It has been a wonderful final week of the half term, with Year 9 taking centre stage as they ‘graduate’ from the Lower School to the Upper School.
Wednesday was their Graduation Day, and there are some lovely pictures and stories you can read about in the Year 9 section of Rosebery News, but I am not sure there are many schools who can end a day with over 200 beaming Year 9 students throwing mortar boards in the air to a backdrop of smoke grenades and confetti cannons!
The day included an Escape Room activity, the Train Game, mortar board-making and some fabulous Rosebery Alumni as guest speakers. I must doff my cap to Mr Pingree and the Year 9 Team for making the day such a success.
Over 160 Year 9 students then went on to undertake their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Training Day on Thursday and are completing their Practice Expedition today. I must thank Ms Godwin for her leadership of DofE at Rosebery, as with an additional 50 Year 10 students enrolled on the Silver Award, and 20 Year 12 students on the Gold Award (for which the qualifying expedition is in Majorca this year!), we continue to offer and run one of the most successful school-based Duke of Edinburgh schemes in the country – which included some of our students receiving their Gold DofE Awards at Buckingham Palace last week, which you can read more about later in Rosebery News.
Not to be outdone, Year 8 students had a wonderful time on the annual History trip to the Somme Battlefields. Organised by Mr Chamberlain, this is such an important trip for our students to better understand the scale, significance and impact of World War One to this very day by visiting:
Vimy Memorial Park to explore the preserved trenches and assess the contributions of the Canadian Corps.
Thiepval Commonwealth memorial, which allowed students to look for the names of potential relatives on the commemorative wall and pay their respects to the fallen.
Fricourt German Cemetery, to understand how this conflict consumed young lives on all sides.
Newfoundland Park Memorial near Beaumont Hamel, where the Newfoundland Regiment suffered over 90% casualties on the first day of the Somme offensive.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Team PE also managed to squeeze in House Rounders for Years 7, 8 and 9, competed at District Athletics at Kingsmeadow Stadium, and took the U15 Cricket Team to the Starburst Cricket Festival – please do check out the Sport section of Rosebery News for more on each of these stories!
It was also lovely to welcome our new Year 6 into 7 families to Rosebery for their Transition Information Evening earlier in the week - I am always so grateful for the kind words you all have to say about the school within the Epsom community, which helps keep us such a well-regarded and popular school. I must also give special thanks to the PSA for their fundraising and positivity at all such events, and to Mrs Wild, for running the PSA's Pre-Loved Uniform Shop. Together they raised over £2,500 pounds on Tuesday evening! In increasingly austere times, given public finances, and with schools facing imminent pressure to make cuts and find efficiency savings for September, the funding and support from the PSA and from you (our families) is invaluable and makes a huge difference to continue to offer a distinctive and joyful educational experience for our girls.
As we look forward to the final half term of the academic year, I must say goodbye to Mrs Harper and wish her well as she starts her maternity leave after the break, and we are also bidding farewell to Mr Storey in History, and Miss Basit, who was one of our Cover Supervisors, as they both pursue new opportunities.
However, we look forward to welcoming back Mrs Ringer and Mrs Keoshgerian after half term, who are both returning from maternity leave, and we are delighted to introduce Miss Dawson, who is joining Rosebery as a Teacher of PE on a permanent basis and will also take over from Mrs Harper as Form Tutor for 7MY.
Finally, as you may be aware, by mutual agreement, Julian Drinkall stepped down from his role as Chief Executive Officer of GLF Schools on Wednesday. The Board of Trustees has appointed James Nicholson as interim CEO.
A letter from Lynne O’Reilly, Chair of the Board of Trustees for GLF Schools, to all GLF families can be accessed via the link below:
Letter from Lynne O’Reilly – GLF Schools, May 2025
Have a lovely half-term break everyone.

