"Nipple Color" originates from the artist's childhood awareness of the difference between their nipple pigmentation and their peers', a physiological feature that felt "abnormal" and continuously triggered questions and anxiety about self-identity during their growth. This intimate and traumatic bodily memory has been transformed into a systematic color study, constructing a unique artistic vocabulary.
In East Asian cultural contexts, nipples are subject to gendered double standards of display, cultural restrictions that not only shape the power dynamics between viewing and being viewed but also influence people's perception of bodily differences. Research reveals that even within East Asian populations, nipple colors present a rich spectrum from light pink to dark brown, challenging our established assumptions about the relationship between race and skin color.
The artist employs commercial color swatches as a cataloging method, converting each participant's physical characteristics into objective color data, creating an ambiguous archive that exists between the private and public spheres. This "commodification" of intensely private bodily features serves both as an ironic commentary on medical gaze and commercial objectification, while highlighting how bodily differences are standardized and normalized under commercial civilization.
Through systematic field research and image documentation, this work establishes a unique database of human body color domains. "Nipple Color" not only transforms personal trauma into socially significant artistic research but also challenges viewers' established frameworks of body perception, examining the complex relationship between physiological features and cultural constructs. Through a depersonalized yet humanistic visual archive, it provides a rigorous academic foundation for human body research while protecting participants' privacy.
