It’s been wonderful to mark the run up to International Women’s Day this week at Rosebery, and to reflect the 2026 ‘Give to Gain’ here at Rosebery. Staff wore purple accessories today, the colour of International Women’s Day, symbolising justice, dignity and empowerment, and yesterday were resplendent in yellow, to support Endometriosis Awareness Week. Throughout the week, the Senior Prefect Team have been helping promote these themes and have also been raising money for local charities, themed to inspirational women, as well as collecting donations for Epsom Pantry.
The official IWD website is linked below:
IWD: International Women's Day 2026 theme is 'Give To Gain'
Yesterday, the students also did a wonderful job of marking World Book Day with some amazing craft creations to represent their favourite book. The creativity on display was wonderful, including baked goods, sculptures, board games, 3D scenes and much more.
As ever, I must extend a huge thank you to those of you who attended Year 9 Parents’ Evening on Thursday, which was a very positive evening as the students gear up to make their final GCSE choices and start the ‘proper’ GCSE work.
Elsewhere this week, Year 11 students benefited from a special Macbeth ‘Revision on Tour’ event on Tuesday evening, Year 12 attended their first UCAS conference, the SIX cast reunited on Wednesday for a well-deserved Cast Party, the Wellbeing Café was a hit this lunchtime and as ever, you can read about a range of sporting events and success stories later in Rosebery News.
However, I did promise Ms Hart Mckee that I’d give ‘front page’ billing to the Rosebery Squash Team. You can read more about their day and achievements in the Sports Section, as well as see some additional photos, but it’s a really special achievement for a state school, such as Rosebery, just to be competing at the National Schools Finals in Edgbaston for the third year in a row – but to come second, and a very close second, in the country is a fabulous achievement. Congratulations to Aoife, Caitlin, Arlia, Cali and Hazel! #RosberyProud
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

It has felt like a delightful week for Year 7, helped in no small part by the sun finally making an appearance. The SIX cast party was a wonderful reminder of just how many Year 7 students were involved in the production, and we now have House Cheer in full swing as well. Forms have been practising their routines during form time and PE lessons, and it has been lovely to hear about the range of talents they are bringing to their performances — not only tumbles and dance moves, but also their own bespoke remixes!
It was also a pleasure to walk around the World Book Day Craft Fair and admire the incredible range of skills on display, from cake decorating to crochet. Conversations with students about their favourite books and recommendations were a real highlight. At Rosebery, we believe strongly in celebrating everything our students can do, and with International Women’s Day this Sunday, this feels even more important.
We have noticed that Year 7 demerits for lack of equipment have begun to creep up, so we have ordered a box of whiteboard pens which students can collect at break and lunch, if needed. Thank you for supporting our equipment expectations at home by checking ePraise and having quick conversations to troubleshoot. This could be as simple as packing a bag together the night before or adding a few stationery items to the shopping list.
Finally, we have seen an increase in students bringing ‘squishies’ or ‘NeeDoh’ fidget toys into school. These toys, often filled with gel, flour or liquid, can be very tempting to play with, but they have been bursting and causing damage to classrooms and equipment. Please could we ask for your support in ensuring these items are not brought into school.
🏆 WEEKLY WINS 🏆
7CX: Emma K won first place in a gym competition; Courtney-Lyn M-F nailed 2 new tumbles, Diya S won first place in her dance competition; and Belles T nailed a new tumble!
7EY: Mia H went to a hockey tournament and came fourth overall, Emilie V started her new gym club at the weekend, while Keira T won her netball match. Catrina N got two pink tokens for helping others and making sure litter was in the bin. Iona D, Amelie F, Ellie S, Amelia C, Livvy M and Celine P all got amazing grades from their LAMDA.
7MX: Well done to everyone for working so well together for House Cheer, and for listening to other people’s concerns and opinions. Well done also for deciding on a song!
7MY: The form worked hard for their Drama test this week and have also decided on their House Cheer song! Rose P and Emilia D played in a netball match and the team won 22-1. Elsewhere, Esme H has been practicing for a National Frisbee tournament, Kitty AJ is taking part in a runway experience, Sophia S and Scarlett S attended their first wellbeing training as part of their new JLT roles this week.
7PX: Lola H has been very mature and diligent in keeping up with her new responsibilities, and she has learned a round‑off back handspring stunt, and Eleni H has been very resilient coping with the loss of her pet.

