As we hurtle towards the Easter Holidays (how are they already in sight?!), it’s been a lovely week at Rosebery with a particular focus on Empathy Week - a global schools’ programme designed to help young people develop empathy through real-life stories, films, and engaging classroom activities.
Established in 2020, its mission is to build the “Empathy Generation” by giving students opportunities to understand and appreciate different perspectives. For more information, click HERE.
The idea of considering our place in the world, celebrating different cultures, and building empathy seems incredibly apt and important in 2026 given the current state of world affairs and global politics.
Our Sixth Form students were invited to Snap Inc HQ to explore empathy and human interactions in the social media space, including the importance of developing products and services such as Snapchat in a more empathetic and positive way. They were also welcomed by A&O Shearman, a leading global law firm, to explore Empathy, AI and Skills for the Future - focusing on how essential human skills such as empathy, communication, curiosity and critical thinking underpin success in careers of the future, including those influenced by artificial intelligence.
Back at Rosebery, The Hive Team and pastoral leaders have been working with Year 8 students to explore friendship and kindness through a series of workshops to help them move ‘Beyond the Cliques’ and avoid ‘Mean Girl’ behaviour – all under the umbrella of empathy.
Year 10 students participated in a Global Dance Workshop, attended a workshop and seminar with the Engineering Firm Laing O’Rouke, facilitated by Rosebery Alumnae, and the Robotics Club hosted local primary schools to inspire the next generation of budding programmers and code builders. All were fabulously well received.
Earlier in the week, we hosted the GLF Netball Tournament – I’m hugely grateful to Mrs Garner and Team PE for their efforts in hosting a wonderful day of sport, competing with a range of GLF schools. I am also very pleased to report that Rosebery emerged victorious in both the KS3 and KS4 competitions. These events form part of the GLF Boundless Festival and support the work of the GLF Foundation, which you can read more about via the link HERE.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Today concludes Rosebery’s inaugural Empathy Week, with students considering how life looks from others’ perspective. To this end, their Girls on Board sessions have focused on how perceived slights in friendships may not always be as they appear. In addition, we have been continuing with our novel, Wonder, about a boy with a facial difference – a lovely story about being accepted for who you are.
We also had the opportunity to speak to students as part of our regular Student Voice programme. This is something we do each half term, with different groups of students, to ask about their experiences so far at Rosebery, and how we can improve even further. It was a joy to hear students’ contributions, and I was blown away by how wide ranging their interests are, from books, to problem solving, to music, drama, art and even quantum physics! We are now looking for ways to help incorporate students’ feedback into the classroom moving forward.

This week has been centred around our Beyond the Cliques workshops. During form time, students have explored key themes such as the history of cliques, the science behind kindness and a range of scenarios that encouraged them to consider how they would respond as a collective. I was particularly impressed by 8PX, who showed real maturity by looking at the scenarios from different perspectives – their favourite phrase quickly became, “What if the shoe was on the other foot?” I was also delighted by 8MY with Mrs Catron, who learned that kindness really does release “happy hormones” known as endorphins – although convincing the scientist herself took some time!
On Thursday and Friday, we were incredibly fortunate to welcome Becki, a mental health nurse and educational practitioner, to deliver our full Beyond the Cliques workshops. These sessions explored the “mean girl phenomenon” and how we can move away from cliques towards inclusive, caring and supportive friendship groups.
After today, I am absolutely beaming with pride. The enthusiasm, engagement and focus Year 8 demonstrated throughout their workshops was exceptional. I truly believe the girls now understand the importance of choosing kindness, being active bystanders and managing conflict in a mature and appropriate way. I am also grateful to you as parents and carers for reinforcing these messages at home, always encouraging your daughters to do what is right rather than what is easy.
