It’s always lovely to be back at Rosebery after a break, and with some Spring sunshine finally here, the last couple of days have been a delight.
Also, resplendent this week, is the new Women in Science mural that has been installed in the Science Corridor – please check it out below, and a huge thank you to the PSA for funding this, in advance of Internation Women’s Day being marked next week.
Speaking of supporting the school, you should have received communications from the school today from our School Standards Board (SSB) seeking a to recruit a new Parent SSB member – please do consider if you would be able to join and contribute to the governance of the school via this role.
I must also pay tribute to our Year 11 cohort, who have been excellent diligent and hardworking throughout this first week of Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) as they gear up for their Summer of GCSE examinations. These continue next week, but brilliant work this far Year 11!
I must thank Year 7 students and families for their engagement with the Blackout Pilot this week, as with any such initiative, there have been some teething problems, but both the school and the girls are getting used to the purpose and functionality of the App. The pilot has already attracted as lot of external interest, as the debate around the use of impact of smartphones on children continues, in both the UK and abroad.
https://schoolsweek.co.uk/school-smartphones-bans-reduce-overall-screen-time-poll-suggests/
Whilst not all are convinced, I am grateful that so many of you have provided positive feedback to us, which is always appreciated. It’s also been interesting to note the increase in the number of younger students who are either choosing not to bring a phone to school, or are using a non-smart or ‘dumb’ phone. It’s also been refreshing to work with a company who are willing to further develop their product alongside us, and adapt it based on our feedback, as we explore the extent to which such an App will bring a much better balance to the smart phone debate, and how we can perhaps pioneer a ‘best of both’ approach with Blackout and GLF Schools.
With Year 8 and Year 9 students due to go live on Monday, I am also pleased that Blackout Education have been able to allay privacy and location sharing concerns robustly – we have been reassured that the Education version of the App (which we are using) will never ask for, or track a students location, that they do not sell any data to third parties, nor do they share any user data for marketing purposes. Updated FAQs in this regard can be found HERE. Please also all be assured, that we move forward with the pilot, will move gently with the introduction of sanctions or punitive measures. This moment is about getting the Rosebery approach to the safe use of smart phones and technology right, together, with you, our families – as stated by Dr Victoria Goodyear, a holistic approach to lowering phone use by students is both needed and necessary.
Please be aware that the Year 9 DTP MEN vaccinations continue this coming Wednesday, and that Day 1 of the Year 8 HPV Vaccinations take place on Friday.
We also close early on Wednesday for our next Rosebery Collaborates, staff training session. Students will be dismissed at 1pm on Wednesday 5 March.
Year 9 Parents’ Evening takes place on Thursday Evening – onsite in the School Hall and Sixth Form Café.
Finally, it’s National Offer Day on Monday, and it’s fantastic to note that Rosebery has received a record number of first preferences, and increased its share of total preferences within the borough – this is largely thanks to the wonderful word of mouth that you pass on, so thank you again for promoting Rosebery School in the community and helping ensure it remains the number one choice for girls in Epsom! We very much look forward to our new parents and carers being invited into the Rosebery fold over the coming weeks.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Year 7 have returned to school this half term full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to take on the challenges and exciting opportunities of the second Spring half term. It has been wonderful to see the students settle back into a productive routine and we greatly appreciate your continued support in helping them get back on track and ensuring they are wearing their uniform with pride.
This week, Year 7 were introduced to Blackout Technologies, an initiative to help students think less about their phones and focus productively on the present moment during the school day. Thank you for all your support in ensuring your daughter has this app installed and enabled.
Congratulations to Yan Tung L 7PY, Myah E 7EX, Matilda M 7PY, Ellie M 7PY, Megan B 7EY, and Yan Kiu L 7CY for receiving their 'Thank You Friday' invitations for returning to school with a positive attitude.
Lastly, it was a pleasure to see 7CX’s fantastic efforts in the History Castle Competition this afternoon. The girls worked incredibly hard on their creative entries, demonstrating all they have learned last half-term and their passion for History. Congratulations to Freya M 7CX for her winning edible entry, and well done to the runners up, who received an award for recognition of their hard work and excellent castles.

We hope everyone had a fantastic and restful half term break. It has been wonderful to see so much positivity around the school from Year 8 who have returned with great energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs. Watson’s Food Technology class, 8X/DT2, where students took on the challenge of their practical assessment. Their task was to follow a complex recipe and complete it within just one lesson - a real test of their skills, time management, and teamwork. I was incredibly impressed by their focus and determination, as they worked methodically to problem-solve on the go and support one another throughout the process. The atmosphere in the room was fantastic and their final dishes looked absolutely delicious. It was clear how proud they were of their achievements. A huge well done to everyone in 8X/DT2 for their effort and enthusiasm. Keep up the great work!