We have been made aware by the Blackout Team of some issues relating to recent App updates that may be affecting users at all schools. Could we therefore ask that your daughter uninstalls and re-installs the Blackout App over half-term, to ensure that she has the latest and safest version of the App running.
Please be reminded, that all students in Years 7, 8, and 9 are expected to have the Blackout App installed and enabled if they wish to bring their phone to school with them and avoid having their phone confiscated if they are found to be using their device in school, without the App installed. With much greater uptake in usage at other GLF schools, and with several other schools now looking to adopt and roll out Blackout, we do not wish our standards to drop, and we know without it, many of our students still find the temptation to use their camera, check social media updates, or respond to notifications a significant distraction during the school day.
We have been informed by Surrey Police of some incidents in our community over the last month that have raised concerns regarding the safety of young people. These have been reports where a stranger has approached a young person and either offered them a lift or attempted to engage with them.
Surrey Police is investigating potential links between these incidents and all lines of enquiry are being followed. Officers will also be carrying out extra patrols in the area at drop-off and pick-up times.
The safety and well-being of our students is of utmost importance to us. In light of these events, we would ask that you remind your children of the following safety measures when travelling to and from school:
Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions such as mobile phones or headphones.
Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, walk or cycle with friends or in groups.
Avoid Strangers: Never accept rides or gifts from strangers and keep a safe distance from unknown individuals.
Safe Routes: Stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.
Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and move to a safe place.
In the event of an emergency or if your child witnesses any suspicious activity, please report it immediately by calling 999. For non-emergencies, you can contact 101 or encourage your child to speak to a trusted adult, such as a member of school staff.
Thank you for your vigilance and support in this matter.

New Year 7: SEN Pre-Transition Mixer Workshops
We are so proud of how Year 7 have maintained such effort and momentum this week, despite feeling tired and ready for May half term. On Monday, we cheered on students in Celebration Assembly for having 100% attendance, zero de-merits, being Star of the Week, for being in the top 3 for merits for this half term, form tutor nominees, the 'Have Courage Be Kind' Award, the Reading Champion and Miss Monk’s Challenge Award. Well done to all the Year 7s who won a bubble cup and accolades on ePraise for their efforts this half term, we are so proud of you!
Well done to all the Year 7s who took part in House Rounders to earn points for your house. All the girls played their hearts out and, despite the grey skies and rain, they all had beaming smiles on their faces and played without complaining. Keep up the team spirit, Year 7! Congratulations to 7PX who won House Rounders, and to 7PY for coming in second place.
A huge round of applause to Kaida F 7CY, who travelled to Åland (a small island off of Finland) to compete in an invitational international gymnastics' competition. Kaida competed in the all-round competition, where she finished in 9th place in the Junior category out of 82 gymnasts! Kaida qualified to compete again and, in the floor final, Kaida finished 6th and was only 0.2 points off a medal. Kaida enjoyed a well-deserved banquet with teams from other countries. A huge well done to Kaida for taking part in such an incredible experience. We are so excited to see how far you will go in gymnastics. Keep up the hard work! #Remarable #Proud

What. A. Week! I’ll start at the end, with our DofE training and practice walk today. I have been very pleased to see the engagement and effort shown by Year 9 on both days, with Miss Godwin even saying the focus within this cohort has been the strongest for years! At the time of writing, Year 9 have just set off on their walk and I’m looking forward to hearing about their expedition later this afternoon when they return!
With another time shift, I’ll go back to Monday and to House Rounders. As ever, it is always a great experience to see our forms working as a team, and Monday was no different!. Even more wonderful was the accompanying sunny weather that held out right until the end of the day. Congratulations to 9MY for their winning performance and extending their streak of sporting victories in House competitions!
The biggest and most important part of the week though, was our Key Stage 3 Graduation on Wednesday. What a wonderful day this was, filled with joy, with Year 9 partaking in their escape room to earn their KS3 diploma, a session where they created their own mortarboards to capture our iconic cap throw shot, and hearing from Rosebery alumni who came to talk about their careers and the amazing things they’ve achieved since leaving Rosebery. Year 9 threw themselves into everything in the day and I loved seeing the teamwork, brilliant creativity and thoughtful questions that Year 9 asked our guest speakers. We even rewarded 24 students with our special 'graduation heroes' prizes!
I hope students all came home and told you that they had just as much fun as Ms Cooke and me. What a fitting way to celebrate progressing into the upper school. I hope Year 9 are able to have a restful break before coming back to finish the final half term of the year on a high note!

