With the school closed to students today, I’ll keep my introduction relatively brief this week – but also because I want to give top billing to our new Head Girls and Senior Prefect Team!
A huge thanks to Miss Canessa and Mrs Mariner for overseeing the process of designing these roles, making these appointments and for developing and championing Student Leadership at Rosebery.
We are thrilled to share that our Senior Prefect Team for 2026 has been confirmed after a thoughtful and reflective interview process. We were blown away by the amount of Year 12 students who put themselves forward for a role and all students represented themselves remarkably. To recognise the exceptional talent, we have introduced a new student leadership layer: Assistant Head Girls.

In addition, we are evolving the student leadership opportunities available across the school. The previous Junior Leadership Team roles in the Pillar School have been replaced with:
Junior Ambassadors (Years 7–10), supporting the work of Junior Prefects
Senior Ambassadors (Sixth Form), supporting the Senior Prefect Team
Students in Years 7–10 will soon have the opportunity to apply for Junior Ambassador roles, and Year 10 students will be able to apply for Junior Prefect positions after our launch assemblies next week.
Senior Prefect Team’s First Initiative
Now in post, the Senior Prefect Team’s first task is to lead our annual donation drive for the Epsom Pantry. The Pantry supports local families, including members of our school community, to cope with the cost of living and maintain normality during challenging times.
Food donations: Collected Monday 15 to Thursday 18 December at the front gate by the Senior Prefect Team, to support families who use the Pantry through the Christmas period
Monetary donations: Already open via ParentPay, helping the Pantry remain stocked through January and February
This initiative is a wonderful way for our students to lead by example and contribute to the wider community and the pantry would welcome any donations you are able to contribute, but have provided the following list as guidance:
Custard
Chocolate biscuit bars (e.g. penguins/club)
Spreads (e.g. chocolate/peanut butter/honey/marmalade)
Ketchup
Spaghetti hoops
Tea
Cooking sauces
Coffee
Long life juice
Squash
Sweetcorn
Cereal
Elsewhere, I must commend Year 13 students, whose turn it was to sit their A Level mock exams this week, which continue into next week – their dedication and application has been commendable.
I must thank the parents/carers who attended the first Parent & Headteacher Forum yesterday evening; we will share a summary of issues discussed in due course as well as plans for future forums each term.
And thank you in advance to Year 11 parents/carers for attending your daughter Parents’ Evening this coming Thursday.
As ever, please do check out the rest of Rosebery News which again celebrates a huge range of student successes, sporting achievements, spotlights preparations for Six! The Musical and highlights a wonderful Year 12 Art Trip to the Tate Modern.

Another week done, and we are definitely starting to feel the Christmas spirit in Year 7 as we look forward to our trip to see Cinderella at the Rose Theatre in Kingston next week!
Logistics Reminder:
Y-side forms will attend on Monday 1 December 2025
X-side forms will attend on Tuesday 2 December 2025
On the day of their trip, students will attend Periods 1 to 3 as usual, then meet in the canteen at the start of Period 4. Here, students should eat their packed or purchased lunch and register with group leaders, who will then escort them to the coaches.
The performance has an approximate run time of 2 hours, plus an interval. Students may bring a snack for the interval. We expect to return to Rosebery at approximately 5.00pm, but students will text you an update when we leave the theatre. As always, your support in ensuring prompt collection is greatly appreciated.
Students will remain in full school uniform throughout the trip, and we are confident they will be exemplary representatives of Rosebery. We are so looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic performance, bringing even more Christmas cheer to Year 7!