#ProgressNotPerfection
This week includes a special limited edition whole year group Weekly Win to celebrate their excellent participation and commitment during the workshops. Every student has received their e‑Praise award worth 15 points each 😊

In form time this week, Year 9 have been taking time to remind themselves of the GCSE options process. This has involved reflecting on their strengths and enjoyment of options subjects this year so far, as well as their aspirations for the future. From Monday 16 March, Year 9 will be meeting with the pastoral team or Senior Leadership Team to discuss their GCSE options. A reminder that before their pathway meetings, students should:
Reflect on which option subjects they have enjoyed most this year and why
(remember that teachers and peers in these subjects may change next year).
Think about future plans — both educational and vocational.
Are there subjects that might support their goals or give them a head start?
Consider practical elements of each subject:
What will your three sports be in PE?
How much time are you willing to dedicate to practising dishes in FPN?
How much time will your Art portfolio require?
Complete the online survey (posted on the Year 9 Google Classroom), to reflect on their experiences of this year’s option subjects, as well as their thoughts on which GCSEs they wish to take into Years 10 and 11.
During form time, Year 9 DofE students have been reflecting on the strengths and qualities they will bring to their expedition team, exploring the different roles within a DofE group, and considering how to create a well‑balanced team. A reminder that each team must consist of exactly seven students. All team members should visit the Year 9 Office from Monday 16 March to let Miss Godwin know who is in their group.
Any student who is finding it difficult to form a team is encouraged to speak to their tutor, Mr Hewett, or Miss Godwin for support.

With only two weeks left in the term, there is still a lot to fit in. This week, I have been incredibly pleased to celebrate our students who have sought out opportunities for Junior Leadership in Year 10. For Thank You Friday today, I was delighted to invite this group (all listed as stars of the week) to speak with them about their achievements so far and some of the exciting leadership training they have taken part in. I have had nothing but positive feedback about this team, and I look forward to seeing how they continue to grow into future leaders.
Next week, Year 10 will have their wellbeing day on Friday. The schedule is looking full, with a range of wonderful wellbeing activities planned. Please ensure that your daughter arrives wearing her own clothes that are suitable for some more active sessions.
As mentioned last week, we also have our “Evening in the Life of a Year 10” event the following week on Tuesday 25 March. I look forward to seeing many of you there. If you still wish to sign up for what is always a very informative event for parents, please click HERE.

Another successful week for many students, as they have completed further assessments in Food and Music and begun receiving feedback in a range of GCSE subjects.
Looking ahead to next week, we have a special results assembly on Wednesday 18 March, where students will receive their mock and predicted grades for each subject. Following this, the Spring report will be shared with you, and we then invite you to Parents’ Evening on Thursday 19 March to discuss your child’s progress.
Every moment matters, and this is why we continue to maintain the highest expectations for punctuality, uniform and effort in lessons. Attendance at after school revision sessions has decreased this week, which I hope is because students are following their revision timetables at home. If this is not the case, please remind your child that revision sessions continue each week in the majority of subjects.
A final reminder that deadlines for ordering Year 11 leavers’ items are approaching:
Leavers’ Hoodies must be ordered by Tuesday 17 March 2026
Yearbooks must be ordered by Monday 22 June 2026

This week, you received your assessment timetable for Monday 20 April to Tuesday 28 April. With six weeks to go, this is the ideal time to begin preparing in a structured and manageable way. To support you, please follow the Six Week Revision Programme below.
Week 1: Organise your notes and identify the topics you most need to focus on.
Week 2: Rebuild core knowledge by revisiting key concepts and creating clear summary notes.
Week 3: Practise applying your knowledge through short tasks and topic questions.
Week 4: Strengthen exam technique by completing timed questions and reviewing common errors.
Week 5: Complete full practice papers under timed conditions and analyse where marks were lost.
Week 6: Consolidate your learning with lighter revision, focusing on confidence and wellbeing.
Well done to all of you who have taken part in trips and visits over the last week. You are incredibly fortunate to have so many enriching opportunities beyond the classroom. Please remember to thank the staff who make these experiences possible; your appreciation means a great deal.
