It’s Friday, the sun is shining, and I have the pleasure of reflecting on an excellent start to the new academic year. Unlike the changeable and disappointing weather of late, each year group have left my colleagues and I hugely impressed by the sense of purpose with which they have returned - with a clear determination and motivation to stretch and challenge themselves academically.
However, despite another Summer of exceptional results at both A Level and GCSE, I want to have my cake and eat it – academic success is great, but the Rosebery journey and experience is about far more, it’s about our girls flourishing and becoming the best version of themselves. To this end, my assemblies throughout the week have focussed on two key words that will form part of our mantra and focus for the year ahead – Remarkable & Proud.
Drawing on the Olympic and Paralympic experiences of Team GB, I have asked our girls to work hard and dream big as they find their remarkable. I want them to be proud of who they are and what they can and will accomplish. For you, our families, this is how I’d like to frame our vision:
“Beyond academics, we are committed to helping your daughter achieve remarkable things, both inside and outside the classroom, so she can flourish in whichever path she chooses. As she progresses through her Rosebery journey, we will nurture her growth into a confident, compassionate young woman who is proud of who she is and all she has accomplished. Our goal is for every Rosebery girl to leave our school standing tall, equipped for the future, and ready to make her mark on the world.”
This will sit alongside our existing mantra of Joyful & Ambitious, where I have asked colleagues to rise to the following challenge for our girls, and for you, our families:
“At Rosebery, we design and implement a curriculum that is both joyful and ambitious, ensuring that your daughter not only faces challenges but also experiences the deep satisfaction and happiness that comes from overcoming them. We believe that learning should be an exciting journey, where every classroom is a place of discovery and delight.”
These are bold words, and we are not perfect, and I am sure you will let us know when we fall short of these aims and ambitions, however, the start of a new academic year seems a good time to state our intentions and how we mean to go on.
I am sure many of you will have watched it already, but if you’d like to watch the BBC’s closing montage from the Paris Olympics, which I used to frame my assemblies this week, it can be viewed below:
In support of achieving these goals, we are launching E Praise with students and families, which will allow students to ‘spend’ their Merits, alongside a revamp of our approach to recognising and rewarding our students - adding ‘Thank You Friday’s’ and ‘Proud Work’ stickers and merits to our existing offer.
And in response to parental feedback, we will publish our Curriculum Overviews on our website at the end of September, so you are better informed about what your daughter is currently studying, what she will be studying next, and in the future, so you can help stretch and challenge her at home, or supplement the curriculum as you see fit.
Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Year 7 have officially completed a full week of lessons, and we could not be prouder of their courage and kindness. Year 7 have approached lessons with enthusiasm and determination. It has been a joy to see students playing basketball in PE, becoming familiar with lab equipment in Science, shining with confidence in Drama and indulging in the canteen food at break and lunchtimes. It was a pleasure to meet parents/carers at Information Evening on Tuesday to share our vision for Year 7. You can view the information slides by clicking HERE.
A reminder that clubs and our extra-curricular challenge cards launch from Monday 16 September. We encourage Year 7 to try as many new clubs as possible to help them find their 'remarkable and proud' skills. Well done to our Stars of the Week for having courage and being kind. Keep up the good work!

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Year 8 back for their first full week from their summer break! It has truly been a joy to see them stopping by the Year 8 office, eager to share their fantastic summer adventures and how their first week back has been. The energy and enthusiasm of our students as they dived right back into the school routine has been nothing short of inspiring!
This week, Year 8 had an assembly led by Mr Lach, where we celebrated the outstanding achievements of the Team GB Olympians and Paralympians. It was a powerful reminder of what excellence looks like and how discipline and dedication is crucial to success. It was lovely to see Year 8 absorb these empowering lessons and apply it to their learning - whether it was showcasing resilience and curiosity in Science, teamwork in PE, or engaging in spirited debates in History.
Not only did students apply these learning qualities in lessons, but they also demonstrated them in clubs as the PE extra-curricular timetable commenced. After so many students attended clubs in Year 7, we would love to see this continue this year, especially in light of the success from Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. Wider school clubs commence next week alongside Year 8 homework club, which will take place every Tuesday in OK3 from 3.15pm to 4.15pm, and is designed to help our students get organised and manage their workloads effectively. Keep an eye out for some incentives that will be announced soon.
Finally, we look forward to welcoming parents to our Year 8 Information Evening next Tuesday. The presentation slides from the evening will be available on the Rosebery School website towards the end of the week.

