CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
We’ve enjoyed a wonderful final week of term at Rosebery, filled with Christmas Cheer and Celebration Assemblies! Christmas lunch served on Tuesday and Wednesday was a particularly festive highlight – I must thank the catering team from Taylor Shaw for putting on a wonderful spread, which even included homemade Christmas cookies and deserts created by some of their staff, and the Leadership Team and colleagues for chipping in to help serve the students – as well as demonstrating some questionable Christmas dance moves!
Year 10 sound like they are having a fabulous time skiing in Les Deux Alpes, accompanied by the trip bears, Rose & Barry, who managed to make it into the pilot’s cock pit on their outward journey! Do head over to Instagram to follow them and all Rosebery trips at @roseberyschooltrips
To bring 2025 to a close, we then hosted our annual Prize Giving event yesterday evening, to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the Year 11 and Year 13 classes of 2025 – of whom we could not be prouder. You can find a copy of the programme linked via the image attached, which includes all prize winners as details of the winners of the inaugural Gemma Devonish Prizes.
It was fitting to have several members of Gemma’s family present on the evening, with Leanne, Gemma’s sister, and Rose, Gemma’s mum, joining us on stage to give out those awards – and I’m grateful to the kind and powerful words shared by Leanne on behalf of the Devonish family.
This is a remarkable school, your daughters are remarkable young women, and I must once again thank you all for the remarkable support, kindness and empathy you have shown us throughout an incredibly challenging calendar year to date.
Christmas is not always a happy nor joyful time for everyone, indeed it will sadly be very challenging for some of you reading this today, but nevertheless, I do hope that you and your family manage to enjoy a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Please be reminded that Monday 5 January 2026 is an INSET day, so the school is closed to students.
All students return to school on Tuesday 6 January, with the usual start time of 8.30am and the normal 5 period day – noting that it will be Week 2 of the timetable. Updated timetables will be emailed to students in the New Year, but changes (which are very limited in number) are also viewable on ePraise and Bromcom.

Wow, what a term we have had! It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago, Year 7 were sitting nervously in their seats for their first assembly, wondering if they might get lost, forget their homework, or make any friends. Now, they are enthusiastic and confident Rosebery girls who have successfully completed their first term!
As it is the final week of term, we held our Celebration Assembly – a wonderful opportunity to recognise all the amazing things our students have achieved this half term. From maintaining 0 demerits or 100% attendance, to showing courage and kindness that make them worthy of our top prizes, there was so much to celebrate. The best part, though, is hearing the gasps of delight when a winner’s name is announced, followed by the round of applause from their peers. It is truly heartening to see girls supporting girls – one of the many reasons why Rosebery is so special.
As we head into the Christmas break, we know that many students may enjoy wearing make-up, nail varnish, or jewellery – and we hope they love doing so! We simply ask for your support in ensuring that students comply with our uniform policy (available on the website) before school resumes. Thank you for helping to replace any lost or broken school shoes and ensuring that make-up, jewellery, and nail polish are removed before the start of term.
Stern reminders over, it remains only to wish you a wonderful Christmas break. We hope you can spend time with loved ones, doing the activities that bring you joy, so that you return feeling rested and restored when the Rosebery News lands in your inbox again.
Merry Christmas!

The final day of term has arrived! Although I am away on a school trip, I know our students are filled with a wonderful sense of pride and accomplishment. This is always a special moment in the year – an opportunity to pause, reflect, and recognise just how far each student has come, demonstrating progress, not perfection.
Throughout this term, Year 8 have achieved so much. They have built new friendships across different forms and stepped out of their comfort zones by trying new clubs – I hear Art Club was a huge hit! In lessons, they have found their voice through thoughtful discussions – a special mention to 8PX in Religious Studies! We are also delighted that over 70% of Year 8 students have received little to no demerits – a very proud Miss Monk indeed!
As we head into the Christmas break, it’s important that Year 8 take time to rest, relax, and recharge. After such a busy term of learning, growing, and achieving, they truly deserve it. We look forward to welcoming Year 8 back on Tuesday 6 January, full of energy, curiosity, and ready to embrace the new year!
Ahead of returning, please ensure your daughter is fully prepared for school with the correct equipment, uniform, and a positive attitude towards learning. Punctuality and homework will be key focuses next half term, so please check that your daughter is catching the earlier bus to arrive on time.

