GHS Ceramics

Welcome to GHS Ceramics!

Clay is the way!

My name is Sara Truman and this is my 10th year teaching and my 7th year teaching Ceramics at Gainesville High School. I am from Paducah, Kentucky. I received my Bachelor's in Painting and Ceramics in 2007 from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I then did a one year post- baccalaureate in Ceramics at the University of Florida here in Gainesville before going on to my Master's in Ceramics at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. I returned to Gainesville in 2014 and started at GHS. We have several students in nationally recognized programs on full scholarships for ceramics, and we are now nationally recruited. Please let me know if going further in Ceramics is something you are interested in.

This year I will be on leave in the fall to stay home with my young daughter, and one of my first students will be my long term sub! I'm so excited for her to be here and you all are going to love her! Her name is Ms. Alyssa King and she is more than prepared to take on the daily challenges of managing my program.

As always I am available through email, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all!

I teach 4 periods of Ceramics 1 a day. This class is the introduction to ceramics and can be taken by any student at GHS at any time in their 4 years here. Please click under the header up top for the Ceramics 1 page to access class materials and information!

I teach just 1 period of Ceramics 2 and up. This class is the advanced level for ceramics. The projects are more challenging and in depth and require a bigger commitment to creative thinking and problem solving. Please click under the header up top for the Ceramics 2 page to access class materials and information!

This year we are offering A/P Ceramics for the second time! Students can take the course for college credit. This is the second year for the class and I'm so excited to see what my kiddos create this year! Last year we had 4/5 students receive a pass on their portfolios, and 4/5 received their class credit.

Show Opportunities for Students!

There are several opportunities throughout the year for students to show work! The Thomas Center in downtown Gainesville has two different shows for K-12 students, The Harn Museum of Art on UF's campus has a K-12 student show and the GHS Student Show in the spring. The biggest show for K-12 students is the K-12 Show at the NCECA Conference. This year's NCECA is in Richmond, VA.