The frosty winter mornings make the term feel like it’s flying by - and with only three weeks to go, the office is officially decorated for Christmas and the bells are ringing! Despite the shorter week, Year 8 have impressed both me and Miss Godsave with their dedication, confidence, and willingness to give their best in everything they do.
Showcasing this commitment, our lesson behaviour loyalty cards have been a huge success, with a special shoutout to 8PX for earning multiple stamps in Geography on Tuesday. Congratulations also to Emilia D 8PY for making fantastic progress in Science with Mrs Cartron, and to Maisey P 8PY for being exceptionally organised by completing homework that isn’t due until January!
Our attendance currently stands at an amazing 97%, and we know that with the cold mornings approaching, your daughter may be tempted to stay in a warm, cosy bed. Thank you for your continued support in encouraging her to attend school every day—your commitment during these chilly starts truly makes a difference to her learning and resilience.
As we move through the term, please remind your daughter to wear her uniform with pride. This includes:
No fluffy or branded socks
Always having her blazer with her
Trainers may be worn on the way to school in wet weather, but students must change into school shoes before form time at 8.30am
For your reference, we have attached a picture of suitable school shoes.
🏆 WEEKLY WINS 🏆
8CX - Arlia P was being accepted into the National Youth Choir. Well done, Arlia!

We can hardly believe that December is almost here - the weeks are flying by! Year 9, however, are making the most of every moment and giving their best each day.
As the days grow colder and darker, please ensure your daughter wraps up warm for her journey to and from school while continuing to wear the correct uniform. This includes:
No fluffy, branded or coloured socks
Always bringing her blazer
Wearing correct school shoes or packing them to change into upon arrival
For your reference, we have included an image showing examples of permitted and non-permitted shoes (below).
With winter weather comes the temptation to spend more time indoors—and often more time on devices. Excessive or poorly timed screen use, especially at night, can negatively impact sleep, attention and mental wellbeing. During Mindful Monday in form time, Year 9 reflected on their own phone habits, how screens make them feel, and brainstormed non-screen activities they can enjoy in their free time. (See images below for ideas.)
On Tuesday, Year 9 read about Mira Rai in Fantastic Female Adventurers by Lily Dyu. Mira, a former child soldier from Nepal, became a world-class trail-running champion and now mentors young women through her Mira Rai Initiative. Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience, humility and the importance of creating opportunities for undiscovered talent to thrive.
Finally, we are thrilled to announce that 50 Year 9 students have been invited to a Christmas Movie Afternoon for achieving 100% attendance and zero de-merits since September—an outstanding accomplishment! We are so proud of these students for showing up every day and doing the right thing. Don’t forget to scan the QR code on your invite to vote for your favourite film!

I’ve been truly impressed with Year 10 this week. So many students have come to speak with me about their target grades, setting ambitious goals for what they want to achieve by the end of Year 11. Their attention to detail and understanding that high aspirations require a growth mindset - and consistent action - has been inspiring. It’s clear that the message of “action, not anxiety” has resonated well with the year group.
It feels particularly fitting that, as Year 11 complete their mock exams, Year 10 are stepping up and showing they are ready for the challenge ahead.
Two highlights this week showcase the incredible abilities within Year 10:
Surrey Cup: We had the second round of the Surrey Cup, which myself, Miss Croft and Mr Bruton attended with the team. More details on this will follow next week!
Year 10 GCSE Music Concert: On Thursday evening, Mr Holloway, Mrs McKay and our talented GCSE Music students hosted families for a wonderful evening of performances. This event gave students valuable experience in live performance as part of their GCSE studies.
I was blown away by the variety and quality of music on display - from pianists and singers to drummers, guitarists and flautists. The dedication and hard work these students have put into practising their craft was evident throughout the evening. It was a true privilege to witness their talent, and I look forward to seeing more from this exceptional group in the future.
Wishing you all a lovely (extended) weekend!
⭐ STARS OF THE WEEK ⭐

As November draws to a close, we remain incredibly proud of the vast majority of Year 11 students who have returned from the mock exam period with renewed energy and continued dedication to their lessons. This commitment is reflected in the Upper School ePraise points, where Year 11 are once again in the lead—by well over 1,000 points compared to Year 10!
Over the next two weeks, form time will focus on reflecting on mock results and setting aspirations for the future. Each student will receive a booklet to record SMART targets for their next mock period, as well as strategies to support their wellbeing.
We look forward to welcoming you to Parents’ Evening on Thursday 4 December 2025, where we will discuss your child’s progress and attainment. The evening will take place in person in the Main Hall and nearby classrooms. Members of the Year 11 team will also be available should you wish to discuss anything further.
Finally, thank you for your generous donations to our Casey Ward Christmas Toy Collection. The Amazon Wish List remains live if you are able to contribute further. We are particularly low on Lego sets for all ages, so any donations would be greatly appreciated.