Year 10 have had a fantastic term and deserve huge praise for the effort, enthusiasm, and determination they have shown. They have worked incredibly hard across all subjects and have made a strong start to their GCSE journey. Their positive attitude and commitment to learning mean they are already well on their way to achieving a successful and rewarding first year of GCSE study.
As we look ahead to the new year, we are excited about the new challenges and opportunities it will bring. Year 10 have built excellent foundations this term, and we are confident they will continue to grow in confidence, skill, and ambition as they move forward.
We would like to finish by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope you all enjoy a well‑earned break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year, refreshed and ready to build on this fantastic start.

of Year 11
A huge congratulations to everyone who received an award in this morning’s Celebration Assembly. We are incredibly proud of Year 11 and have enjoyed a wonderful week of celebrations, recognising achievements such as the highest points on Epraise, outstanding learner qualities highlighted in recent reports, progress in grades, and remarkable attainment overall.
This morning, we celebrated the 100 students with 90% or above attendance and zero demerits, rewarding them with a hot chocolate cup and set to enjoy over the Christmas break.
Our recent mock results revealed that the 194 students with 90% or above attendance scored, on average, one whole grade higher than those with less than 90% attendance. This clearly demonstrates the importance of attendance, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting term ahead in 2026.
Thank you for all your support and kindness this term. We were delighted to deliver the generous toy donations to Epsom Hospital’s Casey Ward earlier this week. The staff were extremely grateful and shared that these gifts will bring smiles to children spending Christmas in hospital.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2026.

