There has been a lovely celebratory mood at Rosebery this week, as we not only joined in marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, but also marked Rosebery Day on Wednesday.
The Quad was resplendent in sunshine as the Senior Prefect Team hosted a Rosebery Day picnic, which included lawn games and in house music from some very talented students.
This was the 98th Rosebery Day, as the new ‘Rosebery School’ was officially opened on 7 May 1927, coinciding with Lord Rosebery’s birthday, by the Lady Mayoress of London - marking the birth of Rosebery School.
The new White Horse drive site was built on land donated to the local authority by Lord Rosebery to construct the new school, to expand the capacity to educate girls in the local area. The primrose flower logo used by Rosebery School is also a direct reference to the 5th Earl of Rosebery, Archibald Philip Primrose, whose family name is "Primrose".
You can find out more about the history of Rosebery, as we prepare to mark the centenary of the creation of the ‘new’ Rosebery School in 1927 by clicking here.
Aside from the naming of Rosebery Park, and several Rosebery Roads in the local area you may also be aware that Rosebery House at Epsom College was also named after the former Home Secretary, Prime Minister, and winner of the Epsom Derby! You may wish to read more about him here or indeed enjoy doing you own research!
Elsewhere this week, good luck to Year 11 students who have now started their GCSEs, and we bid farewell to our Year 13 Class of 2025, who had their final lessons today, ahead of their A Level examinations starting next week – for many it’s the beginning of the end of an emotional but joyous 7 year Rosebery journey – BEST OF LUCK GIRLS!
Next week is a busy one for Year 10 students, with Geography field work taking place at the River Tillingbourne and I know colleagues were incredibly impressed with the students throughout the GCSE & Mock Exam preparation day that took place on Thursday. As this cohort take over as the oldest students in kilts, we look forward to them rising to the challenges in front of them, and also look forward to meeting Year 10 families at Parents’ Evening on Thursday.
Please be aware that there are number of timetable changes taking place from Monday, that we will speak to your daughters about, largely to support the PE curriculum offer, in light of recent events. In the first instance existing staff are taking on extra classes, to benefit the student experience, for which I am truly grateful, and we then hope to have a new permanent member of team PE in place for after May half term. Apologies in advance for any disruption in the interim, but please do encourage your daughter to check Bromcom or ePraise over the weekend.
Finally, it is the next GLF Collaborates session on Wednesday afternoon, so please be reminded that school closes early that day, with students dismissed at 1.00pm. Please note that this means that there will be no lunch time canteen service on Wednesday.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
In the midst of a very challenging year for all those at Rosebery, it seems the right time to start up a parents' prayer group as a way of offering support to the school community. If you would be interested in gathering once a term with other Christian parents to pray for our school, please fill in this Google form with some details and you'll hear from us shortly with a date to meet.

Despite the week being shorter, Year 7 have managed to have an incredibly action-packed week. One highlight of this week was celebrating Rosebery Day on Wednesday, where all students had an extended lunch break to enjoy some outstanding live music from our talented students, shared a picnic together, and got involved in some obstacle races and lawn games. It was lovely to see the school community gather together to celebrate Rosebery’s history and share the Rosebery spirit.
Year 7 have been continuing with their STEM-ettes project in form time on Tuesday and, this week, they have been focusing on creating profiles of inspiring Women in Science in preparation for presentations in form in a couple of weeks time. It has been lovely to see Year 7 engaging with STEM-ettes so enthusiastically and being inspired that Science really is for everyone. Don’t forget to check your ePraise to see if you have earned an accolade for STEM-ettes this half-term from your tutors.
A huge congratulations to Amy M 7CY for her solo-singing performance of 'How Far I’ll Go' from Moana, which she sung in front of a live audience at the West End Theatre Phoenix Arts Club last week as part of the 'Kids Takeover the Stage' talent show, as well as performing in the finale group number of 'You Will be Found' from Dear Evan Hansen. Keep singing Amy! #Remarkable #Proud. Don’t forget to let us know of all the incredible things that Year 7 students are doing outside of school so that we can celebrate their Remarkable and Proud.