Celebrating International Women’s Day, World Book Day and preparing for House Cheer all in the same week has certainly kept Year 8 busy! IWD was a huge success, and our ‘Give to Gain’ campaign made it wonderful to see Year 8 students donating to our charities while celebrating one another. The World Book Day craft fair in the main hall was also a lovely event, in which Molly E 8MX and Norah B 8MX created fantastic reconstructions of poems and cakes inspired by their favourite novels. House Cheer preparations are now well underway, with students remixing music, working together in PE to create their routines and - I hear - there is even talk of form tutors getting involved!
As you can tell from our weekly wins, it was also an exceptional week for sporting success! Our netball champions Ellie M 8PY, Dolsie S 8PY, Molly E 8MX and Lia R 8MX delivered a dominant performance against Epsom and Ewell, winning 22–1. Meanwhile, Olivia C 8MY, Sophia C 8PY and Chloe V 8PX stepped up to support the Year 9 football team, helping contribute to an outstanding 8–1 victory. It was also a superb weekend for Aoife VD 8PY, who was crowned overall winner at the Michael Hennings Junior-Graded Series at Epsom College, followed by another victory at the England Squash Bronze 6I – Bucks Bronze 2026 in the Girls’ U15 tournament! We clearly have incredibly talented students in our year group, and please do remember to share your daughters’ achievements so we can celebrate them together.
Next week, Year 8 will take part in a ‘Beyond the Cliques’ workshop. This will explore friendships, how we treat one another and what an inclusive friendship circle looks like. We are incredibly fortunate to have Mindworks from Surrey delivering this session, bringing a wealth of experience in supporting young people with these important topics. Please continue to have conversations with your daughters about how they treat others and the importance of their moral compass — always choosing what is right, not what is easy.
🏆 WEEKLY WINS 🏆

8CY: Beth V - for bravely stepping in as a goalkeeper for Epsom Colts at the weekend, and Niamh D-K for coming second in her singing competition.

It was fantastic to see so many Year 9 students and Parents/Carers at Parents’ Evening this week. Teachers shared lots of positive feedback, as well as one or two clear next steps for students to focus on both in lessons and at home to continue making progress in each subject.
This week, Year 9 also received an assembly from Mr Sheffield about the GCSE Options process. Year 9 are currently studying several core subjects (including both Geography and History), along with three option subjects. The GCSE Options process now asks students to refine their choices for Year 10 and 11. The process is as follows:
Think of your current three option subjects and add Geography and History to that list.
Decide which three subjects from this list you wish to continue into Year 10.
One of these must be either Geography or History.
Students may choose both Geography and History if they wish.
From the week commencing Monday 16 March, Year 9 students will have a Pathway Meeting with a member of the Pastoral Team or Senior Leadership Team to discuss and confirm their choices.
Before these Pathway Meetings, students should:
Reflect on which option subjects they have enjoyed most this year and why
(remember that teachers and peers in these subjects may change next year).
Think about future plans — both educational and vocational.
Are there subjects that might support their goals or give them a head start?
Consider practical elements of each subject:
What will your three sports be in PE?
How much time are you willing to dedicate to practising dishes in Food Preparation?
How much time will your Art portfolio require?
Complete the online survey, also posted on Year 9 Google Classroom, to reflect on their experiences of this year’s option subjects and their thoughts on which GCSEs they wish to take into Years 10 and 11.
Students will begin completing this survey in form time next week. To support this, students may temporarily disable the Blackout App for tutor time only on Monday 9 March. Students without a phone will be provided with a Chromebook.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Pippa W 9EY, who won Bronze medals for Floor, Bars and Vault at last week’s Gymnastics World Qualifier. She is hoping to compete in Orlando this summer. Well done, Pippa - we are incredibly proud of you, and we wish you the very best in your upcoming competitions.

