At the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, Rosebery fell silent to mark the beginning of The Armistice – the agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations - which began at 11am on 11 November 1918.
This remains an incredibly important tradition, not just to commemorate the signing of The Armistice, but to remember and pay our respects to all those service men and women who have fought and given their lives in service to their country since 1914.
I am grateful to Mr Sheffield for leading assemblies throughout the week which explored the theme of ‘Service not Self’ and to Miss Ringer and Mr Holloway for organising and broadcasting our own Service of Remembrance, across the school, as well as to Mr Murphy for accompanying a small group of Year 9 students to represent the school at the Remembrance Service held in Epsom Market Place, hosted by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell.
Elsewhere this week there have been a myriad of sporting successes, which you can read about later in Rosebery News, Year 11 have started their Mock Exams with great aplomb, and we’ve ended the week raising money for Children in Need, with our Year 7 Movie Night taking place yesterday and the Year 8 equivalent this evening. Preparations for SIX! The Musical are also in full swing; please do make sure you book your tickets for what promises to be a phenomenal show at Leatherhead Theatre in January via ParentPay, and check out and follow the new Rosebery Performing Arts account on Instagram for future show and performance updates.
Earlier this week you will have received, via email, a link to complete the GLF Parent Voice Survey – it would be great if as many of you as possible complete this, which is linked here and later in Rosebery News for your convenience.
Finally, it seems too soon, but the run up to Christmas has officially started with the launch of several key Christmas events – so do make sure you secure your Christmas tree via the PSA, book your tickets for the Christmas Carol Concert from Monday, and book your daughter a Christmas Dinner on ParentPay! More details on each of these follow later in Rosebery News.
Traffic on Whitehorse Drive
We have been working hard with Surrey Roads and Transport to make Whitehorse Drive as safe as possible for our students and all community members, and would politely request that all parents and carers respect the no stopping and dropping zones clearly marked and signposted outside the school gates.
As ever, we would strongly encourage you to allow your daughter to consider using public transport to get to school, to walk, or to cycle. If you must drive her to school, please avoid driving down Whitehorse Drive, and allow her to walk the final 5 to 10 minutes, from a little further away.
We must also be considerate of the residents of the road, and parking across their driveways, mounting the kerb, or stopping and turning in the road with undue care and attention are all unacceptable.
Whilst I hope you can help us keep vehicle traffic entering the road to an absolute minimum, there is also a proposal to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on Whitehorse Drive and Rosebank, which we are in full support of. Feedback to the council on this proposal can be made via https://whitehorsedriveandrosebank.commonplace.is/
Headteacher Parent Forum – Technology in Schools
A reminder that if you would like to be considered for a place on the Parent Forum to meet with Mr Lach to discuss the future of technology in Schools, please register you interest using this form.
This is due to take place on Thursday 27 November at 6pm. The agenda will include a review the KS3 Blackout Pilot, gauge parent and carer views on whether they wish their daughters to have a mobile phone with them in school, and consider whether now is the time to consider introducing a one to one device scheme at Rosebery (such as every student having a Chromebook or iPad) as we prepare our girls to navigate education and future employment in the digital age.
If successful, termly Parental Forums will be introduced to ensure Parent Voice is heard by school leaders on a range of ‘hot topics’.

