In and amongst a wonderful week at Rosebery, and during some wonderful weather, I have promised to hold the front page for Mrs Hart McKee and our wonderful Squash Team:
Last Wednesday was the final round of the Girls KS3 Championships of the National Schools Squash Finals. Just to get to this round meant that Rosebery were in the top 8 schools in the country, which was a phenomenal achievement in itself! The girls travelled to Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham and were very excited (and nervous) to play the best of the best in this final round. The first school we were up against was Gosforth Academy and, from watching them in the warm up, their players looked powerful and skillful. Our girls got on court and experienced some very tough matches. Cali B 9CX, Hazel P 9PX and Aoife VDV 7PY all put in strong performances and made the opposition work very hard for their wins. India S 8CX stepped up as our top ranking player and did not disappoint, with a convincing win of 11-5 and 11-2, and is still unbeaten in this tournament. Unfortunately, Gosforth took the overall win and, as we would later find out, went on to win the entire tournament and are now the National Champions.
The girls' next match was against Wycombe Abbey, and they started off their games well, with convincing wins from Arlia P 7CX, Cali and India. Hazel and Aiofe had very exciting games and kept us on the edge of our seats, but the girls pushed through and we eventually beat Wycombe Abbey 3-2, which meant we had progressed through the 3rd/4th play-off game and were in with a chance of getting a medal.
At 4.30pm we faced Bournemouth School for Girls, who had also come second in their group. Caitlyn K 8CX stepped up first and played with confidence, despite the fact that squash is a relatively new sport for her. Caitlyn used her hockey experience to move around the court well in order to outwit her opponent, securing an 11-8 and 11-3 win. Hazel and Aiofe played their matches which went down to a final third match to determine the winner. Thankfully for us, both girls stayed calm and composed and got the final wins of 11-6 and 11-9 respectively. At this point we knew we had won the match as we had got the three wins that were needed to secure third place. However, Cali and India were still to play, with Cali playing an epic game against her opponent where the scores kept on going, as neither player could win by two clear points. Unfortunately, Bournemouth won in the end with a score of 16-14, however, Cali did not stop and the energy and effort that was expended was second to none. India kept up her unbeaten record and did so in Bagel fashion (winning a game without your opponent scoring any points) with an 11-0 and 11-1 win. To beat an opponent this easily at this level only goes to show how superb her squash skills really are.
When the final results were in, we discovered we had finished in a very convincing (and well deserved) third place! To say that we are in the top three schools in the country is simply amazing! I know I couldn't sleep that night as I was so excited, so I cannot imagine how the girls were feeling. You were simply incredible throughout this entire tournament and have made us very proud!
We entered this tournament on the back of the success from last year, and I don't think anyone expected us to do as well as last year - let alone outdo our own successes. You girls really are an inspiration and I hope that people reading this will be inspired to take up squash and carry on this legacy that you are creating! Also, a huge thank you to our coaches, Maja L and Jessie P 12B who put in all the hard work to get these girls ready for this tournament. They organised extra training sessions in their own time and were so invested in this group of girls - you really are responsible for the success of this tournament.
Thank you, girls, for being not only amazing squash players, but also kind, polite and fun along the way. Congratulations on this exceptional result and who knows what next year will bring?
I have previously mentioned in Rosebery News, that the quality and nutritional value of our canteen provision was one of the lower scoring areas from both the parent and student voice surveys conducted at the end of the Autumn Term. Work has continued with Taylor Shaw, to further develop the canteen offer, and I know many of the girls have enjoyed some new menu options, including Sushi, Subs of the Day, Noodle Pots, and an updated main menu offer. With the support and leverage of GLF Schools, these developments are set to continue after the Easter Break, with the introduction of more themed days and a new ‘High Street’ Menu offer for the Spring/Summer Term. I am hugely grateful to the students who met with the Operations Manager for Education at Elior (the parent company of Taylor Shaw) to provide feedback on menu options, take part in a food tasting event and offer suggestions to improve the menu to better reflect what our girls want.
This is likely to require a small increase in the price of the main meal and meal deal options, but I am hopeful this will deliver much better value for money, in terms of what you and your daughter expect from our canteen service. New menus should be available to be shared next week, and I am pleased that GLF Schools have also agreed to us ensuring that all children who are eligible for free school meals will still be able to purchase the High Street Option as a main meal if they wish, as their free meal entitlement, at our cost – not yours.
Next week, please be reminded that there is the opportunity to Meet GLF Schools on Monday, on Tuesday Year 10 families are invited and encouraged to attend ‘An Evening in the Life of’ event, and on Thursday all Year 8 families should attend the Curriculum Refinement Evening, with the associated website going live on Monday to help explain the choice your daughter can make.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Year 7 have had a fantastic week being immersed in a week of study skills in form time. Students have been reflecting on the use of time management, organisation, dual-coding and looking at the importance of wellbeing, and have been excitedly putting these skills into practice. Well done for all the students who have been nominated for a Study Skills Accolade on ePraise for their engagement with and contributions to form time.
House Cheer is officially underway! Year 7 are choreographing and rehearsing their cheer routines in PE lessons with excitement and eagerness. House Cheer is a brilliant opportunity for form groups to come together, work as a team, and use every individual’s strength for the success of the form group. We are encouraging Year 7 to live by the #HaveCourage and #BeKind motto as they approach conversations, practices and planning around House Cheer so that everyone feels included, heard and valued.
A huge congratulations goes to Arlia P 7CX and Aoife VDV 7PY for representing Rosebery School in the National Squash Championships and for winning third place overall. A huge well done to the whole team - you have been #Remarkable and #Proud
Next week, students in all year groups will gather together in their houses for their House Assemblies, led by the Senior Prefect Team and Sixth Form House Captains, for an update on how their house is getting on as well as information about more upcoming, exciting events. All students have been invited to design a flag for their house to submit to their House Captain to represent their house. We look forward to seeing their entries and the winning flag for each house!