What a difference a bit of sunshine can make to the week! It has been a pleasure, as always, to see Year 10 in their lessons, working hard and really stepping up their efforts as they move through the academic year. Alongside this, it has been wonderful to commemorate International Women’s Day, with our activities linked to this year’s theme, Give to Gain. It is always lovely to see how our students come together to support important causes, and I have been particularly pleased to see the burst of yellow accessories on Thursday and purple accessories on Friday as we raised money for our chosen charities: Endometriosis UK and the Epsom Pantry.
Year 10 also have plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks, including our Wellbeing Day and our Evening in the Life of a Year 10 Student event. The latter is always very popular with parents, providing valuable insight into teaching and learning at Rosebery and offering practical guidance on how to support their daughter further. As this event is usually in high demand, please click HERE to register your interest:
Finally, I have been really pleased with how responsive Year 10 have been to our uniform expectations following the half‑term break. Thank you to those who have supported their daughters in resolving any issues so that learning time is not missed, and to the vast majority who continue to present themselves with pride every day. Please do continue to ensure your daughters come to school ready to learn so they can make the most of these crucial moments.
⭐ STARS OF THE WEEK ⭐
10CX: Jade V - for the incredible amount of points achieved - well done!

It has been a varied and eventful week for Year 11 as we concluded the majority of the mock examinations, enjoyed a welcome burst of sunshine, celebrated the incredible SIX: TEEN EDITION production, and attended Wimbledon Theatre to see a performance of Macbeth - all while continuing to uphold the highest expectations in and out of lessons. To round off the week, students also took part in an inspiring assembly for International Women’s Day, commemorating the fight for equality, liberation and the wider women’s rights movement. International Women’s Day shines a spotlight on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights and the prevention of violence against women, and this year’s theme, #GiveToGain, encourages women and girls to educate others by speaking out, leading by example and giving back to their communities.
In many ways, this theme resonates strongly with Year 11. With only a matter of weeks left — including the Easter break, which will provide a small buffer — the reality that exams begin in May is beginning to settle in. While a few students may still be adjusting to this, the vast majority continue to work relentlessly in lessons and beyond. They are truly “giving now to gain later.” In support of this, revision sessions for most subjects will resume next week, with some students also being invited to morning, lunchtime and after‑school interventions.
Thank you for your ongoing support at home as you navigate the balance between revision, rest and wellbeing. We look forward to welcoming you to our second Parents’ Evening on Thursday 19 March, with bookings opening soon.

Congratulations to Tila F 11CY, who competed at the English Championships in Telford – the top Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition in England - last week.
Tila competed as a first‑year senior this weekend, performing alongside Olympians and World medallists - an incredible achievement in itself. She had a fantastic competition, achieving personal best scores on three out of the four apparatus, as well as an all‑around PB.
Tila placed 45th overall out of 112 of the country’s top gymnasts, even finishing ahead of gymnasts in both the GB and England squads. We are so proud of her outstanding performance, especially as one of the youngest competitors at this level.
Well done, Tila - what a remarkable achievement!

Surrey University Careers Fair
Year 12 attended the Surrey University Careers Fair on Tuesday, and their attitude and behaviour throughout the event were exemplary. It was fantastic to see so many students engaging with the seminar sessions and speaking confidently with university and apprenticeship representatives. They returned with prospectuses and information from a wide range of providers, which we hope will prompt useful discussions at home about their next steps.
Below are QR codes linking to a series of free Russell Group university webinars taking place in April. These cover a variety of subjects and offer an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of potential pathways.
We will continue these conversations during Future Week, which takes place in the first week of June. In the meantime, students should continue using Unifrog to research universities, courses and apprenticeships.
From next week, there will be six weeks (including the Easter holidays) until the Year 12 formal assessments. Personal tutors will be checking in on students’ revision timetables and preparation. A focused six‑week plan enables students to revise thoroughly and build strong exam habits.
Effective preparation balances three key areas:
Knowledge revision — consolidating class content and filling gaps
Exam technique — practising past papers, using mark schemes and completing timed questions
Organisation and wellbeing — maintaining routines, sleep and stress management
Starting exam‑style practice early is essential; simply rereading notes is not enough to secure strong outcomes.
Work experience will take place during the week beginning Monday 13 July 2026 and must be organised by students using Unifrog. Please ensure this is arranged promptly, as Year 10 will also be securing placements and local opportunities can fill up quickly.
If students need support, they should speak to Mrs Keaveney and continue to check the Friday newsletter sent by Mrs Cooley, where new opportunities are regularly promoted.
Students who have already completed work experience this year should ensure it is logged on Unifrog as part of their record of achievement.

