As we approach International Women’s Day, the Rosebery community has been deeply reflecting on what #AccelerateAction truly means in our school and beyond. Our Senior Prefects and Junior Leadership Team have led the way, ensuring that every student engages with the significance of this theme - through tutor time activities, reflections, and personal pledges. Together with our staff, they have united in wearing purple and raising funds for Refuge, demonstrating our commitment to real change.
https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
Yet, while we rightly celebrate the achievements of remarkable women, it is sobering to acknowledge that, at the current pace, full global gender parity is not expected until 2158 - a staggering five generations from now. In some parts of the world, rather than progressing, women’s rights are being eroded. This reality reminds us that our work is far from over.
Yesterday, in Parliament, Jess Phillips MP read out, for the tenth consecutive year, the names of UK women killed by men in the past year. Heartbreakingly, among those names was Gemma Devonish, one of our own.
Jess Phillips reads names of UK women killed by men last year, ITV News
This stark reminder fuels our determination. Accelerating action against misogyny and violence towards women and girls is not just important - it is urgent and necessary. At Rosebery, we are not just educating young women; we are empowering them to be the leaders, change-makers, and voices of the future. Together, we will continue to challenge injustice, champion equality, and push for a world where every girl can thrive.
Let’s not wait for change. Let’s drive it.
Elsewhere this week, I must congratulate Year 11 students for completing their PPE exams, well done girls, and am hugely grateful to Year 9 families for attending Parents’ Evening yesterday evening. It was hugely well attended, and I overheard a lot of wonderful discussion and debate as to which subjects the girls plan to opt for, as they move into Year 10, as their GCSE subjects – it was lovely to hear so many of them wish they could do them all! As a ‘Heads Up’ to Year 8 families, the associated ‘Curriculum Refinement’ evening for Year 8 students and parents/carers, is due to take place on Thursday 27 March.
Blackout continues to be a topic of much debate, but I am grateful for your good humour, candour and support during this pilot. It is interesting to note that a plan to ban smart phones is schools via the so-called safer phone bill, has been watered down, and is now focussing on research and alternative solutions. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq8y7dvw9ddo
We now have over 500 students registered and using the Blackout App and, as we move forward, I’d encourage all students and families to engage fully with the pilot as we trailblaze a novel solution, that may ultimately inform future policy and practice, to the benefit of Rosebery and perhaps the sector more broadly. Certainly in our context, the ‘best of both’ approach of embracing technology, educating girls as to how to safely use and navigate smart devices and social media with school guidance and controls, limiting the attention fragmentation, fear of missing out, and addiction associated with social media, whilst allowing the girls to have their phones at school, in case of emergency and for the journey to and from school, still seems a sensible compromise and preferable to an outright ban or collecting in all devices.
I must also thank Nina, Hannah, Rosie, Alice and Kaida in Year 7 for agreeing to speak to The Times last week, for a story that they ran on Monday, and to Freya in Year 9, who spoke on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme on Tuesday morning, leading into an interview with GLF CEO, Julian Drinkall. Both are linked below:
The Times: Schools order pupils to use ‘blackout’ app to curb phone use
Freya and Julian Drinkall on the Today programme 4/3/25 (at 1:51)
As we’ve referenced so far, throughout the Spring Term, we continue to reflect on and respond to various elements that arose from all our Stakeholder Surveys. Whilst your Parent Voice was incredibly positive and supportive of the school, ‘Trust Perception’ for GLF Schools, were the lowest scoring questions – you were not clear on the role of the Trust in this school, and you were not all confident that being a part of the Trust is beneficial for pupils.
Therefore, I delighted that GLF Schools are going to make themselves available to Rosebery Parents and Carers at an onsite event on Monday 24 March. This will take place on site at Rosebery that evening, with more details and invitations to follow in due course.
Have a fabulous weekend everyone – enjoy the sunshine!