A huge congratulations to the Year 12 Geography students who visited Swanage last weekend. Your effort, attitude and behaviour were exceptional. Members of the public were so impressed that they emailed the school to praise you — feedback that speaks volumes about your maturity and character.
Here is their message:
“My partner and I were in Studland on Saturday 7 March. We noticed pupils from your school behaving impeccably. Great credit must be given to your pupils and their teachers. It was lovely to watch and hear the children be respectful to each other and their teachers. What a great advert for your school. We wish them all the best for the bright futures they have ahead.”
I am a very proud Head of Year. Your hard work, your kindness, and the way you represent the school - both inside and outside the classroom - make a real difference. Keep going, keep growing, and keep showing everyone what Year 12 is capable of.
Year 13 are working hard on their mock exams, and it has been lovely to see the study areas being used so well. Overall, the exams are going smoothly, but I would appreciate your support in ensuring that your daughters have their lanyard with their card and all the equipment they need. There have been a few last minute dashes for calculators, for example.
It would also help if you could continue to report absences to Mrs Cooley on the day, so that all students can be accounted for and exams can begin promptly.
Next week, the final day of mocks is Tuesday, and we look forward to welcoming Year 13 back to normal lessons from Wednesday 18 March.
Well done to the following students for the effort and achievements that have earned them the highest points scores so far this year; Grace B 12TEA and Marta N 13OJM

We are delighted to share that The Rose, Rosebery’s student‑run newspaper, is now live and regularly publishing new articles written by our talented students. The newspaper features a wonderful range of content, from school events and opinion pieces to creative writing, reviews, and more.
We warmly invite all parents and carers to have a read and see what our students have been creating. You can read articles from The Rose by clicking the link below.
As the newspaper continues to grow, we are also looking for more enthusiastic student writers to join the team. If your daughter enjoys writing, English, journalism, storytelling, or simply wants to try something new, this is a fantastic opportunity for her to get involved. Students can register their interest by completing this short form.
On Monday, Mrs Bailey and I were fortunate to accompany nine of our Year 12 students to Snapchat Inc.’s London headquarters for a special Empathy Week event: Tech Runs on Human Skills - A Careers Insight Day. We were delighted to secure places on this unique programme, which explored how empathy influences app development, digital safety, and the wider future of technology.
The day began with Council, an experience that encouraged students to sit together in a circle, share stories, and practise deep listening. Council circles, or “talking circles”, are designed to build trust, empathy, and connection by giving each participant space to speak from the heart. It was wonderful to see our students relax into the process, showing openness and confidence as they built new connections with one another.
Before lunch, students had the opportunity to network with students from other schools and meet a variety of Snapchat staff working across the company, from engineering and design to policy, marketing, and safety. The conversations were rich and inspiring, with several discussions about future opportunities including work experience and internships.
The highlight of the day came after lunch: the Business Challenge. Students were placed into mixed‑school teams and tasked with pitching a creative idea for embedding “sharing culture” into the Snapchat app. Our Rosebery girls shone throughout, confidently leading discussions, guiding their groups, and presenting their ideas with clarity and enthusiasm to a room full of unfamiliar faces.
All groups received excellent feedback, but we were thrilled that two of our students were part of the winning team. Their concept proposed creating a new feature on Snap Maps - interactive “bubbles” that allow users to share and view stories about cultures from around the world. Their thoughtful, globally‑minded idea earned them a prize of Snap Spectacles, and a huge round of applause.
Mrs Bailey and I could not be prouder of how every student represented Rosebery. They led with confidence, creativity, and empathy, the very skills shaping the future of technology.
Miss Canessa - Director of Student Experience & Transition
A huge thank you to everyone who was able to join us. It felt as though every corner of the school community was represented — KS3, KS4, KS5 and, of course, a brilliant group of parents from that very special Key Stage known as 'Real Life'.