Year 13
Year 13 begin their second round of mock examinations on Monday 9 March and will return to normal lessons on Wednesday 18 March. During this period, please encourage your daughters to make good use of the facilities available in school for their revision.
A few key reminders for students:
They must use the sign‑in app to sign in and out so we know who is on site in case of a fire.
They must arrive at school at least 15 minutes before their exam begins.
They should know their seat number and exam venue.
They must bring their lanyard and school ID card to verify their identity.
They should have a clear water bottle and any specialist equipment required for their exams.
They must write with a black pen.
I will be present at the start of as many exams as possible, and I will also be available in school throughout the period for additional support. If you feel your daughter would benefit from any extra help during this time, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Good luck, Year 13! We are so nearly there now.

Next week, Rosebery will have the pleasure of hosting the GLF Boundless Netball Tournament, welcoming students and staff from across the GLF Trust for a vibrant afternoon of sport, teamwork and community spirit.
We are incredibly proud to share that Rosebery were last year’s Key Stage 4 champions, and our players will once again represent the school with dedication, resilience and pride.
About the GLF Boundless Festival
The tournament forms part of the wider GLF Boundless Festival, a trust‑wide celebration designed to encourage students to push boundaries, explore new interests and take part in enriching activities across sports, creativity and challenge. These events aim to strengthen collaboration across GLF schools while providing students with memorable opportunities to grow, connect and shine.
At Rosebery, our approach to punctuality supports the core aims of our Character Curriculum, helping students develop responsibility, self‑regulation and “the way we do things round here”. Ensuring students arrive promptly to lessons protects learning time and helps create a calm, settled start for everyone.
How lateness is monitored
Only lesson lateness counts toward a detention.
Form time lateness does not contribute.
We track lateness from Friday to Thursday each week.
If a student is late to two or more lessons within that period, the system automatically issues a Friday lunchtime detention. This keeps expectations consistent and ensures each student begins the following week with a fresh start.
Communication with families
An automated email is sent to parents and carers after school every Thursday if a detention has been triggered. Because detentions take place during the school day, no additional arrangements are needed for your daughter.
Support for students
If your daughter has questions about the lateness recorded, or if she believes something needs reviewing, she is encouraged to speak directly with her Head of Year. This supports our Character Curriculum aims by developing communication, ownership and problem‑solving.
Connecting to the Character Curriculum
Our punctuality routines reflect the Caught–Taught–Sought model used across Rosebery:
Caught: daily routines, expectations and culture
Taught: clear guidance and modelling of good habits
Sought: students taking responsibility and seeking support where needed
This approach helps us nurture the qualities we prize in The Rosebery Girl: integrity, responsibility, confidence and ambition.
If you have any questions about the process, please contact your daughter’s Head of Year or the school office.
Dear parents, please can I remind you that the tangle toy is the only fidget toy that is allowed in school, as they are evidence-based, effective fidget toys. For your reference, we have attached an image of what this looks like:
Please do not allow your daughter to bring these gel shapes (below) into school as they are not permitted and will be confiscated. These are not effective fidget toys and are causing mess when they burst, which is frequently happening.
If you daughter requires a tangle toy based on her identified needs and she doesn't have one, please ask her to go to the HIVE or Connect where she will be given one.
Many thanks for your support in ensuring the best and most effective support is in place for all students at Rosebery.
Ms Byrne - Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion
Are you able to offer a one‑week work experience placement to one of our Year 10 or Year 12 students, giving them the chance to put their classroom learning into practice and develop key employability skills within a specific industry sector?
Providing work experience not only supports young people but also enables employers to tap into a wide range of emerging talent. Many organisations find that students bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and unique skills. Work experience also offers valuable development opportunities for existing staff, who may supervise or mentor a young person and enhance their own management skills in the process.
Creating these opportunities is an excellent way for companies to demonstrate their Corporate Social Responsibility by giving back to the community and helping to prepare the next generation for the world of work.
Our students will be on placement from Monday 13 July to Friday 17 July 2026.
Please note that employers must hold Employers’ Liability Insurance.
If you are interested in offering a placement or would like further information, please contact Mrs Keaveney at: fkeaveney@roseberyschool.co.uk

