybody in the room what we liked/ disliked and what we are good at. It was a great way to understand everyone and gave us a taster of what was to come during the rest of the workshop.
Later, we were given a range of random topics, in the form of either a word, phrase or a question, and we had to create a short speech about that word, phrase or question. It was completely improvised! We were taught key pointers and tips on how we can improve the way we present and deliver our speeches. We were also told to share some of the experiences and stories that have taken place within our lives: the opportunity to discuss some of the things that have happened to us was extremely interesting! We then gave each other feedback on how we could improve our storytelling skills.
It was amazing to get an insight into other people's lives and understand the way that they see the world. It was a great eye opener and overall an incredible experience. It has definitely improved my confidence with public speaking."
