I can’t believe there are only two weeks left of this half term – time really does fly when you’re having fun, and as this week’s Rosebery News is testament to that - it’s been a fabulously busy and joyful week at Rosebery.
Football, cross country, hockey and chess all featured in fixtures and events, with the GLF Chess Tournament marking the start of the GLF Boundless Festival, today. Robotics Club fundraising, Art Exhibitions, Open Mornings, Six rehearsals, Peer Masterclasses, the launch of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh sign up, and Friday Live – you name it, we did it, this week!
We also launched the first week of Black History Month activities at Rosebery, which continue for the next fortnight, led by the History Department and a team of sixth form students. In tutor time, students have been exploring the importance of the Race Relations Act 1965 and in assemblies spotlighting significant figures of black and mixed race backgrounds, including a spotlight one of our own - Miss Gemma Devonish.
Next week there is a Black History Walk with orientation clues and prizes up for grabs, and we will be exploring the diverse and continually evolving ethnic makeup of the UK in tutor time, and celebrating the rich culture and diversity within our own Rosebery School community, which makes us who we are.
In a tense national (and international) climate, where unrest and division is on the rise, I believe it is incredibly important that schools provide and champion this kind of cultural education, that we help build bridges, rather than walls, and empower our girls to see past fake news and misinformation – which is sadly currently rife online and on social media.
Acknowledging and celebrating our own rich culture, heritage and diversity, which has benefitted hugely from immigration, can be profoundly affirming for our girls who may be feeling marginalised right now and for all our students we must foster and build a culture of empathy, understanding, and belonging – as is the Rosebery Way.
This is also a conversation that I hope you might like to continue at home, and given the complexity around exploring such issues I’d like to recommend two resources that you might find it helpful to refer to:
How to Talk to Children About the St George’s Flag | Free School Resource
Parents' Resources - Educate Against Hate
Next week is equally jam packed, with House Benchball, Year 8 Open Morning, a GCSE Art trip to the National Portrait Gallery, a Year 7 hockey tournament, Year 11 Futures Day and of course our Sixth Form Open Evening. And that’s all before RAG Week, in the final week of the half term - let the good times roll!
In the meantime, have a fabulous weekend everyone.
A quick reminder that, due to temporary 3-way traffic lights now in place outside the hospital on Dorking Road, Whitehorse Drive, and the through-hospital road, alongside existing lights on Woodcote Green Road, we anticipate significant congestion in the area—especially in the morning from 8am onwards.
To help avoid delays and ensure student safety, we strongly recommend that students walk home or walk part of the way, if possible. Please avoid driving to school or entering Whitehorse Drive for drop off and pick up.
These roadworks are expected to continue until Wednesday afternoon next week, so please plan your daughter’s journey accordingly.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Year 7 have had another busy week, full of exciting lessons and activities! In PDC this week, we have been focusing on the importance of extra-curricular clubs, and as teacher of PDC to 7PY, it was wonderful to hear about the huge range of activities they have been throwing themselves into - from Badminton, to Crafts, to the school production. It was also great to hear what they had gained from their clubs, with students mentioning how these activities had helped them make new friends, build their confidence, and try something that wasn’t available in primary school.
This week, Year 7 were treated to two Peer Masterclass sessions, led by our Y12 Champions. The sessions focused on a range of topics relevant to Year 7, such as revision, taking care of your physical and mental health, and navigating friendships. The Sixth Formers did an excellent job of passing on their advice in the role of ‘big sister’, and we hope that every student took something away from the event.
Looking ahead, PGL is next weekend and we can’t wait! Next week, we will be speaking to all students about the plans and expectations for the trip, which were shared with you at the virtual information evening. The slides from this event, plus the packing list, were emailed to you, so please refer to these when helping students with their packing this weekend.
On the topic of emails - did you know that there’s also a Student Bulletin, similar to Rosebery News? It’s emailed to all students every Friday and is a great way for them to keep up to date with what’s happening around the school. If your child hasn’t come across it yet, do encourage them to take a look - it’s full of useful updates, opportunities and celebrations from across the Rosebery community.

