This Remembrance Sunday and on Armistice Day on Monday, the nation will come together to remember all those who have given their lives in conflict over the last century. In assemblies this week, I have explained to students that the focus of this year’s remembrance commemorations by the Royal British Legion is the 80th anniversary of D Day, one of the key turning points of the Second World War, an operation which was critical to the defeat of the Nazis. These commemorations are particularly moving as they will, in all likelihood, be the last anniversary at which we will be able to hear the testimony from surviving veterans, who are now almost all over 98 years old.
However, in addition to paying tribute to these remarkable and brave soldiers, I have also highlighted to our students the vital contribution of women to the success of D Day, and particularly women who were based at Bletchley Park, working in shifts to ensure that throughout the day and the night German messages encrypted by the Enigma machine could be intercepted and decoded, so that German military strategy could be exposed.
These often-forgotten young women were brilliant mathematicians and problem solvers and led by the pioneering Alan Turing, their work ultimately shortened the war by a number of years, therefore saving literally thousands of lives. Despite the phenomenal contribution of these women, their contribution is often forgotten as they were unable to tell even those closest to them about what they were doing because they signed the Official Secrets Act which bound their silence for 30 years. Their parents died having no idea that their daughters gave so much and made such a difference.
So, on Monday when we pause in silence as a community just before 11am, we will remember those visible and less visible people who gave up so much so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do today. At a time when women’s rights, agency and status are at risk in some many parts of the world, we must take every opportunity to remind our young women of the great achievements of the women that came before them, and to ensure they know that it is often the quietest, the most diligent and the least unsung of women who make the greatest difference to our community.
In addition to our marking of Armistice Day next week, our Year 13 students will continue their mock exams, which they have started so admirably this week, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming parents of Year 8 students on Wednesday and of Year 9 students on Friday for our Open Mornings, when you have an opportunity to explore our school.
Have a lovely weekend.

Our first week back at Rosebery is complete! Year 7 has shown enthusiasm, determination and courage by getting back into their Rosebery routines, demonstrating just how remarkable they really are. As I walk along the corridors, I can see that Year 7 have perfect uniform, lovely mannerisms and are kind to each other, which is always a joy to see.
This week in form time, we have been discussing our first fundraising event at Rosebery for Children in Need. Each form has been busy thinking of ideas as to how we can best raise money for our dedicated charities. These include a sponsored litter pick, a kindness challenge and a sponsored step count! I look forward to all these amazing ideas being put into place next week to reveal how much money we have raised in Year 7 overall. We are also having a movie night on Friday 15 November which is now live on ParentPay to fundraise even more money for such an important cause.
As always, it is lovely to see that so many of our students have 100% attendance, and I am grateful to all of you when you are reinforcing at home the importance of attending school and being present in lessons.

It has been absolutely thrilling to welcome our Year 8 students back from half term! They have seamlessly settled back into our school routines, and I couldn't be more excited! This week has seen classes bustling with curiosity and determination — whether they were diving deep into the thoughts of great philosophers in Religious Studies, engaging in lively discussions about politics and rebellions in History, or cracking complex equations in Maths, the energy has been infectious! It has been a joy to see the focus and drive of our Year 8 students even as the autumnal days begin to grow a little darker.
Although this week was shorter, it was wonderful to see our students eagerly participating in an array of extracurricular clubs and activities. A massive thank you to all our Year 8 students for stepping up to explore new clubs and expand their skills this half term. A big congratulations goes out to our school netball team, who faced off against Cobham Free School this week and triumphed with an impressive 18-12 victory! A special ‘well done’ goes out to Phoebe B 8CY, who won the Player of the Match (more on this in the Sports section). Congratulations also goes to Pippa W 8EY for her successes in gymnastics - achieving 1st on vault, 2nd on bars and 3rd for her performance on the beam and floor.
There is lots to look forward to in the next coming weeks. As part of the events of UK Parliament Week (w/b 18 November) , the Politics Department have organised a visit by Helen Maguire, the newly elected MP for Epsom and Ewell, at Rosebery School. As Mrs Callaghan and the Politics students prepare for this event, Year 8 students have been asked to think about any questions that they would like to ask the MP ahead of this visit. Next week we will also be collecting donations for children who will be spending Christmas at Epsom Hospital. On Friday, donations will be collected on the front gate. A list of suggested donations is currently on the Year 8 Google Classroom page.
As I step into the role of Acting Head of Year 8, I couldn't be more excited to embark on this journey with each and every one of you! I'm looking forward to all the wonderful events we have lined up, and I can't wait to hear about the incredible successes our Year 8 students will achieve both in and out of the classroom. I will be joined by Mrs Waple, who will be assisting as the Deputy Head of Year, and can’t wait to get more acquainted with the year group.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a delightful and restful weekend!

