After a phenomenal week of fun and fundraising, the focus of this week’s Rosebery News must be our RAG Week, led by our fantastic Sixth Form Prefect Team; Lexie D 13H, Jessica L 13H, Jessica S 13E, Iyza S 13A, Rania A 13H, Jemima M 13B, Melody M 13H, Noreen I 13H, Naomi G 13H and Georgia S 13B and brilliantly supported by many other Sixth Form students.
Across the week, hundreds of donuts and sweets have been eaten, students have cheered on our Rosebery Netballers in the annual match against Glyn, teachers have sung, danced, been quizzed, played Benchball and have been sponged all in the aid of the Epsom Pantry, Save the Children, Breast Cancer Now, Oxfam and Children in Need charities.
We will announce the final (hopefully record breaking!) figure next week, but we are so grateful for the support of students and parents/carers in raising hundreds of pounds for such deserving causes - you are still able to donate via ParentPay to RAG Week.
I hope you will enjoy viewing some of the key images from a terrific week, ending with the spectacular Teachers' Top of the Pops this afternoon - please do ask your daughter about it - and a huge congratulations to team Maths on their epic victory!
Have a lovely weekend.

PGL was a great success last week. Year 7's first residential trip was an abundance of fun and laughter and created lots of memories. It was lovely to see the bond that the Year 7 students have with each other outside the classroom. The giant swing and vertical challenge proved this year group have a lot of brilliant skills.
The end of the week also marks Year 7's first RAG Week at Rosebery! It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and excitement, with Year 7 participating in raising as much money possible for our designated charities, including Breast Cancer Awareness. This week, Year 7 experienced Sponge the Teacher, Tug of War and our historic Rosebery Teacher's Top of the Pops, in which they may have spotted Miss Monk in a pink wig!
With our first half term nearly coming to an end, I am grateful for the motivation and support you are reinforcing with the students about the importance of attending school and being that extra piece of encouragement they may need on a tired morning.

As we head towards half term, Year 8 have embraced the full spirit of school community and house spirit. As part of our Rag Week activities, our Year 8 students have eagerly championed our sixth formers take on Glyn’s netball team, they have enjoyed sponging their teachers and watching our Teacher’s Top of the Pops. We thank all our pupils for their charity giving and joining in with these activities so enthusiastically. Our House assemblies this week also endorsed the spirit of community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students in their efforts to contribute towards form competitions. A special congratulations goes out to 8CX and 8CY for their contributions in the Duo Lingo competition over the past few weeks, as Curie House took the lead with this competition. Curie House as a collective, are heading up the house leaderboard across all competitions this term- well done! We look forward to seeing whether our House Song and House Motto competition will change this!
Aside from the house competitions and RAG week, it has been lovely to see year 8 in action this week. We have especially enjoyed hearing about the anti-bullying plays that are currently being put together in Drama and seeing some of these taking shape. As a compliment to this theme- this weeks’ instalment of ‘Drama, Rumours and Secrets’ has included some opportunities for our pupils to discuss health friendships and setting boundaries. This tutor time session allowed our students to work through some scenarios and assess, as a class, appropriate ways of responding to different situations.
As the half term draws to a close, we still have so many great things to look forward to next week, including our first House Games of the year this Tuesday! Who will take home the glory? Good luck to everyone!

The spirit of community was palpable this week, with our yearly RAG Week bringing the excitement of activities, non-uniform, the ever-heralded Top of the Pops performance and enough sales of treats and doughnuts to ensure that students have had more than enough energy to keep the excitement bubbling!
I’m particularly excited looking forward to two things. The first being our first edition of House Games, with Year 9 benchball taking place on Wednesday during period 5, the second being our celebration assembly on Wednesday morning. I always love getting to praise all of the wonderful things that Year 9 have been displaying each and every term, but this year feels far more special after seeing just how brilliantly Year 9 have started their options subjects and applied themselves immediately. Especially during such a long and tiring half term.
Finally, our deadline for any options subjects has now passed. Students will no longer be able to make any changes to option subjects going forward until our final curriculum refinement going into Year 10.
Half term is on the horizon!