As ever, a lot has been happening this week for Year 9. We’ve had Rosebery Day, on which it was lovely to see so many students enthused about celebrating the school as a community; we’ve had students preparing for graduation during form time (more on that later!); as well as the culmination of our options process, which has been a true delight as I referenced last week.
The undoubted highlight of the week for me though, was attending both GCSE Music classes concerts on Wednesday and Thursday evening. I am always filled with awe when this year group get a chance to showcase their talents, and I was absolutely fascinated with the levels of talent, but also the clear dedication and effort that has gone in to honing this over the years. I’m pleased to have heard fantastic singers, pianists, guitarists, drummers, trumpeters, oboists and celloists; I hope all who attended enjoyed this as much as I did. What a privilege it is that there are too many individuals to mention by name that are so talented. We are so proud of the hard work you put in for your performance (even if it was nerve-wracking) and you are all our Stars of the Week this week!
Over the next couple of weeks there are many things upcoming. Next week, we have the district athletics for year 9 on Thursday, and I am also lucky enough to get to take Year 9 to the Starburst Cricket Festival on Thursday too! Following that, we build to our Key Stage 3 Graduation the following week. Just a reminder, Year 9 will be off-timetable for the day, partaking in a series of activities to celebrate their transition into Key Stage 4. It's shaping up to be lots of fun and I am excited to see Year 9 throw themselves into the day!
Have a great weekend!

As predicted, it has been a very busy (yet shorter) week, which hasn’t stopped everyone ending the week in high spirits. Rosebery Day on Wednesday was a joy to see - everyone smiling and cheering on students and staff who took part in the activities, while singing along to the joyous and talented Year 10 musicians in the quad. Rosebery really is a special community to be part of.
Year 10's main event this week was the ‘Ready for Mocks’ Immersion Day, held yesterday. The day included sessions on revision skills, time to set personal targets, and a chance to reflect on recent report data. Students also reviewed key topics that will appear in their English, Maths, and Science exams, and explored different revision techniques. In addition, students were reminded of the importance of wellbeing. Taking time out and maintaining a healthy balance between study and self-care is essential during the lead-up to exams.
Next week is National Mental Health Week, where there will be a range of activities on offer for students to take part in, as well as our Skip-a-thon event on Friday 16 May (which is also a non-uniform day) where students are encouraged to wear something orange.
Finally, as Year 11 students are now officially on study leave, the focus will be on Year 10 students. Therefore, our expectations have stepped up in terms of work ethic, revision and uniform. Thank you for your support at home in ensuring that uniform is correctly worn and jewellery is kept at home. Students who do not comply with these expectations will have their social time removed until the uniform is corrected.

As you read this, Year 11 will be at the start of the GCSE exam season. While the majority already have some exams under their belt in subjects such as French, Spanish, Drama, Music, Art and DT, this marks the start of the formal exam period. Students of Drama, Business and Sociology are one paper down, and all students will now be preparing for English Literature Paper 1, which begins on Monday 12 May.
As part of preparations, Year 11 were in school on Tuesday and Wednesday for immersive Maths and English days, focusing on key reminders for the exams and fine-tuning performance on tricky elements of the paper. Their behaviour over these two days was exemplary, and testament to just how far they have come.
Throughout the exam season, form tutors, Mr Hewett and I will be here to support with whatever students may need. All the reminders about logistics, timings, equipment and more have been addressed in Assembly and form time, sent to students via email, uploaded to Google Classroom and sent to you at home – so we hope that everyone will have got the message somehow!
We also appreciate that this might be a stressful time for you, so we want to remind you, as families, to hang in there! Your support in ensuring students are eating, drinking and sleeping enough is invaluable. You can also support by ensuring they have all their equipment, as the rules on lending spares are stricter not that these are ‘the real thing’.
We can’t say this enough: we are so proud of the Class of 2025, and we have lots of exciting things planned to celebrate when they finally overcome this big educational milestone.