This week we marked International Women’s Day, with 2025’s theme being “For all women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” Year 7 received a poignant assembly on Monday from Ms Hunter, who spoke about the last 100 years of activism for equal rights for women. International Women’s Day is a celebration of women, but also a call to act boldly and decisively for all women and girls worldwide. We learned of the curiosity of Marie Curie, the determination of Queen Elizabeth II, the resilience of Malala Yousafzai and the courage of Emmeline Pankhurst. Students reflected on their own qualities of curiosity, determination, resilience and courage to give the message that we can all be catalysts for lasting change. To continue reflecting on International Women’s Day, Year 7 wrote appreciation notes in form time, raised money for the charity 'Refuge' by purchasing bows and sweet bags at breaktime, and took part in house-themed activities at lunchtimes. I am incredibly proud to work with such inspiring young girls in Year 7. Everyday, our students embody the values of rights, equality, and empowerment and demonstrate empathy, resilience, courage and advocacy for what is right.
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day, which encourages students to find the fun and enjoyment in reading. In form time, Year 7 shared stories of their favourite books and received a World Book Day token to swap their £1 token for a range of different books. Well done to Kayla M 7EY, Camila P 7EY, Annabelle Y 7EY, Lauren K 7PY, Amelia J 7PY, Matilda M 7PY, Carys P 7MY, Amelia S 7MY, Rin B 7MY, Amy M 7CY, Ophelia W 7CY, Kaida F 7CY, Safia B 7EX, Hannah C 7EX, Flora H 7EX, Zahrah S 7PX, Maya G 7PX, Charlotte T 7PX, Nora B 7MX, Verity H 7MX, Erin O 7MX, Vickie L 7CX, Arlia P 7CX and Jocelyn S 7CX for taking part in the World Book Day ‘Footy and Booky’ Quiz who all scored 16/20. Finally, it was delightful to see students purchasing cakes at the literacy-themed bake sale at lunchtime today.
Looking ahead, students will be commencing ‘Study Skills’ form time sessions in the week commencing Monday 17 March, in order to start learning about revision techniques, healthy study habits and organisational skills to help students start getting into a learning mindset for the summer assessments. Each day in form time, students will learn about a different study technique and have the opportunity to practice using each one. A PDF of revision techniques discussed in form time will be circulated to Year 7 parents/carers.
Finally, we are excited that House Cheer rehearsals will begin in PE lessons in a couple of weeks and look forward to seeing students work as a team in their form groups to choreograph and rehearse cheerleading routines based on the theme of 'Disney'. Good luck to all Year 7s in your preparations for House Cheer!

A big merci to 8PX, who I had the pleasure of observing in their French lesson with Miss Newman. I was really impressed with their confidence during the register routine, responding with some fantastic French phrases and showing great enthusiasm by asking their teacher "ça va?". It was wonderful to see their engagement and growing confidence in the language - keep up the great work!
A huge well done to all of Year 8 for their excellent reports! Your hard work and dedication are evident, and we are incredibly proud of you. To celebrate, we rewarded students who achieved the highest scores for effort, oracy, and reflection with a well-deserved Krispy Kreme doughnut on Monday lunchtime. It was a fantastic opportunity to congratulate them in person, hear about their experiences, and see how proud they were of their achievements. Year 8’s commitment to their learning is inspiring, and we hope it continues to motivate everyone to continue striving for excellence.

The improvement in weather has perhaps been indicative of the joyous week that has been had by Year 9 this week. On a week with much celebration of International Women’s Day and World Book Day, our students have been marking these events with some form time activities. Ms Hunter’s assembly for International Women’s Day was a particular highlight, speaking about the history of the last 100 years of activism, as well as highlighting that International Women’s Day is a celebration of women, but equally a call to arms for decisive action for all women and girls. In addition, the reflection of the namesakes for our houses (Malala, Pankhurst, Elizabeth and Curie) was a timely reminder of the impact our students are capable of, with all of our students having the potential to promote positive, permanent change.
Sticking with the celebration of those who show determination, resilience, courage and curiosity, I have had the pleasure of inviting students this week to celebrate their wonderful efforts shown by their recent reports. Each student who displayed exceptional learner qualities across the board in their recent reports were invited to come and collect a well-deserved treat for all their hard work on Thursday lunchtime. I take great pride in just how many Year 9s are consistently holding themselves to the highest standard, and I am so glad to be able to recognise each of these individually for their efforts. A very well done to you all!
Equally as exciting this week was our Parents’ Evening on Thursday. This would mark the first time that a Parents Evening had been held on-site for this cohort, and this felt so pertinent given the choices Year 9 will be committing to later on this year. It was lovely to speak to so many of you about the progress of your daughters and I am thrilled that there were so many positive conversations that heaped praise upon the efforts of Year 9.
Finally, I’d like to extend a huge congratulations to Rachael H 9PX. Rachael has been selected for this year's U15 ENTP (England National Team) Girls Ice Hockey Team, and will be going to Lithuania in May to compete with her team. Not only is your commitment to your passion incredible, but to represent your country is truly amazing, and we couldn’t be prouder of the effort and dedication you have shown to achieve this. What an amazing feat that I cannot wait to hear more about as you continue on!

It has been another busy and exciting week for Year 10 who continue to put everything into their lessons, which has been particularly evident in the English and Drama lessons I have been to see this week. One way that you can start to have an understanding of how lessons are structured and what happens in a typical Maths, Geography, English or other lesson, is by coming along to our ‘Evening in the Life of a Year 10 Student’ on 25 March from 5.30pm. Comments from parents/carers last year highlight how useful this event was for them (please see the attached poster). Please ensure you RSVP using this link so you don’t miss out.
On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day, not by dressing up as our favourite characters, but by sharing who our favourite fictional characters are and why we enjoy reading. It is sad to hear that, nationally, our love of reading has declined. For Year 10, it is important to keep reading to improve their skills as well as sparking their imagination when it comes to the GCSE exams they will be sitting next year.
This week we also marked International Women’s Day, with 2025’s theme being “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” Ms Hunter delivered our assembly, where she spoke about the last 100 years of activism for equal rights for women because International Women’s Day is not only a celebration of women, but also a call to act boldly and decisively for all women and girls. This fits in well with our Brave Awards, which students are more forthcoming with in form time now as their confidence grows.
Finally, as the weather continues to improve, thank you for your support in ensuring blazers are on if coats are not worn, school shoes are correct, and only one pair of studded earrings is being worn.