Last week, we set Year 7 a challenge: raise as much money as possible for Children in Need… GO!
We’ll admit, we were a little concerned that every form might opt for a cake sale (not great for variety - or our sweet tooth!), or that planning might descend into chaos. But once again, our students have amazed us with their creativity and teamwork.
From karaoke parties to ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ competitions and even a chocolate raffle, Year 7 have shown real ingenuity in support of a fantastic cause.
Also this week, we hosted a Children in Need Movie Night, which was a lovely, relaxed event. It was a pleasure to welcome students into our Sixth Form Centre and treat them to a film -we hope they all enjoyed it!
As you’ll see from students’ Weekly Wins, this challenge has been a brilliant opportunity for them to show courage in taking the lead and kindness through collaboration. It’s clear they’ve had a lot of fun along the way.
We look forward to sharing the fundraising totals with you soon!
🏆 WEEKLY WINS 🏆
7CX: for working as a form to organise, bake and run an amazing bake sale and raffle.
7EX: for working as a team to bake, sell and make posters and decorations for our charity event, making sure that everyone had a role to play, taking turns behind our stall to make sure that everyone felt included. I have also heard some positive feedback from a number of teachers about how lovely the form are. Hedy L represented Rosebery at the regional Judo competition, and Robyn P and Clarissa W took part in a netball tournament.
7EY: as a form, they all came together to bake and sell for the Children in Need charity. Elsewhere, Darcy W scored a goal in her Sunday football game, the whole form has been on time this week, Imogen C completed her flyaway off-bars for gymnastics and, in a whole form football match in PE, Emilie V scored the winning goal.
7MY: some wonderful fundraising activities have been taking place. Shout outs go to Isla L, Lily B and Robyn S, who all done some baking and have sent in photos of their amazing creations!
7PX: we've come together brilliantly to raise money for charity, setting aside our differences and uniting around a shared purpose: helping others. The 7PX team hosted an incredible karaoke party that brought everyone together and the energy, laughter, and generosity made it a party to remember.
7PY: the form showed amazing team work to produce a bake sale everyday this week! All the girls got involved in various ways and there was such positive energy! Well done 7PY!

This week, our Children in Need fundraising efforts have been a huge success, and we are incredibly proud of Year 8 for their creativity, teamwork and leadership throughout the planning and delivery of their events.
While we wondered whether every form might opt for the traditional bake sale, our students surprised us with their originality and enthusiasm. Highlights included:
8PY hosting a hot chocolate and gingerbread decorating sale for the whole school
8CY running a lunchtime sweet sale
8EX brightening the day with a Crazy Hair event
8CX taking on the challenge of keeping hold of a random object for the entire day (see photo attached!)
These fantastic efforts were celebrated at our Children in Need Movie Night, where students enjoyed watching K-Pop Demon Hunters. As expected, the girls sang along to every song, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere that perfectly captured the spirit of Year 8.
A special mention goes to our talented Year 8 singers this week: Elena B-G 8CX, Niamh DK 8CY, Chloe O 8CX, Carys P 8MY, and Arlia P 8CX, who performed Abide with Me so beautifully during our Remembrance Service on Tuesday 4 November 2025. A further congratulations to Arlia, who also shared a powerful and thought-provoking poem she wrote independently on the slave trade, which she read with great confidence to Mr Chamberlain.
Looking ahead to next week, we’re focusing on increasing participation in our wide range of extra-curricular activities. From Netball Club to Minecraft Club, there truly is something for everyone at Rosebery. We encourage all students to step out of their comfort zones, try something new, and perhaps even discover a lifelong passion. Thank you for continuing to support and encourage your daughters to get involved - these activities offer a valuable break from academic work, help build confidence and friendships, and most importantly, are lots of fun!
🏆 WEEKLY WINS 🏆
8CX: Arlia P wrote a thoughtful and informative poem on the Slave Trade in History. She bravely read this to Mr Chamberlain at the end of her History lesson.
8CY: the form worked together as a team to organise and complete incredible activities to fundraise for Children in Need - everyone baked and they tasted delicious!
8EX: Mollie S and Amelie D fought tirelessly at the football match against Three Rivers Academy, which resulted in a to 10-1 win!
8EY: the form celebrated their amazing achievement of being at the top of the leaderboard for points out of the whole school!
8MX: the form celebrated improving their attendance throughout this week! Well done guys - keep it up!
8MY: Carys P, Amelia S and Maya S bravely represented Rosebery in our Remembrance Service, and India S raised an incredible £1000 for her Scouts troop at the weekend!
8PX: during Music with Mrs McKay, Setareh S demonstrated excellent leadership skills by helping her peers play the piano!
8PY: there was excellent organisation for Children in Need, decorating gingerbread men and selling hot chocolate in the hall for the whole school!