As part of Melanoma Awareness Month, we will be holding a sponsored Skip-a-thon on Friday 16 May in memory of Natalie Street, a former Rosebery student. The event will raise funds for the Royal Marsden Hospital, which provided exceptional care to Natalie and her family.
Year 7 and Year 12 students will participate during lesson time.
All other students and staff are welcome to join in during lunchtime.
This is a sponsored event and students who wish to take part are encouraged to collect sponsorship. Sponsorship forms are available from school – students can speak to Miss Canessa if they need one.
All donations and sponsorship money should be brought into school on Thursday 15 or Friday 16 May. If you wish to make any additional donations, this can be done on ParentPay.
In support of the event, Friday 16 May will also be a non-uniform (mufti) day, with a suggested donation of £1. We encourage all students and staff to wear orange to show support for Melanoma Awareness Month.
Thank you for your continued support of these important and meaningful school events.

A number of year 12 physics students recently competed in the Senior Physics Challenge, organised by the British Physics Olympiad. It is an exciting opportunity for students to stretch their problem solving skills and apply fundamental physical principles to novel situations. Over 6000 top students take part in the competition each year, which is designed to stretch high level students with more advanced styles of questions than they would normally be used to.
Brilliantly, all students who participated this year earned an award. Special congratulations to Emma G 12B for receiving a Gold award, which in this competition is truly a remarkable achievement only earned by 7% of those who took part! Silver awards went to Freya D 12E, Marta N 12B and Elena E 12B, and Bronze awards to Lauren L 12B, Olivia T 12B, and Bethan T 12B. Thank you and well done to everyone who participated!

All Year 7 students will take part in a fun one-hour chess workshop during the school day on Thursday 15 May.
This special session is run by a charity called ‘Chess in Schools and Communities’, and it’s a great chance for your child to:
Learn how to play chess
Improve their skills if they already know how to play
Why chess?
Chess is a fantastic game that helps students:
Think carefully and solve problems
Be patient and plan ahead
Focus and stay calm
Show good sportsmanship and teamwork
It’s a great way for students to build confidence while having fun in a relaxed, friendly setting. It doesn’t matter if your daughter has never played chess before or already loves it—we’re sure she will enjoy this exciting and educational session!

The Year 12 netballers played against Ashcombe School on Wednesday afternoon in the beautiful sunshine - which felt very weird for a netball game! Both teams started the game very competitively and I was excited to see how the game would unfold. From the first centre pass, Rosebery scored, which put us in a strong positive position for the remainder of the quarter. The ball was being played down the court quickly by both teams and the quality of the passing resulted in some great feeds into the D, as well as a high-scoring quarter of 9-5 to Rosebery.
As the second quarter began, Rosebery made a few unforced errors and the scoreline remained a lot tighter compared the to the first quarter, finishing the half with a score of 14-8 to Rosebery. The second half started much better, as Rosebery steadied the play and made some brilliant interceptions which turned the ball over into many goal-scoring opportunities. By the end of the third quarter, Rosebery were in the lead with a score of 20-11. As the final quarter started, you could tell that both teams were getting tired as the number of penalties given away were increasing as well as the number of unforced errors. However, Rosebery still managed to win the quarter and the whole game with a final score of 26-12. Well done on a winning end to the season, and a particular well done to Keira K 12G, who received Player of the Match from the opposition.

RELATE have developed AI self-help tools aimed at supporting separated parents, co-parents, couples and carers to communicate more effectively, see things from the child’s perspective, and stop unnecessary arguments before they happen. The tools are designed to empower families to make informed decisions and maintain positive relationships for the wellbeing of their children.
One tool – the sounding-board bot - acts as a supportive sounding-board for messages exchanged with an ex or current partner. It analyses language to suggest clearer, more empathetic wording, thus reducing the risk of miscommunication and conflict.
Another tool called ‘in-the-middle-bot’, offers valuable insights into a child's perspective across various co-parenting scenarios, helping caregivers understand and respond to their needs more effectively.
“Often parents are thinking about things from their own perspective. The ‘in-the-middle bot’ can help parents see things through the child’s eyes, leading to informed decisions which put their child’s needs first. RELATE believe that by leveraging advanced technology, they can provide co-parents with the resources they need to navigate their journeys with greater ease and confidence.”