It has been such a wonderful first full week back for Year 9, and I’ve been amazed with how resilient, dedicated and engaged the group have been after a long summer break, it’s almost as if they’ve never left!
I’ve been particularly pleased with how many staff members have commented on the inquisitive questions, and wanting to learn as much as possible in their new option subjects; not to mention the absolute bucket-load of merits that Year 9 have earned, even achieving more than any other year group so far. If the past week and a half is indicative of what’s to come this year, then I will absolutely run out of superlatives by December!
Stars of the Week will return individually next issue, but this week I’d like to recognise every Year 9 student’s efforts so far. I’m a very proud Head of Year this week.
Have a lovely weekend!
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 9
Ms Cooke - Deputy Head of Year 9
We couldn’t be prouder of Year 10 and their start to this academic year. As those working in a school, we are so fortunate to effectively have two New Year’s - one in January and one in September. For me, it has been a joy seeing how much the year group have matured over the summer holidays. Their approach to work in lessons is remarkable and I have been walking around the school site with a smile on my face after hearing staff say things such as "your Year 10’s were brilliant in my lesson this morning". I wanted to thank you for your support at home, because this doesn’t happen without all of us working together as a team.
Year 10 is a new journey for the students, as they embark the GCSE route and lesson content begins to get tougher, as well as the added expectation of independent study. We will be here to support them when it is required, as well as to celebrate our remarkable and proud moments for Year 10.
We look forward to seeing you at our Information Evening on Tuesday 24 September (please see the letter sent out last week for details).
10CX: Elizabeth B and Sophie H - for making such a positive start to Year 10, both achieving the most amount of merits in the form.

Mr Waight - Head of Year 10
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 10
It was wonderful to see you all at last night’s Information Evening. To see so many of you there despite the pouring rain was much appreciated, and we are so glad to have you with us on this journey as we navigate Year 11 with high ambitions and a healthy sprinkling of joy too.
Year 11 have had a fantastic start to the year and their maturity and focus has been commended by staff. The focus and motivations they have found in the past few months is very encouraging and, if this continues, they will undoubtedly go very far!
As Mr Hewett referenced in our Information Evening, last year we collaborated with our Student Voice group about finding the best way to recognise and reward pupils for their efforts. Students felt that Stars of the Week was not something they wanted to continue in Year 11, but we would still like to recognise students and share their achievements with you. As well as ‘Ambition’ and ‘Joy’ being our longstanding watchwords as a school, we also want to add ‘Remarkable’ and ‘Proud’.
This week’s Rosebery Remarkable students are Alison E 11PX, for being part of the team that came 2nd place in the All England Dance Finals; and Chloe W 11PY, who popped by the office to share the wonderful volunteering work she is doing with Epsom Riding for the Disabled Association. We are so proud of both girls for their dedication and talents.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 11
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 11
On Wednesday 31 July, the inters team from Ambition Dance Company in Epsom went to the All England Dance Finals in Wolverhampton, having qualified from the South East Regional Finals. Despite not even expecting to get to the finals, the team (including several Rosebery girls) came 2nd in the Intermediate Jazz/Modern Large Group category. Many congratulations goes to Libby P 7MY, Ciara M 8CY, Holly W 8MX, Emma B 9EY, Amy S 9CX, Sophie T and Izzie W 9PX, Alison E 11PX and Immy 11EY.
We are excited to be launching our offering of lunchtime and afterschool activities from Monday 16 September. Students will be provided with information in assemblies next week about our new app, 'Epraise', where they can sign up to activities as well as track their merits in a user-friendly way. More information about this will follow soon.
Mr Waight - Educational Visits co-ordinator and Enrichment
Last year was particularly successful with a record number of students taking part in a variety of sporting activities and there were notable achievements in Netball, Football, Hockey, Cheerleading and Athletics.
Sports clubs will continue next week and are open to all students. The PE clubs timetable is included below. Please do not worry if you cannot make Week 1, all students are welcome to join at any time. We encourage participation and enjoyment and, therefore, students are welcome to attend all clubs whether that be competitively or recreationally. A reminder to students that clubs at Rosebery are open to all (excluding trampolining). A reminder that you don't have to attend every week and can join at any time.
There will also be many opportunities to take part in sporting fixtures against other local state and private schools. This year we will be entering teams into the District Netball and Hockey competitions, County Netball and Football Tournaments and the English Schools Football Cup. Competitions in Cross Country, Rugby and Badminton have also been added to this year's calendar.
When attending a club, students should go directly to the PE Department, get changed in the changing rooms next to the purple gym and remember to bring a snack and water bottle with them. Information on the whiteboard by the office will direct students to their club, but the PE team will always be around to help.
We look forward to seeing you next week.
Lunch clubs: 1.15pm to 1.55pm
After school clubs: 3.10pm to 4.10pm