Our truncated first week back is complete, and Year 9 have been getting back into the routines of school life well. This week, we have had some lovely work in lessons, and some contributions to the wider community as well, with 9CY partaking in our litter picking initiative each day during lunch. It is always a great pleasure to see our students showing their respect for the environment and for the community.
Year 9 have had a strong start to the half term, and we would like to ensure that this continues in the long run. Please continue to have conversations with your daughter about the daily standards that they set, including their punctuality and uniform. Just a reminder that any and all nose piercings are prohibited, as with any other jewellery (except one stud ear piercing in each ear).
Finally, I'd like to extend a special congratulations to Bella P and Kate S 9MX, as well as Hannah S 7MX for their recent performance in the Stars of Tomorrow dance competition where they represented their dance company. Not only is this a massive milestone, but they also walked away with a combined total of five 1st places, three 2nd places, seven 3rd places and four 4th places across a variety of disciplines/styles in solos, duets and group dances. The sheer amount of awards here shows such a phenomenal talent among the three of you, and I am so proud that our student’s personal successes in their passions are continually recognised. Very well done girls and keep up the great work!
Stars of the week will return next week. Have a lovely weekend!
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 9
Ms Cooke - Deputy Head of Year 9
We continue to be proud of Year 10 and their attitude and application to studies. This week alone, Year 10 received 274 merits for excellent effort in lessons, as many more merits overall. During our student voice last half term, it was lovely to hear how positively Year 10 have started, which is certainly reflected by the positive comments I have received from teachers. Students are feeling the difference in workload though, with a stress on more homework. As a year team, we are experiencing more demerits for homework than any other category and something that we would like your support with. Please have those important conversations with your child, support them in making sure their school bag is packed and correct as well as monitoring Bromcom and the MCAS app. If you do have any technical issues with the apps, please let us know.
I include the link again to our school website HERE, where you can see the exam boards for each subject under ‘Subject Codes 2024-25'.
This week we spent time in our assembling reflecting on Remembrance day, which we will mark as a school on Monday and look ahead to celebrating anti-bullying week, where the them this year is ‘Respect’.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Year 11 have returned back to school in an increasingly mature, focused and determined state of mind ahead of the mock exams that begin on Monday 18 November. Thank you to everyone who has supported a Year 11 student by helping them to organise their revision, directing them to the resources made by teachers, and ensuring that they take useful and timely breaks.
A separate letter has been issued to all parents and carers this week with links to the mock timetable and to all the study resources that departments have shared with students. We would be very grateful if you could read this for your own information about what exams are happening when. Once students are in school, we will continue support with organisation, to build confidence and resilience, and to try to alleviate feelings of anxiety. Ultimately, it is important to stress that these are mock exams – a practical insight into the experience of the public exams next summer, and a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their progress so far.
Finally, each week we like to recognise how our students make us proud. This week's Rosebery Remarkable students are Mia C and Katie C 11PY, who shared some valuable and important contributions to our PDC topic, which this half term focuses on building a toolkit for positive wellbeing. Thank you so much!

Our Year 11 Geographers had a wonderful time in Italy exploring the sites, sounds and tastes of the beautiful Sorrento coast. We arrived early on Thursday morning and explored the vibrant city of Naples before heading underground to learn more about the network of caves which have been used both as aqueducts and bomb shelters during WW2. We sampled some pizza before travelling to Sorrento, which would be our base for the next five days.
On our second day, we trekked through The Valley of Hell (a wonderful tour through the historic lava flows between Mount Vesuvius and Mount Somma) before climbing to the summit of Mount Vesuvius, where we marvelled at the crater of this iconic volcano. That evening, we made our own pizzas and then enjoyed a feast of delicious Italian cuisine.
Our third day saw us exploring the beautiful Amalfi Coast, stopping at the villages of Positano and Amalfi for plenty of photos, before taking our own boat along the coast to Salerno so that we could enjoy the coastline from a different perspective. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal at the end of the day while enjoying some live entertainment whilst overlooking the Bay of Naples.
Our penultimate day took us to the ancient city of Pompeii, where our tour guides walked us through the streets of this UNESCO site to see Roman houses, the forum, amphitheatre and shops destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD. We even got to see some of the current excavations which were unbelievable! To conclude our stay, we enjoyed a final few hours of souvenir shopping and tasted the local gelato before the long-awaited results of the scavenger hunt.
Our Geographers were superb throughout and made memories to last a lifetime! Thank you for being such wonderful Rosebery students!
Mrs Burge - Head of Geography
It was a delight to take 16 of our Sixth Form students out to New York and Washington over half term in our first (and not last) History and Politics curriculum trip. We managed to cram an awful lot in to the trip, including seeing the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, Central Park, the Empire State Building and, in Washington, we were fortunate enough to have an expert guide to take us to the famous memorials, visit Congress (including getting into the House of Representatives) and to also visit 3 wonderful Smithsonian Museums. We also met a renowned Civil Rights author at a book reading and we even managed to attend Kamala Harris's final pre-election rally in central Washington.
I would like to extend my thanks to teachers, support staff, parents and of course our wonderfully enthusiastic students for making this trip such a success. We are looking to repeat this trip in October 2026. So, to all our Year 10 and Year 11 would-be A Level students, come and have a chat with us if you want to know more or take a look at our X account for more information @Roseberyhistory.

In a closely contested Year 9 netball match, our team fought hard but ultimately lost 19-16. Despite strong defensive efforts from both our defenders and centre court players, we struggled to convert possession into goals. There were some great moments of teamwork and skill, with standout performances from Fearne L 9EX, Emma B 9EY and Abi L 9EY, who worked tirelessly to create opportunities for their fellow players. However, a few missed shots and turnovers at crucial moments allowed the opposition to pull ahead. While they were disappointed with the result, the team showed great determination and resilience, and we’ll be looking to build on the positives for the next game.
Cobham Free School voted Abi L as their Attacking Player of the Match and Erica F 9CX as their Defensive Player of the Match. The Coach's Player of the Match went to Bea T 9MY for her consistent defensive marking and interceptions within the game. Well done girls, what a brilliant match.