Year 8 have smashed this week with positivity, teamwork and a real commitment to doing their best everyday. On Monday, Year 8 discussed how they can successfully set themselves up for the day from making sure they have their equipment for each subject, packing their bag the night before and submitting their homework on ePraise so it is off their to-do list! On Tuesday, Year 8 had an assembly from Mrs Jones, about the importance of celebrating Black History Month to recognise and honour the remarkable individual's both past and present. To end the week successfully on Thursday, 8MX, 8MY and 8CY represented Rosebery remarkably being tour guides for future parents and students.
Collectively, Year 8 have achieved 12,921 points as a year group. I am so proud of them for relentlessly trying their best both inside and outside of lessons, they really are embedding progress not perfection in their Rosebery journey! Our leader board shows Sophie S 8EY in the lead with 91 points, following closely by Mahlia P 8EY and Anneliese L 8PX with 81 points so far – well done keep up the hard work! A special shoutout goes to Lia R 8MX who is the first one to complete the Challenge card for demonstrating positive behaviour in lessons – I owe you an accolade on ePraise!
Over the last couple of weeks thank you to all who have reached out to discuss how we, as a team can work together to support your daughters Rosebery journey. An effective way to monitor this is through your ePraise parent account which helps you celebrate your daughters points but also supports constructive conversations you can have at home if they are receiving demerits. I look forward to seeing some of you at our open morning on Monday 13 October – the tickets sold out faster than Oasis so watch this space for some more opportunities to be a fly on the wall!

It was a pleasure to welcome so many parents and carers this morning to experience what it feels like to be a Rosebery Year 9 student for the day. We greatly appreciated your positive feedback on the lessons you observed, which you shared on our Padlet wall — highlights from this will feature in next week’s Rosebery News. We hope you were able to spot some of the teaching and learning language from your crib sheet, helping to give more context to the approaches you see in action at home through your powerful 15-minute conversations with students.
A reminder that you can monitor how your daughter is engaging in lessons via ePraise, where points and de-merits are recorded. Login details were shared at the start of the academic year, but please get in touch if you would like these re-sent.
On Tuesday morning, to inspire students ahead of the launch of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Year 9 began reading Fantastic Female Adventurers by Lily Dyu. The book shares the real-life stories of fourteen remarkable women who have undertaken extraordinary challenges — from mountain climbing to jungle exploration. This week’s focus was on Gwen Moffatt, the first female British mountain guide, whose fearless determination and unconventional lifestyle broke barriers for women in mountaineering. Her story reminds us of the power of resilience, independence, and pursuing one’s passion without fear.
The official launch assembly for Bronze DofE will take place after the October half-term break. Students can, however, sign up now by paying a deposit on ParentPay. The deadline to sign up is 30 November 2025, and any queries can be directed to DofE@roseberyschool.co.uk

Another week passes, and I’m slowly running out of superlatives to describe how impressed I am by Year 10’s approach this term. Their consistency, focus, and determination in lessons continue to be exceptional, and this commitment will undoubtedly serve them well later in the year and into Year 11.
In form time, we have continued to focus on oracy and study skills, while also marking Black History Month through dedicated sessions. This week culminated in a powerful assembly led by Mrs Jones and supported by Year 12 volunteers, who spoke about influential Black figures throughout history who overcame adversity to create lasting change. Mrs Jones closed the assembly with a moving tribute to Gemma Devonish, reflecting on her remarkable impact on our school community and her dedication to shaping the lives of our students.
As Black History Month continues, we will carry on celebrating the contributions of these historic figures, while also taking time to explore more deeply Gemma’s background and family, and the inspiration they continue to provide.
This week I have been delighted to invite students for Thank You Friday once again, and a common theme is emerging with the invites; once again, I have been able to invite students based on their phenomenal starts this year, with students today either being mentioned to me by name by a staff member for their wonderful start, or have been seen in lessons by myself or Mr Hewett being an absolute star! Well done to Duda A, Emmy S 10CY, Lucy C, Annabelle B, Zainab H 10MX, Imogen E, Katelyn L and Rosa F 10EX and keep up the amazing work!
