It’s a beautifully sunny afternoon and we’ve had word that our Year 7 students have all arrived safely at their PGL residential and were set to enjoy a hearty lunch before embarking on a range of activities including aeroball, giant swing, zip wire, archery tag, rifle shooting and vertical challenge; and that’s before the campfire night and evening disco, set for today and tomorrow respectively. This is a hugely important part of our transition programme for Year 7, and it was lovely to able to speak about this with prospective parents/carers at our Open Mornings which took place this week. I must also give special praise to our Year 9 students who were wonderful tour guides and ambassadors of the school.
In a similar vein, we have our Sixth Form Open Evening taking place this Wednesday, and it’s so pleasing that so many of our students are looking to stay on into our Sixth Form, particularly given the exceptional student experience we are able to offer, combined with outstanding outcomes – we are also able to take on up to 30 external applicants into Year 12, so if you do know of any local families whose daughters might like to consider joining Rosebery’s Sixth Form, please do flag this event to them.
Our interactive Sixth Form Prospectus can be viewed by clicking HERE or clicking the image below.
Elsewhere this week the Art Department has visited the National Portrait Gallery, various aged teams have been competing in schools and district netball, and our students have been to see theatre performances of ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Come From Away’; you can read about these activities and much more in the remainder of Rosebery News.
It was also lovely to hear that 4 Rosebery girls, following recent trials, have been selected for Surrey Hockey Squads this year – congratulations to Morgan W (U13 Squad), Jemima S and Ava W (U15 Squad), and Katie McD (U16 Squad). In addition to this, Rowan W, in Year 11, celebrated her National League debut with the Surbiton Hockey Club Womens 2s Team. They play hockey in Division 1 South, which is just below the Premier League.
Finally, the Sixth Form Head Girls and Senior Prefects are insistent that I finish with a final RAG Week reminder. So much effort has been put into to preparing some great events in the name of Raising and Giving, so if you can, please do consider signing your daughter up for either the Weekly Ticket or Teachers’ Top the Pops Ticket on ParentPay – they’d be hugely grateful.
Wristbands
The £7 wristband which give you access to all events during the week were available on ParentPay, but your daughter will have a final chance to buy one at break time in the Quad on Monday 14 October.
If they don’t buy a weekly wristband your daughter will be able to pay at the door of each event, apart from TTOP.
Top of the Pops
If you missed getting a Top of the Pops wristband on ParentPay, your daughter will be able to purchase one every break time during RAG Week, but there’s limited availability.
Students will not be able to pay on the door for Top of the Pops.
Cash and card payment accepted.
It’s also a non-uniform day on Friday 18 October, to end the week in style, everyone is asked to wear Pink and donate a £1, to support Breast Cancer Now’s ‘Wear it Pink Day’.
Have a great weekend everyone.

This week, Year 7 have made us very proud by representing the Rosebery community remarkably, both inside and outside the classroom. I had the pleasure of visiting Year 7 lessons this week, where I was met with engagement, enthusiasm and politeness from all classrooms. It was a ray of sunshine in a particularly gloomy week.
Outside the classroom, a special shout-out goes to Aoife VDV 7PY, who was chosen to be an Honour Guard for the Harlequin’s Women’s Rugby Team match against the Exeter Chiefs. It was the opening weekend of the Premiership Women’s Rugby season and Aoife embodied our year motto of ‘Have Courage’ wonderfully.
Year 7 have continued to thrive and are becoming excellent role models for our community. They have shown determination in peer masterclasses, leadership and teamwork in their netball tournament on Wednesday and kindness to the environment through litter picking at lunchtime. As you are reading this, our first residential trip to PGL in Osmington Bay is in full swing. It has been all that the Year 7 students can talk about, and we are super excited for a fun-filled weekend ahead, full of activities such as the giant swing, aero ball and vertical climbing!

It has been another week where Year 8 have continued to amaze us with their kindness, resilience, and relentless endeavour! Mrs. Jones kicked off the week with an inspiring assembly on the importance of Black History Month. Our students were captivated by the powerful narratives of British and African history and achievements. These meaningful lessons were further enriched through engaging History, Music, and English classes, which followed these themes and narratives very closely.
Visiting Year 8 in their lessons was an absolute pleasure - from perfecting basketball skills to examining historical sources and creating beautiful aprons in textiles, it was lovely to see them so engaged with their work.
Outside the classroom, our students have also made remarkable achievements. Congratulations to Lea F 8PY for her outstanding performance in her weightlifting competition last weekend! We also congratulate our Year 8 footballers for their hard work in the English Schools' FA Cup this week. Despite a tough game, their determination shone through until the very end. We also applaud those who also participated in the cross-country meeting at Reigate Grammar School on Wednesday.
We eagerly anticipate another fantastic week ahead, filled with house assemblies, charity fundraising, and our ‘wear pink’ event for breast cancer awareness.