Mr Pingree - Head of Year 9
Ms Cooke - Deputy Head of Year 9
This week, students have embraced the sense of community, which was our message in the House assemblies. As part of RAG week, Rosebery really come together and show their support in a number of ways. The flock of students for the Krispy Kreme donuts as well as buying wristbands for the lunchtime events shows how supportive we all are.
These qualities go hand in hand with what I see the majority of our year group demonstrating in lessons and social time. It is always a pleasure to pop into lessons and see the wonderful work that students are doing. In particular this week I witnessed students scaffolding and supporting their peers with some of their verbal responses, when the teachers have checked their understanding.
A number of students this week have been to see me to express how tired they are and the want for a half term break. We are all feeling exhausted, but this is mainly due to the hard work and effort that Year 10 have put into the start of their GCSE journey. I cannot wait to celebrate this next week in our Celebration Assembly.
A number of Year 10 students have not logged into Epraise, which I urge them to do so they can spend their merits in our rewards shop. If there are any problems with this then students can come and speak to me.
We are so nearly there – only one more week, but for now, I would like to wish you a lovely weekend.
⭐ STARS OF THE WEEK ⭐

Mr Waight - Head of Year 10
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 10
Year 11 Futures Day, which culminated in Sixth Form Open Evening, was undoubtedly the highlight this week. The students had sessions where they visualised and articulated the future they want for themselves, followed by conversations with our Year 12 students, a talk from James at GapForce about gap years, and information on Rosebery Sixth Form – including a chance to sample the Sixth Form Coffee Bar!
It was brilliant to see their enthusiasm and seriousness when planning their futures, but we also know that this is a big decision to be made with a lot of information. Therefore, please do take the time to sit down and re-read the Rosebery Sixth Form prospectus (via the Rosebery Website) and support your child in weighing up the options. We will also be supporting from school via more specific conversations as students begin to finalise their choices.
Year 11 were also given their mock timetables on Wednesday; please ensure you have had a look and noted the dates and times of their exams. We will be spelling out the day-to-day details closer to the time, but as we approach half term, please support your child in drawing up a revision schedule using the specific tasks that have been set for them to do by their class teachers.
We always seek to recognise our remarkable students who make us proud, and this week’s Rosebery Remarkable students are Jessica B 1CY and Amy H 11PY for advocating for themselves and their futures so brilliantly this week.

Here’s how it works:
Your child opens a book to the first page. They read the page and hold up one finger for every word they don’t know or can’t pronounce. The number of fingers they’re holding up by the end of the page tells them if the book is the right level.
0-1 fingers: It’s too easy.
2-3 fingers: It’s just right.
4-5 fingers: It’s too hard (or best read aloud with a friend).
Two to three fingers is the sweet spot. If they’re holding up any more or less, that’s a clue that they should try to find another book if they’re reading independently.
“It is three books in one and each book is a mystery murder case. It is really interesting and has lots of twists in the story! I would love to read more books in the series”
Amelia T 7MY
“It is an adventurous and addictive series of books, and it is based in the Victorian times; it taught me about a bit of the past”
Chiara D 7MY
“It is a heart-warming story about a ginger tom-cat finding his way into a man’s life and their adventures together”
Rin B C 7MY
“It’s about somebody who tries to fit in but everything changes when she finds out she has autism. I loved seeing how her life changes”
India S 7MY
“I loved it because it explains boarding school a long time ago. It also helped me expand my vocabulary even further”
Hannah S 7MY
“It was an amazing story about not giving up when things are hard. It is quite old but I could still understand it and the characters have very interesting personalities”
Carys P 7MY
“I loved it because it’s very interesting and pulls you into the story, the characters are fun and determined which is what we should be in life”
Chloe H 7MY
“I loved it because it’s a book about a mystery killer. It has lots of twists about who the killer could be”

Rhea T 11MY was in the recording studio over the summer recording her first professional studio session on the saxophone and clarinet for the new Craig Revel Horwood album 'Revelations', due for release on Friday 18 October. This is an amazing achievement for Rhea and hopefully the first professional recording of many - well done!
As mentioned in a previous Rosebery News issue, Lili W 11CX auditioned and was chosen to perform as part of Kerry Ellis’ national tour. Lili performed last Thursday evening at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley and by all accounts was amazing. Congratulations Lili, I’m sure it’s not the first time we will see you on a big stage.
The final congratulations go to Annabelle C 10EX, who took her Grade 8 piano exam last weekend and not only passed but was awarded a distinction! This is an amazing achievement, not only because Grade 8 is the highest practical exam you can take, but also because Annabelle is in Year 10. Well done, Annabelle!
We are very fortunate at Rosebery to have a fabulous team of peripatetic music teachers. Please click HERE to find out more information if you are interested in getting lessons for your daughter. Each week I have been featuring one of the team and this week, it’s the all-action superhero that is Mrs Baylis.