It has felt like a very long but very enjoyable week, celebrating the many successes of our students in Year 10. Our celebration assembly was filled with ePraise points and some goodie bags for those who have 100% attendance and zero demerits for the year.
Mock timetables are now available, concluding a busy half term with assessment preparations in lessons, our immersive off-timetable day of revision strategies, as well as Parents’ Evening last week. I continue to be so impressed with Year 10’s attitude towards their mock exams, and will continue to prepare them in the few weeks following our half term break.
Last week, the GLF Schools’ Foundation cricket team (featuring Eve A 10CX and Erin A 10EX), faced the Lords and Commons team at Blackheath Cricket Club. Captained by Lord O’Shaughnessy, a valued supporter of the Foundation, GLF scored an impressive 181 from twenty overs. In response, the Lords and Commons team reached 121, securing a well-deserved win for GLF. Well done team!
The top 30 songs of the hotly contested Song Academy 'Young Songwriter 2025' competition (now in its 15th year) have now been revealed. This year’s competition attracted around 1000 high quality entries from aspiring young songwriters aged between 8 and 22 across the world, including both experienced young songwriters and those who’ve written their first song. We are delighted to share that Merryn H 10CX has made it to the top 30 and we are all very proud of her – well done Merryn!
A couple of weeks ago Tila F 10CY travelled to Åland (a small island off of Finland) to compete in an invitational international gymnastics competition. She competed in the all-round competition, where she finished 2nd in the Junior FIG category and also qualified for every apparatus final (vault, bars, beam and floor) on the Sunday! This is the first time Tila had competed at a competition where they could qualify for event finals, so this was unknown territory and to qualify for all 4 finals was a complete shock to her - but testament to her hard work and ability. Tila relished the opportunity and gained a bronze medal in the bars final, placed 5th on floor, 5th on vault and 6th on beam. Well done Tila!
Finally, please ensure that Year 10 students find a healthy balance between revision and looking after their own wellbeing during half term. Students have also been reminded that they need a fully-equipped clear pencil case for their exams, including a calculator and spare blue/black biros.

The GCSE exams continue apace, and students are doing incredibly well to juggle all their subjects while remaining calm and prepared. Each morning, the Quad is full of students exchanging last minute reminders, exam technique tips and testing each other, all supported by their teachers (see Mrs Miller, with her whiteboard below!). It is a joy to see.
Now, at half term, there is a moment to pause, with students having completed all the exams for particular subjects – including English Literature, Sociology, Business, Media, Computer Science and RS. With fewer subjects and a week of no exams, I hope they will be able to approach their revision with greater calm and focus on the exams that remain.
Thank you to everyone who has already sent in uniform for our pre-loved uniform sale - all donations are gratefully received. If you would still like to donate, please label items for the attention of Amanda Wild. Students may wish to retain one white shirt for Leavers’ Day, where they can collect the signatures and messages of good luck – but they will otherwise be in their own clothes.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all parents and carers for your incredible support in our recent skip-a-thon, held on Friday 16 May. The event was a huge success, with students showing fantastic enthusiasm and energy as they skipped through their designated lessons—with many dressed in orange mufti to help raise awareness for melanoma.
A special thank you goes to Year 7 and Year 12, who went above and beyond in gathering sponsorships. Thanks to the generosity of our school community, including donations made via ParentPay, we are proud to announce that we raised a total of £3,171.50 in memory of our former student, Natalie Street.
Natalie’s mum (pictured) was deeply moved by the support, and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to honour Natalie’s memory in such a meaningful way. We also hope the event served as an important reminder to our students about the importance of sun safety.
Thank you once again for all your donations!

A huge congratulations to Lexie D 13I and ex-pupil Tilly Anderson-Smith for receiving their Gold DofE Award at Buckingham Palace by Prince Edward on Monday 12 May.
In 2023, Tilly completed her Practice Expedition with her team in The Peak District in intense heat, before completing her Qualifying Expedition in The Lake District on one of the soggiest DofE expeditions in Rosebery DofE history. Tilly demonstrated fantastic leadership, resilience and determination whilst on her expedition, which brought two opposing weather extremes. Tilly brought positive energy to the expedition and was a cheerleader for other people in her team to enjoy the expedition for its highs and its lows.
In 2024, Lexie completed her Practice Expedition with her team in The Peak District and excitingly completed her Qualifying Expedition in The French Pyrenees, in which Lexie and her team were self-sufficient in remote mountain terrain for four days, reaching vertical ascent and descent of 1500m, involving 7 to 11 hours of physical endurance, navigation and camping. On the expedition, Lexie demonstrated excellent leadership skills through her positive mindset, nurturing influence and exceptional navigational skills.
Well done to Lexie and Tilly for a very well-deserved Gold DofE Celebration and Awards event at Buckingham Palace!