Year 11 Drama students recently completed their Component 2 'Text in Performance' practical examinations. Each student presented two extracts from the same play, performed either as monologues, duologues or as part of a group. All extracts were assessed by an external examiner who visited Rosebery for the day.
Both Mrs Mariner and I would like to congratulate all of these students for their dedication to rehearsals, which resulted in a series of brilliant performances. Well done to everyone - you should be very proud of yourselves.
Congratulations to Emma E 10PX, who portrayed the role of Nancy in Glyn School's recent production of Oliver. Emma had been attending rehearsals at Glyn for a number of months to develop the role and was the only female cast member involved in the production. Well done Emma for your courage in taking on this role, your dedication to the production and for your stunning performance.

On Tuesday evening, the English Department took 100 Year 11 students to Wimbledon Theatre to see Macbeth: A Revision On Tour. This unique adaptation brought Shakespeare’s tragedy to life on stage, offering a performance that was both educational and entertaining.
The production provided an excellent revision aid for Year 11 as they prepare for their upcoming GCSE exams, helping to reinforce key themes, characters and moments from the play in a memorable and engaging way.

Last week, 50 of our Year 10 Sociology students visited the University of Portsmouth for an exciting and informative trip designed to broaden their understanding of the subject and explore future pathways.
During the visit, students took part in engaging taster sessions in both Sociology and Criminology. In the Sociology session, they explored the sociology of friendship and how technology has influenced the way friendships are formed and maintained. The Criminology session introduced students to the consequences of crime, how punishments are decided, and included a Q&A segment.
In the afternoon, students attended a careers talk where university staff discussed the wide range of career opportunities linked to Sociology and Criminology, as well as the soft skills that support future career success. They also spoke with current students about university life, entry requirements, and the benefits of higher education.
The trip was a valuable experience that inspired many students to consider studying Sociology or Criminology at a higher level. The group represented the school exceptionally well, demonstrating enthusiasm, maturity and thoughtful engagement throughout the day. Dr Laura Bower even commented on how impressed she was that our students had been asking better questions than the undergraduate students!