The Year 11 Netball team has kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, securing two impressive victories in the NSSSA League and the St Teresa's District Tournament.
Last week, the team stormed to a convincing win against Hinchley Wood in their first league match, setting the tone for what would be an exceptional start to the season. They followed this up with a remarkable performance at the St Teresa's District Tournament this week, where they played against tough competition, including Sutton High, Howard of Effingham, and St Teresa’s.
Throughout the tournament, the girls remained undefeated, demonstrating teamwork and skill in every game. Freya B 11PX, Zara R 11CY, and Carrie L 11EX were outstanding in their shooting, consistently delivering points under pressure. Rosie G 11MY and Tillie F 11CY showed exceptional control in the centre, communicating effectively and moving the ball around the court with precision. Abi 11EX and Eilidh M 11CX were solid in defence, making it difficult for opponents to break through.
The team’s hard work paid off, as they finished the day with gold medals in hand, celebrating a wonderful all-round performance. What an incredible way to begin the season!
It’s wonderful to highlight the achievements of the Senior Sixth Form Netball team, whose dedication and hard work during Wednesday afternoon and Tuesday after-school training sessions have already begun to pay off this season.
The team started strong with a thrilling victory against Hinchley Wood, winning 29-20 in a closely contested match. With 15 players bringing depth and versatility to the squad, they demonstrated their growing strength and cohesion on the court.
Following this, the team put on a fantastic display at the U18 District Tournament held at St Teresa's. Competing against some tough opponents, they finished in a respectable 4th place, winning 3 out of their 6 matches. A special mention goes to Emily C 13C, Helena S 13H, Imogen G and Emily N 13D, who played their final district tournament with the team, leaving a lasting legacy for future players.
A great start to the season, with much more to come from this talented squad!
Miss Croft - Head of PE
The Year 7 footballers had their first away fixture of the season on Tuesday afternoon, travelling to Epsom and Ewell High School for a 7-a-side tournament. The format of the tournament included all five teams playing each other. Fortunately, our first match was between our own teams—Rosebery 1 v Rosebery 2—which turned out to be a tightly contested game. Both teams kept possession well, with several scoring opportunities saved by the goalkeepers. However, with just a few minutes left on the clock, Rosebery 1 managed to sneak in a goal, winning the game 1-0.
In the second round of matches, Rosebery 1 faced St Andrews and delivered a convincing 2-0 victory, with Chloe V 7PX scoring both goals—her first, an incredible strike past the keeper! Meanwhile, Rosebery 2 had a hard-fought game against Blenheim, with both sides maintaining strong control over the ball, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
Rosebery 2’s next challenge was against Epsom and Ewell, a team made up of several club players familiar to our girls. Despite this, Rosebery 2 held firm with some brilliant saves and capitalised on a quick turnover, scoring to secure a 1-0 victory. This impressive result gave the team a confidence boost. Rosebery 1, on the other hand, faced Blenheim, who were known for their skill. Blenheim took an early lead with a quick goal, but Rosebery 1 responded swiftly, equalising soon after and then scoring a second goal in the dying minutes to win 2-1.
In their final match, Rosebery 2 went up against St Andrews, finishing the tournament on a high with a 1-0 win. Rosebery 1’s last game was a must-win against Epsom and Ewell to secure first place. Unfortunately, the game didn’t start as planned, with the defence caught out early, allowing Epsom and Ewell to score twice in quick succession. Rosebery 1 found themselves 2-0 down, but their resilience was outstanding. In a remarkable comeback, they scored three goals, winning the game 3-2!
The final standings of the tournament saw Rosebery 2 finish in second place and Rosebery 1 claim the top spot. It was a fantastic performance from both teams, and we can’t wait to see them in action again soon.

At Rosebery School we are developing our support for young carers. Young carers are young people who have caring roles for family members or friends with physical or mental health problems or disabilities, or drug or alcohol problems.
My name is Amanda Wild and I am the main contact for young carers in the school. I liaise with pupils, families and staff in order to ensure that pupils, who are carers, are able to achieve and to enjoy their education. The school is in contact with Surrey Young Carers, a charity to whom the school can refer for further assistance.
If your family is affected by any of the issues mentioned above, and you and your daughter would like support, please indicate this on the form HERE.
If no help is required at this time, the school would still appreciate you sharing any circumstances that may have an impact upon your child’s education as they progress through the school. This will allow us to be aware and offer support as required. Anything you do tell us will be treated sensitively and will not be shared without your knowledge.