Finally, I wanted to extend a big congratulations to Mabel F-T 10CX. Mabel has once again successfully taken part in the Great River Race, a 21.6 mile river rowing marathon, which goes through the middle of the City of London on the Tidal Thames. Mabel was racing this year in the under 16s team, and what a fantastic achievement this is, especially in a tough race where some teams didn’t even finish the race! A very impressive time of 4 hours and 30 minutes was achieved and a great show of resilience!
Have a lovely weekend.

With over 11,000 points on ePraise, Year 11 are officially the Upper School Champions — a fantastic achievement that reflects their hard work, dedication, and commitment to success. During intervention sessions this week, it was wonderful to see students arriving promptly, prepared, and leaving with a smile. Targeted intervention will continue until the end of term, with whole-class sessions beginning in most subjects in the New Year.
Our study skills sessions this week focused on active recall, with particular attention to the blurting method - a technique that involves writing down everything you can remember about a topic before transferring key information neatly onto flashcards.
As part of Black History Month, we were moved by an inspiring assembly led by Mrs Jones and our History Prefects, celebrating Black individuals who have faced adversity and made lasting, positive change. The assembly also paid a heartfelt tribute to Gemma Devonish, whose dedication to education and kindness continues to embody this year’s theme of “Standing firm in pride and power.” Over the coming weeks, form time discussions will continue to explore Miss Devonish’s story and her family’s remarkable history.
Looking ahead, next Wednesday’s Student Futures Day will see students taking part in a range of off-timetable activities focused on their next steps. They will explore their future selves, learn more about Rosebery Sixth Form and post-16 options, and hear from Rosebery alumni who will return to share their journeys since leaving school. The day will conclude with students receiving their mock timetables, ahead of our Sixth Form Open Evening from 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone who attended the theatre trip to see Moulin Rouge on Thursday — it was a fantastic evening and a real cultural highlight. Another big thank you to the students who led the Year 7 Masterclasses on Friday; your energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to support our newest students made a real difference.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 15 October, an important event in the school calendar. We would greatly appreciate the support of Year 12 and 13 students to help make the evening a success. If you are available, please add your name to the shared spreadsheet — your contribution truly helps to showcase the best of Rosebery Sixth Form.
A reminder that you are never alone. If you ever feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or simply need to talk, please reach out to your Personal Tutor or Head of Year, who are always here to listen and support you.
In PDC sessions, Year 13 students have been exploring the VESPA model, a framework designed to support success at A Level. So far, they have focused on:
Vision – understanding what you are working towards
Effort – maintaining consistent commitment
Systems – staying organised and managing workload effectively
We encourage parents and carers to continue these conversations at home by asking:
What are your academic and personal goals?
Are you putting in the right amount of effort?
How well are you managing your time and deadlines?
What could you change to work more effectively?
Additional resources are available on Google Classroom to support these discussions and help students reflect on their progress.
The top ePraise points for this week are from Jessica K with 104 points in 12TEA and Marta N in 13OJM with 111 points. Well done!

This week marks Dyslexia Awareness Week #DAW25. The theme this year is ‘Dyslexia: Raising the volume.’ The British Dyslexia Association launched a report ‘Set up for somebody else’: Young people with dyslexia in the education system to shine a light on the experiences and challenges of our dyslexic children and young people in school. It sets out what young people think would help them, and our recommendations for Government. BDA-Report_Set-up-for-somebody-else-report_Oct-2025.pdf
They have also launched 'Hear us', the UK’s first-ever voice petition. We’re asking parents, teachers and young people to speak up for change.
The petition calls for two key changes:
Screen children for dyslexia within their first two years at school.
Equip teachers with the training and resources to support every child.
The reality for young people with dyslexia
Too many children feel misunderstood, overlooked, or singled out at school.
Seven in ten say dyslexia has made them feel bad about themselves.
Six in ten hide their dyslexia.
Six in ten report being teased or bullied because of it.
Almost one in five do not have access to assistive technology at school.