It has been another busy week, with students delving into Biology Week activities – check out our Instagram and X posts to see photos of 10EY’s amazing play-doh plant and animal cell sculpting. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Science department this week, popping into lessons and seeing some of the work students are proud of. In one lesson, students were evaluating their bacteria growing process and they were excited to show me the progress, although it was a little smelly!
One class that really made me smile though was Ms Nejad’s RS class. The students have grown into this confident group who kept putting their hands up in Thursday’s lesson, being so inquisitive and mature. The difference from when I saw these classes in Year 9, to now in Year 10 is remarkable. I genuinely left the room smiling and skipped to my office to give every student a merit as I was so proud of them.
This leads me nicely onto our second ‘Thank You Friday’, where I thanked the following ten students for making me smile; Charlotte H 10MX, Jemima K 10MX, Luisa H 10MY, Leah F 10EY, Millie F 10PY, Emma R 10CY, Lizzie B 10CX, Evie C 10CX, Eve A 10CX and Amelia B 10PY.
From little things like saying hello back to me around the school site, to being so polite in lessons and a pleasure to teach were just some of the reasons why these students were rewarded with this week's hot chocolate morning.
We look forward to RAG Week next week, which our Sixth Form students have worked so hard on – let's make it a record year in showing our support to the community.
Have a lovely weekend.

This week has truly flown by, with Year 11 involved in every aspect of school life. Our Year 11 Netball Team won gold at the District Netball tournament, and it was a pleasure to celebrate their victory with them as part of our ‘Thank You Thursdays’. This week we chose to recognise the whole team for the wonderful dedication they have shown to extra-curricular activities which has been a multi-year commitment for many of them. In addition, we have had Year 11 students sharing their ‘Proud work’ with us via the QR codes shown around school, which then translates into merits that can be used to buy exciting rewards from the ePraise shop.
We are also pleased to hear how many students are already considering their next steps after GCSEs, and we are delighted with the ambition and motivation that they are showing. Next Wednesday, all of Year 11 will be off-timetable to take part in Year 11 Futures Day, an event designed to help students plan what they want from the future, with the help of activities, guest speakers and returning alumni, all of whom we hope will inspire our students. This is then followed by Rosebery’s Sixth Form Open Evening, and we hope to see many of you there. The whole day is an invitation for Year 11 to get involved with enthusiasm and take the opportunity to start deciding where they want their lives to go. We hope that they will seize the opportunity with both hands and make the day a meaningful one. We can’t wait to share this with you next week.
Finally, we are pleased to share two more ‘Rosebery Remarkable’ students this week: Poppy D 11CX and Daisy S 11CY, who took on the role of Ambassadors for Dyslexia Awareness Week. Thank you for your contribution!

The Art Department is incredibly proud of our Year 11 students for their outstanding engagement during our recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery. Each student displayed creativity and enthusiasm as they explored artworks and sketched pieces that inspired them. Their exemplary behaviour was a true credit to them, and we are looking forward to seeing how this enriching experience will influence and elevate their upcoming 'Identity' project.

Engage with School Staff - We encourage parents to liaise with English teachers or librarians at school. Our teachers and librarians are more than happy to provide reading ideas and recommendations. At Rosebery, students read daily during their Rolling Read period, and we also have a Reading Bingo competition to motivate them to explore different genres.
Support Their Reading Choices - It’s important to be open-minded about your child's reading preferences. Whether they are interested in horror, fantasy, or graphic novels, allowing them to explore these genres can spark their interest. Even if a book seems challenging, this could encourage them to expand their vocabulary and improve their reading skills. Graphic novels, in particular, offer great storytelling options and can be highly engaging.
Offer a Variety of Books - Provide your child with a wide range of reading materials. Borrowing books from the library, or giving them books as gifts for special occasions, increases the chances of finding something they truly enjoy. Exposure to different authors and genres can help foster their love for reading. For example, some students have been drawn in by the first page of popular titles like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson.
Read Aloud to Your Child - Reading aloud can be a powerful way to introduce children to new stories. Whether it's a snippet from a book or a sample chapter downloaded from an online platform, hearing part of a story might just be enough to capture their interest and encourage them to read further.
Start Small - Keep in mind that less can be more. Avoid overwhelming children with large books, as shorter, less intimidating options are also available and can be just as captivating.
Model a Reading Environment - Set a positive example by reading yourself. Creating a routine where the whole family reads together for 10–15 minutes in the evening can establish reading as a normal, enjoyable activity, potentially inspiring your child to follow suit.
Explore Audiobooks - Remember that audiobooks can be just as beneficial as physical books. Surrey Library members, for instance, have access to a wide range of eLibrary services, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, eComics, and eNewspapers, providing plenty of opportunities for children to enjoy stories in different formats.