As we mark Remembrance Day, Year 9 have been reflecting on this year’s theme: ‘Service, not Self’. This powerful message encourages us to consider how we can put others first—through kindness, empathy, and a willingness to help without expecting anything in return.
We take inspiration from those in the armed services, past and present, who have placed the safety of others before their own. Students have explored how they can live out ‘Service, not Self’ in everyday life - by showing goodwill, including others, speaking out against unkindness, championing causes they care about, and contributing to their communities. Small acts of service, whether big or small, can make a meaningful difference.
Thank you to Amber C 9PY, Ciara C 9CY, Sophia P 9EY, Lily S 9CY, Molly S 9CY, Molly U 9PY and Jude Y 9CY who sang beautifully with others in our choir ‘Abide with Me’ as part of Rosebery’s live-streamed Remembrance service, and thank you to Neve K 9CY for your eloquent and thoughtful reading of Poems for Peace by the Children of Yemen.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Morgan W 9MY, who competed in the Regional Tang Soo Do Championships in Wales last weekend. She achieved:
1st place in Fighting
3rd place in Forms
3rd place in Weapons
We are incredibly proud of her achievements - keep up the fantastic work!

This week marked an important milestone in Year 10’s GCSE journey, as we began the target setting process. On Thursday 6 November 2025, Ms Bailey and I spoke to students about what this process involves and the importance of thoughtful reflection when considering their next steps.
We want Year 10 to remain ambitious, and students are being given the opportunity to set their own aspirational targets - above and beyond those generated from FFT data. While students may choose to aim higher, we will not permit any changes that lower their target grades.
Students received their personalised target grades on Friday 7 November 2025, and we recognise that this may bring a mix of emotions - delight, determination, or even a sense of overwhelm. As I emphasised in assembly, now is the time for action, not anxiety. This message will continue to guide us throughout the year, and we hope to see Year 10’s actions reflect their aspirations.
We have a wide range of support available, both pastorally and within departments. Students are encouraged to:
Speak to subject teachers for tailored academic guidance
Attend our Year 10 Weekly Study Club
Make the most of our study skills programme during form time
Year 10 will be given every opportunity to reach their goals, and in turn, we ask that they continue to work hard and trust the process.
We encourage you to have conversations with your daughter about her targets and the importance of setting clear, aspirational goals. This is not about creating pressure, but about giving her something meaningful to work towards - something she can be proud of on Results Day in Summer 2027.
Finally, we’d like to celebrate Amina K 10PX for her upcoming role in Snow White on Ice. She is a wonderfully talented skater and incredibly dedicated to her craft. We’re sure the performance will be phenomenal. For anyone interested in attending, please see the attached flyer.
Wishing you a lovely weekend!

