Firstly, thank you for your donations and contributions to today’s non-uniform day and for supporting the Skip-a-thon, which took place today – it really was a lovely event and raised over £2,000.
In memory of Natalie Street, a former Rosebery student, all funds raised are being donated to The Royal Marsden Hospital, which provided exceptional care to Natalie and her family. It’s not too late to donate, via Parent Pay – just select the Skip-a-thon option and enter the amount you’d like to give.
Yesterday, it was a delight to welcome Shasha Khan who ran Chess Lessons for all Year 7 students. It was wonderful to see the girls so engaged, and learning some new chess moves and tactics. I hope many of them are inspired to keep playing or perhaps start playing for the first time!
Thank you to Year 10 parents & carers for your attendance at Year 10 Parents’ Evening yesterday, there has been some hugely positive feedback for this cohort, and we are excited to see what they will be able to achieve in the year ahead. I know our Year 10 Geographers have also enjoyed some lovely weather, whilst off completing their GCSE fieldwork in and around the River Tillingbourne this week.
It was also a busy week for the PE Department, with several teams competing in athletics events throughout the week, which you can read more about in the year group sections below.
I must also thank the GLF Foundation who organised a charity cricket match for GLF students against the Lords & Commons Cricket Club. Four students from Rosebery School were invited to join the mixed team and journeyed to Blackheath Cricket Club in London – rubbing shoulders with some notable MPs and Lords yesterday afternoon. I know that Eve and Erin A in Year 10 particularly impressed the competition, especially given they are somewhat younger than some of the Lords, and I’m pleased to confirm that the GLF students came out on top – bagging a signed Rory Burns England shirt, as well as the glory!
Next week, the final week of this half term, is jam packed. We are excited to welcome our new Year 6 into 7 families to Rosebery for the first time on Tuesday, for their Transition Information Evening, and before that, we will have hosted some Year 6 students at our Small School Mixers, which some of you will remember fondly.
It’s also a crucial House Rounders tournament across Monday to Wednesday, as the race for the House Cup heats up, as well as the Year 8 Battlefields Trip on Wednesday, and Year 9 Graduation on Wednesday, which is followed by the Year 9 Bronze DofE Training Day on Thursday, ahead of their Practice Expedition on Friday.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

What another excellent week Year 7 have had. On Monday, Year 7 received an assembly from the Hive team introducing Mental Health Awareness Week, sharing important messages about why community matters, how kindness goes a long way to helping others and the avenues of support available in school. It has been lovely to see Year 7 getting involved in the wellbeing activities hosted in school this week by the Hive team, including origami and mindfulness, friendship bracelet-making, playing 'Just Dance' as well as the Wellbeing Cafe at lunchtimes.
On Thursday this week, Year 7 received an 'Introduction to Chess' workshop, in which students were taught about the rules and strategies of playing chess. Year 7 learned new skills in critical thinking and problem-solving, the art of patience and focus, and the importance of creativity during a game of chess.
The week ended excellently for Year 7, who took part in the sponsored Skip-a-thon to raise money for The Royal Marsden Hospital for Melanoma Awareness Month in memory of ex-Rosebery student Natalie, who sadly passed away from Melanoma in November 2022. It was also lovely to see so many Year 7s wearing orange in support of the charity today.
We are incredibly proud of Mia S 7PX, who has been signed for the U13 Brighton Football Academy for next season. Mia has trained so hard and played so well this year and we are really excited to see her take on this new challenge. Good luck for next season Mia, Brighton are lucky to have you on their team! #Remarkable #Proud
A huge congratulations this week goes to Aurélie G 7PX, whose poem entry to the Young Writers Creativity Awards 2025 (titled ‘To Escape?’) has been chosen to be published in a compilation of pieces. Well done Aurélie for your excellent poem, which you can read below:
To Escape?
All the noises, so loud and overwhelming:
rambunctious rabbits squeaking, pairs of guinea pigs snuffling,
colourful birds squawking and tropical fish floundering.
Potential pet proprietors pass and in they look,
such perfect pets- which one to choose?
Some fluffy, some hairless, and some scaly,
they all are unique creatures, but with different features.
The decision is so difficult, again which one pick?
Passing by, staring and pointing,
glass being tapped on, fingers being poked and prodded around,
each time you think it’s you,
They say: ‘What about that one? She is cute too!’
All I wanted was to be loved,
and to go home with a caring family,
some attention, some affection,
someone who would take me in
and love me.
As I curled up in all my bedding, something occurred to me,
I had an idea spark inside my brain:
I wish I could ESCAPE somehow,
to where they’d really see me now.
But here I am, and here I stay,
In this small cage, day by day.
I know the truth- it’s just too late,
I’m just a hamster… this is my fate!