Kindness Bingo
A massive well done to everyone who has already completed their Kindness Bingo cards and had them signed – we are so impressed with the wonderful acts of kindness you’ve been doing! A special shout-out to Sofia O 8EX, Polly H 8EX, and Machaela L 8EX, who were the first to hand theirs in – fantastic effort! To complete the challenge, students need to complete at least three kind acts at home. Please encourage your daughter to do something lovely and sign their card when they do!

This week, though Year 9 have been as remarkable as ever, there is one thing only that has been on the collective mind of the year group - House Cheer! With this being their last House Cheer ever, there is some fierce competition between forms and houses to see who will come out on top, and Year 9 have already put their own time aside to begin practicing their routines to make sure that they can claim the final House Cheer victory before they transition into the Upper School.
This week, I’d also like to spotlight the achievement of Jaime-Leigh P 9PX for her recent success in the United Kingdom Hip-Hop dance competition. She and her team competed two weeks ago on Friday, progressing to the final on Saturday where they placed second. They are now off to Arizona in July to represent the UK in the championships. I am so proud of how dedicated you are to your passions, and you truly deserve the success.

This week, I want to put the spotlight on how kind Year 10 are. Our lower school students are taking part in our annual House Cheer competition which, sadly, Year 10 don’t take part in now as Upper School students. But this hasn’t stopped a group of girls who have given up their time at break, lunch and afterschool to help coach and support students in Lower School. Well done and thank you to Jessica C 10MY, Lottie S 10MY, Nefeli T 10MY, Bella Rose R 10EX, Elizabeth B 10CX, Mabel H 10MY, Evie-Mai L 10MY, Tila F 10CY, Katie C 10EX, Eve A 10CX, Orla U 10PY, Olivia D 10MY, Elle W 10CY, Matilda SF 10CX, Leah F 10EY, Teagan W 10PY, Maddy C 10MX, Leila B 10MY, Aimee H 10MY, Chaise H 10MY and Luisa H 10MY.
And it doesn’t stop there! Some students have been a very kind and thoughtful friend to someone who has been unwell in hospital. They went to visit her, brought her a very thoughtful handmade hamper with lots of things inside that she likes in order to cheer her up, including a handmade card, lots of edible goodies and games they played together. Thank you to Sophie M 10PX, Emilie P 10PX and Jenny H 10PX.
Year 10 Drama students have also been working relentlessly this week on their devising exam, and I hope you all enjoy the performances next week. Finally, we look forward to seeing you at our ‘Day in the Life of a Year 10 student’ event on Tuesday 25 March from 5.30pm. Have a lovely weekend.