They have done it! Year 11 have made it through two rounds of mock exams (plus a set in Year 10) and we could not be prouder of how they have approached this mammoth task. Our motto is ‘Achievement, Belonging, Resilience’ and never has this been more evident than in times when our students have faced a challenging fortnight of tests.
While we know that mocks are not anyone’s favourite time of year, we have seen first hand how useful they have been in preparing our students mentally and emotionally for the rigour of exam season. When they completed mocks in this way in Year 10, they were full of questions about having the right equipment, knowing where to sit, and whether they could take in a water bottle. Now, they are pros, and when the final exams roll around in the Summer, the minutiae of exams will feel somewhat routine, despite the inevitable nerves.
Year 11 were thankfully able to enjoy an afternoon off in the sunshine on Wednesday but were back to lessons on Thursday. We appreciate that some will have had something to say to you at home about the relentless pace of the year, but we make no apology for holding them to high expectations, after they have shown us time and again that they are more than capable of stepping up. With not long to go until we wish them well for their study leave, it is vital that we use every moment of lesson time to learn, upskill and consolidate to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, our high expectations for Year 11 do extend to their presentation in school, and we would be grateful for your support in ensuring that students adhere to the uniform policy. Students must have a blazer and school shoes; hair and make-up (including nails) should be natural; and jewellery should be left at home. In addition, the biggest cause of demerits in Year 11 is lateness and therefore we would appreciate your support in encouraging your daughter to be punctual. As we said before, it’s crunch time now – every second counts.
Finally, it goes without saying that every student in Year 11 has been truly remarkable this week – and that we are so proud of them! However, we would like to share the initiative started by Jess B 11CY, Mia L 11PY and Amy H 11PY, who donated books to Epsom Children’s Ward this week, a lovely way to celebrate World Book Day. They are certainly deserving of our Rosebery Remarkable accolade this week!

Are you able to offer a one-week work experience opportunity to one of our Year 10 or Year 12 students to put their classroom learning into practice in a specific industry sector to build on their employability skills?
Offering work experience opportunities to young people enables employers to access a wide range of talents, benefit from the unique skills and insights young people bring and with them, as well as to provide opportunities for existing staff to supervise and mentor a young person, helping to develop their management skills.
Creating work experience opportunities for students will be an excellent opportunity to showcase your company’s corporate social responsibility, by giving back to society and helping the future economy by doing your bit in helping prepare young people for the world of work.
The dates our students go out on placement will be from Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July 2025 for Year 10, and Monday 14 to Friday 18 July 2025 for Year 12. Employers must hold Employers Liability Insurance. For more information, please contact Mrs Keaveney at fkeaveney@roseberyschool.co.uk

We are thrilled to update you on the progress of our school’s chess team, which has been working hard under the guidance of Mr. Croudace. The chess club meets weekly for practice and training, providing students with the opportunity to sharpen their skills and develop their game strategies.
Next Wednesday 12 March, our team will be competing in the GLF Boundless Festival Chess Competition, where they will face off against other GLF secondary schools. This is an exciting event, and we are confident that our students will showcase the skills they have honed during their sessions.
To help prepare for this competition, we were fortunate enough to have an external coach, Mr Adam Durrant, who previously represented England as well as the counties of Surrey and Berkshire, join us for two after-school sessions. Mr Durrant has worked closely with Mr. Croudace to help further develop the team’s abilities, and we’re grateful for his expert support.
We wish the participating students the best of luck, as well as Mr. Croudace and Miss Jones who will be accompanying and cheering on the team. Good luck!

Year 7 and 8 girls travelled to Notre Dame School on Tuesday afternoon for a very sunny hockey fixture! We got there early and warmed up by firing lots of shots at our fully-padded goalkeepers and were excited to start the two games. As the games kicked off, it was clear to see that Rosebery were a little tentative at the start of the fixture, but within ten minutes they had gained in confidence and were passing the ball nicely up the pitch.
On Pitch A, we created plenty of scoring opportunities, but the outstanding performance of the Notre Dame goalkeeper kept us from finding the net. A similar story unfolded on Pitch B, where our final touches in the D lacked the power needed to break through the opposition’s defence. Heading into the second half, we made a goalkeeper switch and encouraged the girls to move the ball more quickly from stoppages to catch the opposition off guard. Both teams responded well, increasing the intensity of their attacking play in the D. However, Notre Dame capitalized on their chances more effectively, securing victories in both matches. Despite the results, the girls showcased impressive skill and determination throughout, making it a pleasure to watch. Well done to all!