For the third year in a row, the Rosebery squash team reached the National Schools Finals in Edgbaston - an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to their dedication, consistency and commitment. Competing against top private schools from across the country, the girls once again proved that they can more than hold their own on the national stage.
The day began with an early start as the team travelled to Birmingham feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. After warming up, they faced Oxford High School in their first round and delivered an exceptional performance. Aoife VDV 8PY set the tone with dominant serving and confident play, securing two highly convincing wins. Caitlin K 9CX, the least experienced member of the team, showed remarkable determination, covering every inch of the court and surprising even herself as she won both of her games. At the same time, Arlia P 8CX produced some of her best squash of the season, displaying her trademark flair to take two strong victories, while Cali B 10CX fought through a tough and well‑matched battle but ultimately secured her win in three games. Finishing the round, Hazel P 10EX remained composed despite the pressure of playing last and delivered two technically impressive and assured wins.
Their second match was against Edgbaston High School, who were known to have exceptionally strong top‑ranked players. Rosebery approached the round with determination, and both Arlia and Caitlyn shone again with excellent victories. Aoife pushed her opponent to a deciding game in a closely contested match, but this time narrowly missed out. Although Cali and Hazel were unable to take their games, they discovered afterwards that one of their opponents competes for England at U12 level - a reminder of the incredibly high standard of the competition.
In their final match, Rosebery faced Barnard Castle School, knowing a win would secure a top‑two finish. Caitlyn continued her outstanding form by completing her third win of the day with confidence. Aoife followed with another powerful and precise performance, and Arlia added her third well‑deserved victory, maintaining her impressive momentum. Cali recovered from a tense first game to come back even stronger in the second, taking both games with real grit and determination. Hazel closed the day in superb style, looking relaxed and controlled as she delivered two dominant wins, leaving Barnard Castle unable to keep pace with her accuracy and consistency.
When the final results were announced, the girls finished in second place nationally, a remarkable achievement at such a high level of competition. They collected their silver medals proudly and immediately looked to the future, declaring, "We've won a bronze, now a silver, so next year that gold will be ours!", speaking like the motivated and ambitious athletes they truly are.
A huge congratulations to the whole team for their exceptional performances, resilience and team spirit. They should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, and it was a privilege to witness such a memorable day of squash.

Our Year 8 netball team delivered an excellent performance on Monday, securing a 22–1 victory against Epsom and Ewell. From the first whistle, the team demonstrated strong footwork, sharp passing and intelligent movement, maintaining possession confidently and controlling the pace of the game throughout.
Ellie M 8PY, playing as Goal Shooter, was outstanding, showing pinpoint accuracy and assured shooting that kept the score steadily climbing. Her ability to find space and convert opportunities was a standout feature of the match.
The team’s cohesion and communication were exceptional, with players working seamlessly to create scoring chances, intercept passes and support one another in both attack and defence. Every member of the squad contributed to a disciplined and dominant performance.
Epsom and Ewell showed great determination, and their Player of the Match nomination went to Kitty P 8PY for her impressive effort and skill on the court.
Miss Dawson - PE Teacher
Another fantastic team success for the Year 10 Netball team!
Year 10 delivered an excellent performance on Tuesday, securing a dominant 29–1 victory against Manor House School. From the very first whistle, the team displayed great energy and teamwork across the court.
The defence was outstanding, with Abi L 10EY, Erica F 10CX and Millie D 10MY putting in a superb effort. Their tight marking and well‑timed interceptions made it extremely difficult for Manor House to create scoring opportunities, limiting them to just a single goal.
In attack, Rhianna S 10MX and India R 10CY demonstrated impressive shooting accuracy and strong movement in the circle. Their consistent finishing allowed the team to build the score steadily and remain in full control of the game.
Overall, the team excelled. Congratulations to India, who was voted Attacking Player of the Match, and to Abi, who was awarded Defensive Player of the Match. Well done, everyone!
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
Last week, the Year 9 netball team travelled to The Priory for their NSSSA league fixture. We arrived in glorious sunshine, which made such a difference to everyone’s morale after what has been a very long and wet winter!
After a quick warm‑up, the girls got straight into action with their usual high intensity. It was a fast‑paced first half, and although The Priory started well and scored a couple of early goals, Rosebery were commanding the game from the outset and quickly took the lead.
Phoebe B 9CY and Polly H 9EX worked superbly around the D, and with brilliant feeds from Caitlin H 9CY and Neve K 9CY, the team created - and converted - ample scoring opportunities. By half time, Rosebery held a convincing 18–4 lead.
The second half followed the same pattern, with Rosebery’s defence even more precise. Ivy C 9MY, Chloe B 9MY, Juno B 9MY and Evie O‑S 9MY were outstanding in the defensive third, intercepting repeatedly and preventing The Priory from scoring at all - an incredible achievement! Meanwhile, our shooters continued to convert confidently from all areas of the D, making Rosebery unstoppable.
A fantastic game to watch and umpire - well done, girls!
Final score: 31–4.