All of the girls competed with determination in their individual events, showing both skill and great team spirit. A big well done to everyone involved – it was a truly enjoyable and successful day out!

A lot of sporting excellence is the main headline in Year 9 this week. On Tuesday and Thursday, we had students go and compete in athletics competitions. There were some stellar performances, with Fearne L, Maisy R 9EX and Francesca B 9MY all reaching the finals in both 100m and 200m sprints. These three also reached the final of the relay, along with Clarice F S 9EY. In addition, Florence F 9EX placed third overall in the 300m on Tuesday, despite this not even being her favoured event within athletics!
My personal highlight of the week, though, was being able to take Year 9 along to the Starburst Cricket Festival yesterday. Mr Bruton and I were able to take a brilliant team along for a day of cricket, and the team won 3 out of 4 of their games, placing 5th overall out of 10 schools. The standard of cricket on show was really strong across the board, and there were also some wonderful Rosebery performances within this. A special mention to Darci V-R 9MY for her exceptional batting throughout the day, to Erica F 9CX for her fearsome bowling, and to Grace D 9CY for having never played cricket before but still showing amazing reflexes as wicket keeper and for earning herself the new name ‘The Cat’ as a result! It was a true delight to be able to accompany Year 9 on this fixture, something I hope to do more of soon!
Finally, Year 9 have been preparing for Graduation next Wednesday. This week in form time, they have been going through what makes a good question to ask our guest speakers in their session on Wednesday. Again, I was lucky enough to visit form times this week where questions were being prepared, and it was lovely to see how much effort and thought was being put into questions about careers and pathways for the future. Next week is shaping up to be wonderful, and I really hope that Year 9 are excited for our celebration of KS3.
Have a great weekend!

It has been a busy and very long week for Year 10. Geographers have navigated their way through their fieldwork whilst enjoying the sunshine and, unfortunately for some, have been getting soggy socks as they found out the hard way that their wellington boots had a hole! For those that have been in school, I have been so impressed with Year 10’s efforts as I have popped into many lessons this week. The attention to detail, neatness and pride when showing me their books and worksheets, as well as holding up their mini whiteboards when answering whole class questions has filled me with pride.
Outside the classroom again, we have had some sporting achievements, food-making and music-playing. A special mention goes to Aaliyah-Zaina R 10EY, who attended the competitive Reigate Music Festival and played Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G in the piano grade 8 category and received the certificate for an outstanding performance as well as a medal. We are so proud of her achievement.
Finally, next week, students will receive their mock examination timetables, for which I will explain how everything will work in our assembly on Thursday. To support with revision, we have compiled this document with the topics and useful links to revise from that will appear in the exams. Students can also find this on Google Classroom for ease.

We are so impressed by the way that Year 11 have navigated their exams, and we couldn’t be more proud. They have arrived to each one on time, fully equipped and ready to show to the examiners just how hard they have been working. It has been a joy to see them in the Library or the Quad, sat with their revision notes, testing each other and sharing knowledge. Their confidence and calm are testament to how well their teachers have prepared them, and how hard they have worked.
Now that students are out of uniform, we would like to repeat the call for your support in donating any unwanted school uniform items that are still in good condition.Donated items will help other families in our school community and support the ongoing work of the Rosebery PSA. We are particularly grateful for donations of blazers, kilts, jumpers, and PE kit.
Students may choose to keep one white school shirt, to be worn with their own clothes, for the purpose of collecting signatures and well wishes on Leavers Day.
Please hand in any donations to Reception, marked 'FAO: Amanda Wild (Rosebery School PSA)'.

Zara C 8PX showcased incredible skill and determination over the bank holiday weekend at the International IGA (Women’s Artistic Gymnastics) competition in Jersey. Competing at Level 6 for the first time, she secured the All-Round Top Scorer Award for her category, earning a gold medal in both her floor (tumbling) and uneven bar routines. As an academy squad member of her club, Startastic Gymnastics, Zara’s achievements reflect her dedication and hard work in the sport. Despite breaking her toe earlier this year, she did exceptionally well.
On Thursday 15 May, our Year 7 students took part in a fun and educational introduction to chess, run by the charity Chess in Schools and Communities. The session aimed to introduce the basics of the game through interactive and engaging activities.
Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of mini-games, including a game focused solely on pawns, helping them to understand key concepts in a hands-on and accessible way. The atmosphere was full of enthusiasm, and it was clear that the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We are always looking for ways to broaden our students’ learning beyond the classroom, and chess is a fantastic way to develop critical thinking, patience, and strategic planning skills.
For any students who are keen to continue exploring the game, we are pleased to offer a Chess Club every Tuesday lunchtime in room M19.
All are welcome, whether complete beginners or budding grandmasters!