As we move into December—a month that can be joyful and exciting—it’s also important to remember that this season can feel very different for some families. For those who may not have enough, or for those missing loved ones, Christmas can be a challenging time. We encourage everyone to look out for one another, offer support where possible, and show kindness in ways big and small.
As part of our commitment to supporting the local community, we are partnering with Epsom Pantry this festive season. The Pantry plays a vital role in helping families access good-quality food in a welcoming and dignified environment. You can find more information about their work, including how to donate or volunteer, on their official page:
https://www.yourlocalpantry.co.uk/pantry-listings/surrey-epsom-pantry/
This week, members of our SPT team visited Epsom Pantry to learn more about its impact. They are creating videos to share what they discovered, which will be shown to the whole school in the coming weeks.
We encourage our school community to join us in spreading kindness and generosity throughout December. Whether it’s helping a neighbour, offering a listening ear, or contributing to the Pantry, every act of compassion strengthens the sense of care we are proud of at Rosebery. More details about how everyone can get involved will follow shortly.
Please note that Year 12 students will have in-class assessments for all subjects from Monday 6 January to Monday 13 January 2026. Now is the time to ensure folders are organised, resources are accessible, and revision plans are in place. If unsure, students should speak to their subject teachers.
Year 13 are well into their mock exams this week and next. On the whole, these have gone smoothly, but please remind students to bring the following for any remaining exams:
Check seat number before the exam starts
Arrive at least 10 minutes early
A clear water bottle
A clear pencil case
Required equipment (black pen, pencil, calculator, etc.)
No Tippex or correcting fluid
School ID card
These mocks are a valuable practice run, helping students and staff identify gaps in knowledge and prepare for the summer exams. Normal lessons resume on Thursday 4 December 2025, and we look forward to welcoming students back.
In PDC, Year 13 will explore body awareness, encouraging students to recognise their own beauty and share compliments with others. We will also introduce the CoppaFeel campaign, raising awareness of breast cancer signs and what to do if concerned. If you have any questions about the nature of this session, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thirteen Year 12 Art students braved the November weather for an inspiring visit to the Tate Modern, followed by an immersive workshop with award-winning artist Jeanette Barnes. The trip offered a rare opportunity to experience world-class artworks and the dynamic urban environment that shapes much contemporary art.
The day began with students photographing the city and the urban spaces they travelled through on their way to the gallery. Inside Tate Modern, they gathered around Pointing Man by Alberto Giacometti. Despite battling drizzle outside, the group was fully engaged as they explored the sculpture’s striking form and discussed its historical and artistic context. The gallery visit encouraged students to think critically about scale, space, and the human figure - concepts that will inform their practical work.
The momentum continued this week with a full-day workshop led by Jeanette Barnes, whose celebrated drawings capture the energy of bustling cityscapes across the globe. Barnes guided students through a series of fast-paced drawing tasks, demonstrating her processes and sharing insights into how she conveys movement and vitality in urban settings.
Working primarily with charcoal - Barnes’s signature medium - the students quickly discovered its versatility, experimenting with bold marks, layered textures, and expressive gestures. By the end of the workshop, many had gained a newfound appreciation for charcoal’s potential and produced work that reflected their growing confidence.
This visit and workshop offered an invaluable experience, encouraging students to think deeply, observe closely, and experiment fearlessly. It was, by all accounts, a brilliant introduction to art in our capital city, leaving the group inspired and creatively energised.