Remember, assessments will run from Monday 5 January to Tuesday 13 January 2026. Please make sure you know what you’re being assessed on and when, and use the Christmas break wisely to prepare.
Also, take some time to reflect on the messages we’ve discussed in our PDC lessons about managing your physical and emotional well-being. Miss Morris - Maths Teacher
As its Christmas we let the cast and crew take a well earned break and have instead got the Senior Leadership team involved in all things SIX.
1. Besides ruling the stage in SIX, what’s your all-time favourite musical?
My favourite musical, apart from Six, has to be Matilda the Musical. Every detail, from the imaginative set to the brilliantly quick‑witted songs, had me completely captivated. I’ve always loved the story of Matilda, but this production brought her world to life in a way that was clever, funny and utterly unforgettable.
Ms Bailey
2. Which Christmas song makes you want to grab a mic and belt it out in the shower?
'Step into Christmas' by Elton John
Miss Lowe
3. If you could be any of the SIX queens, who would you be and why?
I absolutely love Henry the VIII and this era of history, having studied it at GCSE and A Level, so I know exactly who I would like to be - Anne Boleyn! Despite the fact that she had her head chopped off, she was the feistiest of his queens, and he found that both engaging and frustrating. She remained true to herself right to her end!
Mrs Byrne
4. Who’s your ultimate inspiration in the world of performing arts?
I am a big fan of Viola Davis. Not only is she a total powerhouse of an actor (watch her 2016 film Fences), she's also a trailblazer as the first black actor to achieve an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Tony (the EGOT), despite growing up in extreme poverty. She won her Grammy for her narration of her autobiography, 'Finding Me', which is a beautiful and inspiring listen. I often remember her words about joy and hope, particularly in difficult circumstances: “There will be hard times and then joy will come”.
Ms Hunter
5. You’re invited to a Tudor banquet — what dish are you bringing and why?
I'd be bringing multiple roast turkeys for the banquet with all the trimmings. I grew up on a turkey farm, plucking my first turkey at the age of 7. My dad still farms turkeys now, rearing 2500 every year.
Mr Sheffield
6. If you were Queens (or Kings) for a day, what’s the first royal decree you’d make?
Mr Styles: If I were King for a day, my first royal decree would be to make afternoon naps compulsory, nationwide. Failure to comply would be considered treason.
Mr Harvey: It seems Mr Styles has gone for “King for a Day,” when, strictly speaking, he should be Queen for a day. So, in the spirit of proper regal representation, I’ll officially declare him Queen, with all the pomp, pageantry and mandatory afternoon naps that entails. I fully support this decree - nationwide siestas sounds like a very wise royal policy to me.
As SIX: The Teen Edition brings the queens to the stage and the holidays fill the air with cheer, we had to ask "If you were hosting a Tudor Christmas feast at the palace, festive tradition would you bring from the modern day to impress the court?"
(Think snow machines in the Great Hall or a royal karaoke battle!)
The Great Hall has traded its lutes for silent discos, as courtiers swap courtly dances for wireless headphones, toggling between festive beats and choral classics. Henry VIII’s competitive streak has found a new outlet in modern quiz games, with the King using tablets to dominate high-speed trivia battles, leaving his courtiers "Outsmarted".
The palace’s famous maze now hosts augmented reality treasure hunts, where guests uncover digital secrets hidden within the ancient hedges using smartphones. Meanwhile, the Royal Kitchens have pivoted to 2025 food trends, serving botanical mocktails and vegan small bites to a court captivated by this high-tech "Misrule." The King, reportedly a fan of the new tech, was last seen searching for a virtual dragon near the Great Watching Chamber.
Mr Lach
Tinsel? Try Tudor Tapestries!
Instead of fairy lights and tinsel, Tudor homes were decorated with evergreen branches, holly, ivy, and bay leaves to symbolise eternal life and keep away evil spirits. Think of it as the original Pinterest-worthy décor!
12 Days of Feasting
The Tudors didn’t just celebrate Christmas Day - they partied for 12 whole days, from Christmas Day to Epiphany (January 6th). That’s nearly two weeks of feasting, music, dancing, and merrymaking. Move over, advent calendars!
Tudor Turkey Time
Turkeys were a new and exciting addition to the Tudor Christmas table, having been introduced to England from the Americas in the early 1500s. Before that, boar’s head was the showstopper dish — often served with an apple in its mouth!
Mumming & Merriment
During the festive season, mummers (masked performers) would put on plays and dances in the streets and noble houses. Sound familiar? It’s like the Tudor version of a Christmas panto — with a lot more velvet and probably fewer jokes about Brussels sprouts.
Gifts… but not on Christmas Day!
Tudors didn’t exchange presents on December 25th. Instead, they gave gifts on New Year’s Day, often small tokens like gloves, oranges, or handmade trinkets. So if you forgot someone’s gift, just say you’re being historically accurate!
Wassailing Wonders
Forget carol singing — Tudors went wassailing, where groups would sing and offer a drink from the wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. It was part carol, part party, part excuse to drink spiced cider!
We’re inviting local businesses, organisations, and families to sponsor our upcoming school production of SIX: Teen Edition by purchasing space in the official show programme.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support the arts at Rosebery while showcasing your business or sending a message of encouragement to the cast and crew!
Sponsorship Options:
Half-page advert – £30
Full-page advert – £60
All sponsors will be featured in the printed programme distributed during performance week.
If you're interested or would like more details, please email cbrew1@roseberyschool.co.uk
Thank you for helping us make this production truly unforgettable!
Last week saw the exciting return of House Netball, and what a fantastic few days of sport we were privileged to witness!
Monday 8 December kicked off with Year 7, who were absolutely brilliant. Normally, we expect plenty of questions and a little extra transition time between matches, but these girls were on top form and knew exactly what they were doing!
On Tuesday, Year 8 took to the courts and impressed us with their organisation and efficiency. They also demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, cheering each other on during and after the games.
Wednesday brought Year 9 – and the sunshine! This was arguably the best session in terms of quality of play, as the Year 9 girls showcased their experience and skill. They were also fantastic at organising their teams and rotating their squads fairly.
A huge congratulations to all players, teams, and Houses for an incredible three days of House Netball! And a special thank you to the Games Captains and Year 12 students who worked tirelessly to umpire and score throughout the event.