The sun is shining and there is a wonderful feeling of motivation and celebration among Year 11. In our Pre-Public Exam (PPE) results assembly, Mr Styles reminded students of how much they have accomplished so far, and how much they can still accomplish through marginal gains: carving out a little extra time for revision, doing a timed essay question, or forgoing a shopping trip in favour of doing a past paper. During his talk, there were many nervous faces, and yet when the envelopes were distributed, the smiles were a joy to see. We were delighted for their success and so pleased to have conversations with students who saw their grades as motivation to do better next time. We hope that your appointments at Parents’ Evening also celebrated students’ successes and gave you and them tangible next steps for how they can refine their work to build on their established success.
Work on our yearbook is also well underway, with students racking their brains for their best quotes to sum up their time at Rosebery. We also made the most of the sunshine on Thursday to take our year group photo. If you would like to order a yearbook or a leavers’ hoodie, please visit https://shop.fizz-group.co.uk/ and enter the code 26552YR11.
Finally, the task of choosing students who are ‘Rosebery Remarkable’ gets harder each week, as the students are doing so much to make us proud. However, we would like to recognise Betsy S 11EX and Emily A 11EX for seeking teachers’ advice on their PPE results and reflecting on how they could improve with real diligence.

Last Thursday, a group of Year 9 and 10 students went to the Maths in Action event at the Emmanuel Centre in London, where some fantastic speakers gave talks and demonstrations. These included a session on probability from Alison Kiddle, who had been on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?', some interesting demonstrations about shapes and smoke rings, a problem-solving session from author Alex Bellos, before concluding with a game show complete with crowd-participation. Emily Grossman (who has appeared on various TV shows) also gave us an insight into reading statistics in the media and how these can be interpreted, and there was also a session on tips for exams and GCSE's. The pupils went away with some tricks, questions and interesting skills that they could go and try at home and show their friends and family.
Congratulations to the below pupils who did incredibly well in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge and got through to the next round! They completed the second round (the grey and pink kangaroos) yesterday. Well done to everyone who took part.

Times Tables Rockstars is an online website that encourages students to practice multiplication and division skills in a fun and interactive way to develop mathematical fluency. Every student in Year 7 and 8 should have received their own username and password and have had the opportunity to log into the website briefly in a Maths lesson. If your daughter has not yet received these details, please encourage her to speak to her Maths teacher as soon as possible!
Between Monday 31 March to Wednesday 2 April, a Top of the Rocks GLF Tournament will take place. The competition will be held between 7.30am to 7.30pm each day. By answering as many questions as possible in any game type, students will gain points that contribute towards their own score, their Maths class score, and also to Rosebery School’s total score. There are some exciting prizes to be won, so please encourage your daughter to get involved and get practicing their times tables!

In a competitive U14 Hockey match against Nonsuch School, Rosebery fought hard despite a 3-0 loss. The team maintained possession of the ball for much of the game and created numerous chances in the shooting end, with Zayna A 9PY leading the attack and showing great speed and vision. While the Nonsuch goalkeeper was tough to beat, the girls continued to push forward with determination. Erin O 7MX led the defence with composure, making key interceptions and clearing the ball under pressure. Luella D 9CY made plenty of excellent saves, while Amalie M 9MY was there to support the ball off the line too. Lucia LB 7MX was key in attack, passing out wide to the space on the wing.
Although Nonsuch scored from a quick counter-attack and two goals in quick succession, the team’s resilience and spirit never wavered. The girls played excellently, demonstrating strong teamwork and skill throughout, and it was a pleasure to watch their growth and effort on the field. Man of the Match was awarded to Saoirse VDV 9PY for her standout defensive performance, and to Zayna for her excellent attacking.