A message from a Year 12 Master Class student:
"I've really enjoyed the competitive application master classes this year. It started with talks from teachers very passionate about their subjects giving talks on everything from the history of maths to the importance of art. Using the successful format and expertise from staff as a group we felt able to present our own topics of interest that we are passionate about; for example climate change and Alan Turing. Thoughtful and insightful debates ensued developing further the ability to think for ourselves.
This week, Saffiyah O 12B and I presented the debate on Euthanasia, where we discussed the pros and cons of legalizing it. So far, these classes have been highly valuable in allowing us to hear varied perspectives on hot topics and have also built our communication skills further, perfect for future University applications!"

Thank you and congratulations to all Year 9 Music students in 9A/Mu1 and 9B/Mu2 for their performances last week. We enjoyed a variety of solos and small group performances and, for some of the girls, it was their first time performing to an audience. Many thanks to all of the parents and carers for coming to support us, as well as Mrs Mariner and Mr Pingree for their attendance and support.
Thank you and congratulations to the students who volunteered to perform for our first Rosebery Day event last week. We started with a song from 1948 and gradually moved through the decades, featuring songs from Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, The Cure, The Cranberries and Oasis. Unfortunately, due to lunchtime running out, we only got as far as 1994, so the other performers have been invited to perform at the outdoor Friday Live or the Summer Concert. Thanks to Mr Faunce-Brown for his help and assistance in setting up the equipment on a warm day!
Due to a clash in the calendar with the Year 13 Prom, the concert has now moved to Thursday 26 June. It will start at 6.00pm in the Main Hall for the first half, and then like last year, the second half will be held in the Quad with more music. More details and ticket information will follow.

On Tuesday, we set off to Guildford Spectrum with a group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students to compete in the ESSA Athletics Track and Field Cup. This is a big athletics event with over 20 schools competing. The structure of the day is very regimented, and students were only allowed to compete in two events and we were only allowed to field a set number of athletes per team, meaning that some of the girls were 'forced' into doing events they had never done before! However, despite this, all the girls took to the occasion really well! The sun was shining, the picnics were in full flow and the athletics skills on display were exceptional.
The standard was very high and this competition was a team event where every distance or time was converted into points, with all points equating to where the school team finishes. For this reason, we won't know where we have placed until next week. However, in terms of performances, Rosebery had some great attempts throughout the day. Machela Lynn came first in the 100m, and the Year 8 relay team finished second. Orla Upcott secured a personal best in the 800m in some very hot conditions, while Fran Brown finished second in the javelin. All the results will be sent out in due course, so I look forward to seeing how everyone got on as well as how we placed as a school.
Regardless of the result, our Rosebery girls did us proud and arrived at their events with energy and enthusiasm that could not be faulted. Several staff members told us how polite our girls were at their events, and this to us is actually more important than the results (bet you never thought a PE teacher would say that!).
Thank you so much for such a brilliant day and good luck for the rest of the athletics coming up this term!
Mrs Hart-McKee - PE Teacher
The Year 12 netballers played against Ashcombe School on Wednesday afternoon in the beautiful sunshine - which felt very weird for a netball game! Both teams started the game very competitively and I was excited to see how the game would unfold. From the first centre pass, Rosebery scored, which put us in a strong positive position for the remainder of the quarter. The ball was being played down the court quickly by both teams and the quality of the passing resulted in some great feeds into the D, as well as a high-scoring quarter of 9-5 to Rosebery.
As the second quarter began, Rosebery made a few unforced errors and the scoreline remained a lot tighter compared the to the first quarter, finishing the half with a score of 14-8 to Rosebery. The second half started much better, as Rosebery steadied the play and made some brilliant interceptions which turned the ball over into many goal-scoring opportunities. By the end of the third quarter, Rosebery were in the lead with a score of 20-11. As the final quarter started, you could tell that both teams were getting tired as the number of penalties given away were increasing as well as the number of unforced errors. However, Rosebery still managed to win the quarter and the whole game with a final score of 26-12. Well done on a winning end to the season, and a particular well done to Keira K 12G, who received Player of the Match from the opposition.