I arrived with a head full of dreams for our school grounds, but I did try to limit myself to a sensible list of tasks. Even so, I’m absolutely thrilled with how much we achieved together. The chicken area is now a genuine, tangible space. There is still work to be done before it can fully withstand the local fox population, but we are well on our way.
The back‑breaking soil moving is almost complete, and I’m hopeful that we will be able to start planting in time for this year. My next job is to consult with Food Preparation and Nutrition to decide which herbs we can grow for them in one of the Geography beds.
The garden shed is now close to being fully watertight and has been carefully felted in preparation for the next session.
Finally, the wildlife area beneath our glorious oak trees was cleared far more than any of us expected - achieved through sheer hard work and a determined team armed with secateurs!
We are excited to be running a second volunteer session before the Easter break. Our aims for the next session include:
Continuing bramble clearance in the wildlife area and along the perimeter by the pedestrian route (“the cabbage patch”), ready for planting our donated hedgerow from The Woodland Trust.
Building a polytunnel — this will require a good number of adults, much like the chicken area. The polytunnel I purchased from this company is still standing 20 years later, so I’m confident the materials will be excellent… although the instructions could practically be their own book!
Our second session will take place on Saturday 21 March from 9.00am to 2.00pm. We hope to see many of you there.
Mr Phillips - Head of Sixth Form
Year 8 students and their parents/carers are invited to attend the Curriculum Refinement Evening on Thursday 26 March 2026. Students should attend with their families but do not need to wear school uniform. Please note that on‑site parking will be limited.
The evening will explain the Year 9 curriculum refinement process, which supports students in shaping their future GCSE choices. This successful two‑year model provides both breadth and depth in the curriculum.
Evening Schedule:
X Band:
• 4.30pm to 5.15pm – Presentation in the Main Hall
• 5.15pm to 6.00pm – Meet teachers from option subjects
Y Band:
• 5.30pm to 6.15pm – Presentation in the Main Hall
• 6.15pm to 7.00pm – Meet teachers from option subjects
Students will receive a link via email to complete their options form online, as the school continues to move towards paperless processes.
Refreshments will be available to purchase from the PSA throughout the evening. If you require support accessing the site or the information shared, please contact headteacherpa@roseberyschool.co.uk.
We would like to make families and stakeholders aware of an important update from Surrey County Council regarding Free School Meal (FSM) Holiday Vouchers.
The Government’s Household Support Fund, which has been used nationally to fund these vouchers during school holidays, will end on 31 March 2026. As a result, Surrey County Council has confirmed that the Easter 2026 vouchers will be the final set issued. There will be no FSM Holiday Vouchers available for May half term 2026, Summer 2026, or any future holiday periods.
Surrey has continued to offer this support for longer than many other local authorities, and has expressed its ongoing commitment to helping families access financial, practical and wellbeing support where needed. A full letter from Surrey County Council has been shared with parents to outline the changes and signpost families to available help.
We understand that this update may be worrying for some families. While the school cannot replace the voucher scheme, we are here to support you. If you would like to discuss how we can help your daughter in school, please contact her Deputy Head of Year, who will be happy to advise and direct you to appropriate support.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for working with us to ensure all students feel supported.
Parents have the greatest influence on young people’s career decisions, yet many lack the knowledge and confidence in discussing their children’s future.
As career pathways continue to diversify and new careers emerge, parents must be equipped with the latest information and trends to help their children make informed career decisions.
To help empower parents and increase their confidence in supporting their children’s future, InvestIN is hosting an immersive webinar, ‘A Parent’s Guide to Life After School’, on Tuesday 17 March at 6.00pm, led by a panel of experts who will explore:
Growing graduate unemployment rate
Options after school for students
AI and career trends shaping the graduate job market
Parents' role in helping their children make informed career decisions
Importance of work experience and real-world exposure
If you’re unable to join live, you can still register to receive the webinar recording the following day.