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns colder, we enter what we call Pastoral November. This time of year can leave students feeling tired, jaded, and in need of extra support. We encourage students to speak to their tutors if they are struggling, and parents are warmly invited to get in touch with us if they have any concerns.
We have lots of lovely things planned in the lead-up to Christmas, including the Lille trip and plenty of festive fun to look forward to.
As our Year 12 and Year 13 students approach their upcoming exams, we recognise that this can be a particularly stressful time. Managing exam pressure is a vital skill, and your support at home can make a real difference to your child’s wellbeing and performance.
Here are five ways you can help:
Encourage balance – Support your child in maintaining a healthy routine that includes breaks, physical activity, and plenty of sleep. Rest is just as important as revision.
Create a calm study environment – A quiet, organised space can help your child focus and feel more in control.
Offer reassurance – Remind your child that you are proud of their effort, regardless of the outcome. Their worth is not defined by exam results.
Listen and talk – Encourage open conversations about how they’re feeling. Sometimes, just being heard can make a big difference.
Provide practical support – Help them plan a realistic revision timetable, ensure they’re eating well, and encourage time for hobbies and relaxation.
Our pastoral and academic teams are always available to offer additional support. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing or exam preparation.
Year 12: Public exams for Criminology are approaching. These count towards final grades, so it’s important that students are well-prepared and following guidance from their teachers.
Year 13 Level 3 students: This week, students completed mock exams in Health and Social Care, Human Biology, and Criminology. We hope these went well.
Year 13 mocks: Begin the week commencing Monday 24 November 2025. There is a real buzz in the Sixth Form work area, with whiteboards filled with revision notes across a range of subjects. Please remind your daughter of the importance of practising exam questions under timed conditions and revising thoroughly.
Year 13: This week’s PDC sessions focused on drugs and alcohol, exploring internal and external pressures, consequences, and global legal differences. As many students begin planning holidays after A Levels, we hope they feel empowered and informed to make sensible decisions.
Year 12: We continue to explore physical and emotional wellbeing, with a particular focus on sleep hygiene. Students are encouraged to reflect on their sleep habits and consider improvements. All resources are available on Google Classroom, and we welcome discussions at home around this topic.
Please remind your daughter that Personal Academic Tutor meetings are essential to attend. Some students have missed their allocated times, which places additional pressure on staff to rearrange. If there is a genuine reason for absence, students should email their tutor in advance to reschedule.
We would like to congratulate the Senior Netball team Maisie D 13LHM, Amy B 13MRC, Jacqueline T 13AIW, Alice F 13AJB, Jess L 13AIW, Keira K 13KZH, Sophie V 13KHL, Amy H, Carrie L 12TEA, Freya B, Rosie G 12SGF, Sophie L, Eilidh M 12TEA, Tillie F 12RXL, Abi W 12KEJ, Zara Q 12ELR and Leila who WON 27-8 against Sutton last week and played St Theresa’s this week in the U18 District tournament. We are awaiting the results!

The Rosebery MoBros have posed for their first Movember progress photo of the month, capturing an impressive range of early-stage moustaches—from the heroic to the hardly-there! Spirits are high, competition is growing, and so are the mos (slowly… for some).
Looking ahead, moustaches will be on sale for students in the final week of November, with all proceeds supporting the Movember Foundation. A perfect chance for students to join the fun and show their support.
Meanwhile, in the Lower School, excitement is building as students prepare to vote on what colour the MoBros will dye their moustaches for the big end-of-month reveal. Bold choices are expected… and possibly regretted.
More Mo updates coming soon!

Last week, twenty of our fantastic A Level Chemistry students travelled to King's College London for a tour of their chemistry department and to attend the prestigious Daniell Lecture - this year on the topic of high-energy batteries and the prospects for battery-powered flight.
The Year 12s carried out experiments with cross-linking polymers to make alginate worms in the KCL labs and then listened to two wonderful speakers: PhD student Hannah Turney, and YouTube star and chemistry lecturer Professor Darren Walsh. An inspiring evening all round!