Gill enjoys a busy career as music educator, cellist, arranger, transcriber and composer. With over 20 years as a music educator including a Head of Strings post and Senior Teacher of 'In Harmony Lambeth' Gill loves to share her passion for music and tailors the learning journey to her student's interests and needs. She has 100% pass rate entering instrumental exams (usually with merit and distinction mark). However, the most important aspect is to enjoy playing well with ease and comfort, and set forth on the amazing journey that is music! Gill loves to work with students to find their personal creative voice and play with freedom and expression.
Gill founded and leads cello ensemble 'Vivacelli', recently transcribed the commercial album Thrive for RIOPY and is a published composer. She currently teaches at Nonsuch School, Sutton and Halliford School, Shepperton. Although classically trained she has always enjoyed dipping into different styles such as folk and jazz music and exploring improvisation.

We have been celebrating Biology Week. This is a national celebration of all things relating to the biosciences. Our Year 7 and 8 students have been attending lunchtime sessions throughout the week, including using microscopes to study moss, making bioplastics from potato starch and making mini beehives. Students in all year groups have been looking at women in science, and careers relating to biosciences in their form times this week. 10EY went one step further by also making play dough models of cells as part of their Wellbeing Wednesday activity. Our Year 13 prefects designed some fantastic activities to get students thinking about where Biology could take them and the wonderful discoveries of female scientists in the past. They also produced posters and a form PowerPoint presentation to advertise the week and supported in the lunchtime sessions. Thank you Bethany H 13H, Naomi C 13D, Emily P 13G, Zainab M 13D and Abeer S 13D for all your work in making Biology Week 2024 such a success.
Mrs Macgregor - Head of Biology
On Wednesday we travelled to Reigate Grammar School to take part in the EESA Cross Country. The girls were a little nervous when we arrived and saw how many schools were taking part and the level of competition they would be facing. However, after a walk through of the course route their nerves seemed to settle. The junior girls team took part first, and at this point it was evident just how muddy and slippery the course was. Despite this, the pace was fast and this was maintained throughout. Our girls took to their race plan and kept their pace. At the finishing line it was clear to see the effort and intensity the girls had run with, and I thank them for putting themselves through it for Rosebery! Mimi B 8MY and Francesca A 8EY were our top finishers. We will know the official results in due course.
The intermediate girls ran next, and after hearing about the bogginess of the course, were a little apprehensive at the start line. But Darci V-R 9MY started off with great pace and maintained this throughout, followed closely by Fiona W 9CY. The others were not far behind, and Aaliyah-Zaina R 10EY overtook quite a few runners in the final lap. Darci and Fiona held their positions and finished in the top runners from Rosebery, with Darci being our most successful finisher of the day.
A huge congratulations to all that took part - you represented Rosebery in a joyful manner and it was a delight to take you. Bring on the next one at Nonsuch!
Mrs Hart McKee - PE Teacher
The Year 7 Netball Team delivered an outstanding performance against Blenheim School, securing a decisive victory with a final score of 5-3. From the first whistle, the team showcased excellent teamwork and communication skills, with Ellie M 7PY leading the charge by scoring early goals. The defence, anchored by India S 7MY, consistently intercepted passes and denied the opposition clear chances at scoring, while Sophia C and Dolsie S 7PY excelled in the centre, creating numerous scoring opportunities. The team’s determination shone through, especially in the final quarter, where they pulled ahead with three quick goals to secure their win.
In another thrilling match, the Year 8 Netball Team triumphed over Blenheim with a final score of 20-0. The players demonstrated remarkable skill and strategy throughout the game, with Phoebe B 8CY opening the scoring with a stunning shot from distance. The team’s cohesive play was evident particularly in the midfield, where Caitlin H 8CY and Evie O-S 8MY created numerous attacking opportunities. The Year 8 team sealed their victory with a brilliant team goal, showcasing their depth and resilience.
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