The U15 Cricket team delivered an outstanding performance, winning three out of four matches against strong opponents at the Starburst Cricket Festival on Thursday.
Darci V-R 9MY was a powerhouse with both bat and ball, hitting the most sixes in the tournament for Rosebery. Grace D 9CY's performance behind the stumps was nothing short of phenomenal, despite it being her first competitive cricket match. This resulted in a fantastic number of catches, helping to keep the oppositions runs to a minimum. Luella D 9CY stepped up as captain for the day and rose to the occasion with remarkable composure and tactical insight. Her on-field leadership and off-field organisation played a key role in the team’s cohesion and focus. Meanwhile, Erica F 9CX led the bowling attack, taking the most wickets for the team.
The team’s collective effort shone brightly through all four matches against the likes of Reigate, Streatham & Clapham and Woldingham. While they missed out on a clean sweep, their 3 out of 4 victories led them to 5th position (narrowly missing out on a top 3 position) - an incredible achievement for their first tournament of the season.
Miss Croft - Head of PE
What a fantastic day at the District Athletics at Kingsmeadow as our athletes delivered a series of outstanding performances across both track and field events. From the explosive sprints to the endurance of the longer races - with the grit shown in every event, the team made us incredibly proud with their determination and results.
The sprint events were a real highlight, with Fearne L 9EX, Clarice FS 9EY, Francesca B 9MY and Maisy R 9EX all producing stellar runs in the 100m and 200m races - powering through their heats and into the relay finals, in which they showcased exceptional teamwork and speed on the track. Their coordination and drive in the relay final reflected true competitive spirit and unity.
In the 300m race, Izzy C 8MY showed great strength and endurance to secure a well-earned 3rd place finish. Across the board, the team brought home positive results, personal bests, and plenty of reasons to celebrate. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines or pushing their limits on track and field events, every athlete contributed to the energy and success of the day.
Congratulations to all involved.
Miss Croft - Head of PE
This week saw the return of House Rounders, and what an event it was! Over three days, Year 7, 8 and 9 each fielded a form team that would play 7 matches over lunchtime and period 5. All form groups got to play each other so there could be no dispute on who the champions were!
On Monday, the Year 9s started the competition and they turned up with bags of energy and the loudest cheers going! The standard of play was also exceptional, with all the umpires stating at the end how impressed they were with the skills on show but also how pleasant and polite the girls were to each other. I always say that teaching Rosebery students is like nothing else as I have never known a more supportive (yet also competitive) group of girls in my career! On Tuesday, Year 8 took to the field and, despite not playing as much rounders, the girls very quickly learnt the rules and tactics and started using strategical awareness to beat the opposition! Again, there were some phenomenal hits that the fielders had no chance of stopping, but also some great one-handed catches and stumping-out over all four pitches. Once again, us teachers had a great time umpiring the games and were very pleasantly surprised!
On Wednesday, it was the final day of House Rounders, and time for Year 7 to compete! Once again, they arrived with tonnes of energy and enthusiasm, which continued despite the dark clouds and rain! It was great to see them get on with the tournament despite the weather conditions. As the tournament progressed, it was clear to see this was going to be the closest one yet! There were no clear-cut winners, and right up until the results were announced nobody knew who had won!
As much as the events were full of encouragement, support and respect, it was a competition after all and the results are just as important! So here they are:

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, our incredible team of JLT Wellbeing Ambassadors organised a variety of lunchtime activities to raise awareness and promote positive mental health. Events included jewellery-making (see picture), origami, a lively Just Dance session, and the sale of sweet treats to bring our school community together.
Thanks to the fantastic support from students and staff, we raised over £385 for the Grace Dear Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young people’s mental health.
A huge well done to our Wellbeing Ambassadors—and thank you to everyone who got involved!