1. Besides ruling the stage in SIX, what’s your all-time favourite musical?
My favourite musical has to be Operation Mincemeat. It's got such good songs and the historical backstory is great. I love how it's a true story.
Beth V 8CY
2. Which song from SIX makes you want to grab a mic and belt it out in the shower?
Probably 'Ex-Wives'!
Nina S 8CY
3. If you could be any of the SIX queens, who would you be and why?
I’d be Jane Seymour! She was known for her kindness and calm nature, and sometimes being the peacemaker is just as powerful as being bold. Plus, her song in SIX is so heartfelt.
Rose
4. Who’s your ultimate inspiration in the world of performing arts?
My ultimate inspiration? Idina Menzel! She’s incredible — from her powerful performance as Elphaba in Wicked to bringing Elsa to life in Frozen. Every time I hear her sing Defying Gravity or Let It Go, I get chills. The power, emotion, and sheer magic in that moment remind me why performing arts can truly make you feel unstoppable
Mrs MacLeod - Central Admin & Communication Lead
5. You’re invited to a Tudor banquet — what dish are you bringing and why?
I’d bring a big pot of honey-glazed roast parsnips! Why? Because honey is my favorite (obviously 🐻), and parsnips were a popular Tudor vegetable. Plus, it adds a sweet twist to a royal feast fit for queens.
Barry
6. If you were Queen for a day, what’s the first royal decree you’d make?
If I was Queen for a day, my first decree would be that all Dairy Milk chocolates are completely free across the country.
Emily K 9PX
We stepped backstage and asked the one of the team who keeps the show running smoothly a question of their own: If your life were a behind-the-scenes documentary, what would it be titled — and what moment would be the dramatic highlight?
If my life was a behind-the-scenes documentary it would be called Running, because I rarely stop, and seem to have become even better at it since starting at Rosebery! Sometimes running to SIX rehearsals with hundreds of lyrics sheets, and then running to D5 to teach plenty of Christmas music and help our Year 10s get ready for their concert! The next day I'm running to D2 to make sure our Year 7s have created some spooky ghost stories and then on to G12 for a choir rehearsal, stopping only briefly in the Music and Drama office, where I get told off for running. The dramatic highlight would be when the Prince of Tonga surprised me during my flute performance in a summer concert, by leaving the audience and coming on stage to give me money (this is a Tongan tradition). Sadly, since it was being broadcast live to the Tongan nation I had to muffle the giggles and keep playing and could not, on this one occasion, run away!
Ms McKay - Music and Drama Teacher
In Tudor theatre, there were no formal stage managers or tech crews like we have today—but someone still had to keep things running smoothly! The "book-holder" was an early version of a stage manager. They were responsible for prompting actors, tracking props, and even cueing entrances. Lighting was natural (thanks to daylight), and sound effects were created live—think drums for thunder or sheets of metal for lightning!
So while today’s tech teams use headsets and lighting rigs, Tudor productions relied on quick thinking, teamwork, and a whole lot of improvisation - just like a modern crew, minus the tech!
Stage managers are the ultimate organisers of a production. They keep everything running smoothly—from rehearsals to live performances—making sure cast, crew, and cues are all in sync. With a headset on and a script in hand, they’re the calm in the chaos. If you’re great at multitasking, love being part of a team, and enjoy keeping things on track, stage management could be your backstage superpower.
Stage technicians are the behind-the-scenes heroes who make the magic happen. They handle lighting, sound, set changes, and special effects—often in the dark and always on time! Their work helps create the atmosphere and drama that brings a show to life. If you’re hands-on, love tech, and enjoy solving problems under pressure, this could be the perfect role for you.
We’re inviting local businesses, organisations, and families to sponsor our upcoming school production of SIX: Teen Edition by purchasing space in the official show programme.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support the arts at Rosebery while showcasing your business or sending a message of encouragement to the cast and crew!
Sponsorship Options:
Half-page advert – £30
Full-page advert – £60
All sponsors will be featured in the printed programme distributed during performance week.
If you're interested or would like more details, please email cbrew@roseberyschool.co.uk
Thank you for helping us make this production truly unforgettable!
Due to the number of SIX cast members taking part in the Christmas Concert, the rehearsal originally planned for Thursday 11 December 2025 has been cancelled. This session will now take place on Tuesday 16 December 2025. In addition, the Haus of Holbein rehearsal — now for all choruses — will move to Wednesday 17 December 2025.
There will also be an extra rehearsal for the Aragon and Boleyn choruses on Thursday 4 December 2025.
Please see the updated rehearsal schedule below.
On Wednesday 12 November 2025, the Year 7 football team delivered an outstanding performance, earning a well-deserved 2–0 victory over Ashcombe. From kick-off, the girls showed real determination — challenging every tackle, applying strong pressure, and working together brilliantly across the pitch. Their excellent teamwork created numerous shots on target and kept Ashcombe on the back foot throughout.
Despite dominating much of the match, the breakthrough came late on, with two superb goals scored in quick succession. These decisive strikes sealed the win and highlighted the squad’s energy, focus and commitment. A fantastic result for the team — well done!
The Players' Player was awarded to Isilijia B-S 7MY, and the Coaches' Player was awarded to Emilia D 7MY.