1. Besides ruling the stage in SIX, what’s your all-time favourite musical?
My favourite musical is Newsies (below left). The male dancers are incredible! - Rosie G 12SGF
2. Which song from SIX makes you want to grab a mic and belt it out in the shower?
Rose: “Oh, easy! I’d grab that mic and belt out Don’t Lose Ur Head! It’s got sass, drama, and the perfect excuse to flick my imaginary crown in the shower.”
Barry: “Pfft, amateur move, Rose. The real shower anthem is 'Get Down. Nothing like pretending you’re the queen of the dance floor while shampooing your fur!”
3. If you could be any of the SIX queens, who would you be and why?
I would be Anne Boleyn, as she is such a funny character and I love her song!
Annabel B 10MX
4. Who’s your ultimate inspiration in the world of performing arts?
My ultimate inspiration is Simone Biles (above centre). Although she is a gymnast not a performer I find her gymnastics like a performance in itself and I love her work. If we are going with fully a performer than I would probably say Ariana Grande (above right).
Hazel K 7PX
5. You’re invited to a Tudor banquet — what dish are you bringing and why?
Wagamamas' Bang Bang Cauliflower - its the best!
Rosie G 12SGF
6. If you were Queen for a day, what’s the first royal decree you’d make?
I would ensure that for one day a week pupils get to decide their own timetable.
Amelie F 7EY
We pirouetted into the spotlight and asked the dance teacher a question of their own: If your life were a dance performance, what would it be called - and what style would open the show?
If my life were a dance performance, it would be called ‘Organised Chaos: A Ballet With Unexpected Twists (and Jazz Hands)’. The show would open with a graceful ballet solo - elegant, poised, and totally calm... until real life kicks in with a surprise disco break and a costume change mid–pirouette. Expect a mix of pliés and panicked improvisation, a few dramatic fouettés into the unknown. Standing ovation optional - snacks at intermission, mandatory!
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
In Tudor times, dancing wasn’t just entertainment - it was a way to show off your status, manners, and even flirt a little! Court dances like the Pavane and Galliard were popular among the nobility. The Pavane was slow and stately, perfect for showing off elegant costumes, while the Galliard was lively and full of jumps - Queen Elizabeth I was said to be a fan and danced it daily to stay fit! So while the queens in Six are belting out pop anthems, their real-life counterparts were mastering the art of courtly dance to impress and express themselves.
Dancers are the heartbeat of any musical, bringing energy, emotion, and storytelling to life through movement. Whether performing a high-energy ensemble number or a graceful solo, dancers train hard to perfect their technique and stage presence. If you love expressing yourself through movement and thrive on rhythm and performance, a career in dance could be your calling!
Choreographers are the visionaries behind the dance routines you see on stage. They design the movement, teach it to the cast, and work closely with directors and musical teams to ensure every step fits the story. It’s a role that blends creativity, leadership, and a deep understanding of music and movement. If you enjoy creating and leading, choreography might be your perfect stage role - offstage!
The Year 10 Netball team put in a strong effort in their recent match against Cobham Free School (CFS), showing great teamwork and determination throughout. Despite their hard work, the girls were defeated 20–9 in a competitive game.
The team started brightly, moving the ball well through the court and creating some excellent scoring opportunities. However, CFS proved to be strong in both attack and defence, gradually pulling ahead as the match went on.
Bea T 10MY was voted Attacking Player of the Match for her excellent movement in the circle. Millie D 10MY was named Defending Player of the Match after a brilliant performance, making several key interceptions and applying consistent pressure on the opposition.
Although the final score didn’t go their way, the team showed fantastic effort and sportsmanship. Well done to everyone who played!
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
Our Year 7 Football team took part in an exciting tournament, playing a total of six matches. Each game lasted just five minutes, which made for some fast-paced and action-packed play.
Throughout the tournament, everyone showed fantastic teamwork and adaptability, with players rotating through different positions in every match. Despite the quick turnaround between games, the team communicated well, supported one another, and kept high energy from start to finish.
We celebrated a well-earned win in one of our games, with Scarlett S 7MY providing a great assist for Darcy W 7EY, who finished confidently to score our goal. It was a brilliant example of the teamwork and determination shown by the whole squad.
Even in the tougher matches, the team never gave up and continued to encourage one another, showing great sportsmanship and improvement with every game. Overall, it was a fun and rewarding tournament that showed just how well our players can work together under pressure.

On Thursday 6 November 2025, the Year 8 Netball team delivered a fantastic performance, claiming a confident 21–8 victory over Therfield. From the first whistle, the team displayed outstanding energy and determination, quickly taking control of the game with sharp passing and strong defensive pressure. The shooting circle worked brilliantly, converting opportunities with accuracy and composure, while the mid-court maintained a high tempo and excellent control of possession. Defensively, the team remained disciplined and forced multiple turnovers, making it difficult for Therfield to find their rhythm. It was a true team effort, with every player contributing through excellent communication, teamwork and spirit on court.