Nearly eight in ten believe people assume they are not clever because they have dyslexia.
Over one in three describe school support as only ‘fair’ or ‘poor’.
This isn’t just about education - it’s about confidence, self-esteem, and futures being held back. This campaign keeps the pressure on Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson as she prepares long-promised SEND reforms.
But how can those reforms be right if the voices of those living through the system haven’t been heard? Now is the time to speak up. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, or someone who believes every child deserves a fair shot at education.
The petition is open now for anyone to add their voice - Voice Petition Recorder
Do you know someone who would like to play a valuable role in the Rosebery community? We currently have vacancies on our School Standards Board (SSB). We are delighted to share that artwork by Rosebery students has been selected for display in the “What is Art?” exhibition at the Horton Arts Centre. The exhibition brings together creative work from primary and secondary schools across Epsom and Ewell, celebrating the imagination and skill of young artists in our community.
The theme, “What is Art?”, encourages open interpretation and highlights the diverse ways students express their ideas. The selected Rosebery pieces showcase the effort, creativity, and focus our students demonstrate during their art lessons - often resulting in bold and inspiring outcomes.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the PSA for generously funding the new exhibition frames. These will not only enhance the presentation of this year’s work but will also be used to display student artwork in future years.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday 7 October to Saturday 11 October, open daily from 9.15am to 4.30pm. We warmly invite families and friends to visit and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our young artists.

The Year 8 hockey team took part in a highly competitive tournament on Tuesday 7 October and represented the school with pride, determination, and a fantastic team spirit. From the first whistle to the final match, every student gave their all. The progress the team made with each game was clear to see – their confidence grew, passes became sharper, and their understanding of the game improved noticeably. It was a brilliant example of what hard work, communication and teamwork can achieve.
A special mention goes to Kaitlyn D 8CX, who stepped into the goalkeeper role with real courage and composure. She made some outstanding saves throughout the day, several of which drew praise from staff and opposition coaches alike. Her quick reflexes and calm decision-making under pressure made a huge difference in tight games.
Rita C 8MX was another standout performer, showing incredible energy and adaptability by covering multiple positions across the pitch. Whether defending or pushing forward in attack, she gave 100% and was always involved in the play, supporting her teammates and helping keep the team organised.
The whole squad should be extremely proud of their effort and attitude. The tournament was a great learning experience, and with such enthusiasm and commitment, there's no doubt the team will continue to go from strength to strength.
Players' Player was awarded to Rita C and Coaches' Player was awarded to Kaitlyn D.
Miss Dawson - PE Teacher
The Year 9 girls delivered a strong and determined performance at this week’s football tournament, demonstrating excellent teamwork, effort, and resilience across four tightly contested matches.
After a narrow defeat in the opening game, the team showed real character, drawing their remaining three matches through impressive defensive organisation and creative attacking play. Each game was hard-fought, with the players working tirelessly to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities.
It was a fantastic display of commitment and team spirit, with plenty of positives to build on for future fixtures. Well done to all the players for their effort and enthusiasm, and a special mention to injured Katie E 9PY, who came along to support the team and even took on the role of ‘manager’.
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
Every Tuesday during lunchtime in M1, Year 7 students are invited to come along and enjoy a range of fun craft activities, including jewellery making, friendship bracelets, and colouring.
A recent issue is affecting some popular children’s books by Andrew Cope, including the Spy Dogs, Spy Cats, and Spy Pups series.
Some editions of these books include a printed web address at the back. This link used to go to the author’s website, but the domain is no longer under his control. It has since been taken over by another party and now leads to inappropriate adult content.
The publisher, Puffin, has paused sales and distribution of the books and is working with schools, libraries, and retailers to remove copies from circulation. They have stressed that the website has no connection to the author or publisher.
What this means for you:
If your child has any Spy Dog, Spy Cat or Spy Pups books at home, please check the back for website links and make sure they do not try to visit the site.
It is safe for children to continue reading the stories themselves — the concern is only with the outdated link.
We recommend talking with your child about the importance of not following web addresses in books without checking with an adult first.