On Tuesday 11 November 2025, the Year 9 and 10 netball teams travelled to Therfield for their NSSSA league matches. Despite the cold and dark conditions, both teams approached the games with confidence and determination.
The Year 9 team started strongly, moving the ball into the shooting circle with sharp, accurate passes that Therfield struggled to intercept. By the end of the first quarter, Rosebery led 5–1. After a few changes — thanks to the team’s wealth of talented shooters — the girls continued their attacking dominance, converting chances with ease. Defensively, they intercepted well and transitioned quickly into attack whenever challenged. At half-time, the score had stretched to 10–2, and the team maintained their momentum to finish with a convincing 16–6 victory. Congratulations to Polly H 9EX for receiving Player of the Match!
Over on the Year 10 court, it was a similar story. The team stormed to a 16–0 lead by half-time, allowing for some exciting positional changes in the second half. Therfield managed to sneak in a goal during the third quarter, but Rosebery continued to score freely, taking the tally to 20–1. More changes followed in the final quarter, including Erica F 10CX switching into the shooting circle alongside Eve — both finishing the game with a flurry of goals. The final score was an emphatic 26–1. A special well done to Erica and India R 10CY for earning Player of the Match.
Fantastic performances from both teams — well done, girls!
Mrs Hart-McKee - PE Teacher
Both the Year 9 A and B teams delivered fantastic performances in their fixtures against Ashcombe this week. The A team played with determination and teamwork throughout a highly competitive match. Despite strong defensive work, accurate shooting and excellent passages of play, they narrowly lost 18–21. The girls showed real resilience and fought until the final whistle, demonstrating clear improvement in movement and communication on court.
The B team secured a well-deserved 14–12 victory after a tightly contested game. They worked cohesively across the court, combining solid defending with confident attacking play. Consistent pressure and smart decision-making helped them maintain their lead and finish strongly.
Both teams represented Rosebery brilliantly, showing excellent sportsmanship and commitment. Well done to all players involved!
Miss Gale - PE Teacher
On Wednesday 12 November 2025, the Rosebery girls travelled to Glyn for a much-anticipated netball rematch — despite having convincingly beaten the boys during RAG Week! The game took place on a smaller court due to a hanging light, but that didn’t stop our team from starting with full intensity and determination.
The match was fast-paced and slightly erratic, as the boys lacked netball experience, but it was highly entertaining. While Glyn managed a few attempts at goal, none found the target, much to their frustration. Meanwhile, our girls were on fire in the shooting circle, scoring confidently despite being defended by much taller players. They kept their composure and didn’t let the boys get under their skin.
It was a fun and spirited contest, and Rosebery stormed to a dominant 20–2 victory. Well done to all the girls for another fantastic performance!