We’re now in the second half of the academic year, and even though it is only the first week of the new half term, there is already a lot to celebrate and congratulate with Year 9, who have returned with vigour and enthusiasm. As ever, it is always lovely to see so many students in this year group throwing themselves into everything they do.
This week, Year 9 have had a clear focus on their ePraise record of achievement as a means of celebrating all of the milestones and achievements they accomplish throughout the year. Please do talk through your own daughter’s record of achievement at home and watch this space for more accolades that are up for grabs to mark different achievements throughout the rest of the year!
This week, I’ve been thankful to invite a group of students to our fortnightly ‘Thank You Friday’ form time. This week, my focus has been on some of the students who make use of everything on offer to them at Rosebery, including extracurricular events. I was happy to celebrate Alice C, Isabelle L and Abby B (all 9PX), Luella D and Fiona W (9CY) Darci V-R 9MY, Katelyn L 9EX and Janae M 9PY for all of their wonderful contributions to their out-of-classroom endeavours. Whether the activities are sports-based, academic or even performative opportunities such as LAMDA or school productions, these students not only embrace these opportunities, but take an active role in all those they partake in and it is a pleasure to be able to run clubs for such enthusiastic participants.
I’d also like to congratulate Alice M 9CY who competed at the Stars Of Tomorrow dance festival during half term (more on this further on in 'Student News'). I’m so thrilled that you are consistently able to show such a high standard of performance in your passions, and your successes are so well deserved! Here's to many more!
Finally, I am very proud to announce not only the first awarding of the Gold PDC Awards in Year 9, but the first in the entirety of Rosebery School. Before half term we had a group of students who decided that they wanted to do something to benefit others and raise money for Cancer Research UK. In order to do this, they had not only planned a bake sale, but had advertised, made and sold all of the products for the sale as well, spending an entire day of their own time in preparation for this. My sincere congratulations and thanks go to Bella P, Kate S, Alice P, Katie D and Evie W (all 9MX) for their fantastic efforts in fundraising in order to benefit others. What a truly selfless idea which is fully deserving of the first PDC Gold Award.

We are pleased to welcome back our Year 10 students this week and are very grateful for your support in ensuring your child arrives on time for school, dressed in the correct uniform and with all the necessary equipment to succeed in their lessons.
The second half of the Spring Term is an exciting time, especially for the Class of 2026 who will increasingly look to prepare for their first formal mock exam season which takes place at the end of June. I wrote to parents and carers this week with information and guidance as well as several important calendar events that I have summarised below.
‘An Evening in the Life of a Year 10 Student’ - Tuesday 25 March from 5.30pm (please RSVP to this event by completing this form)
Parents Evening and Spring Reports - We look forward to updating you on your childs progress in her Spring Report later this half-term and providing an opportunity to discuss it with her teachers at the Year 10 Parents' Evening on Thursday 15 May.
Work Experience - Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July 2025 (please see our previous correspondence which details all arrangements for organising placements)
Finally, I would like to thank you for your continued support. The Class of 2026 are an increasingly mature and highly capable cohort, of whom we continue to set the highest expectations so that they are fully prepared to achieve their potential both in and out of the classroom. Events such as the recent County Swimming Championships, in which Marnie B 10PY, Elle W 10CY and Isobel S 10PY made personal bests and got placings is just an example of how Year 10 continue to be brave and really shine.
We spent a lot of time focusing on students record of achievements that can be celebrated though ePraise this week. At times it might feel like there isn’t much that students have achieved, but by logging on and seeing all the accomplishments, accolades and rewards that have been presented for Year 10, it is a real testament to their hard work and this is why I am forever proud of them.

Year 11 have made it through the first week of their Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) and we couldn’t be prouder of the way in which they have conducted themselves, especially given the intensity of the timetable. On entering the exam hall, the students have seemed calm and composed and are demonstrating good strategies when it comes to final opportunities for revision.
We are hugely grateful for all you are doing at home to support Year 11 during this period by emphasising good sleep, diet and study habits. If we can please ask that you check your child has everything they need for the exams, particularly for Maths and Sciences, as we are handing out a lot of spare calculators, protractors and compasses for forgetful students!
When students have missed an exam, we would also be grateful for your support in ensuring that they check their school email account, as this is where information will be sent.
We have just 3 more days of exams to go – they can do this!

Congratulations to Freya B 11EY, Marnie B 10PY, Elle W 10CY, Isobel S 10PY and Erica F 9CX who qualified and raced in the Surrey County Swimming Championships the last two weekends. They had placings and personal bests a-plenty. Epsom District Swim Club and their parents are very proud of them.
Well done to Amy M 7CY and Alice M 9CY for competing at the Stars of Tomorrow dance competition during half term. Amy gained 3rd place for her solo in the Inter Novice Musical Theatre section, 3rd in the Inter Novice Cabaret Duet section (performing 'She's My Sister' with Alice) and 1st place with her team in the Inter Open Groups performing 'Wonderland'. The standard was very high from all the competitors and she is very proud of herself. Alice was placed 3rd with her Solo One Perfect Moment in the Inter Open Musical Theatre, 1st with the Candyman routine in the Inter Open Cabaret trio, 1st with her team performing 'Wonderland' in the Inter Open Groups and 3rd with her team with 'Jamie' in the Senior Cabaret Groups. It is a high standard competition and it was great for the girls to perform with such talented performers.

The Year 7 netball team delivered an outstanding performance today, securing a dominant 12-0 victory in their latest match against Heathside School. From the first whistle, they showed incredible teamwork and determination, with every player contributing to the win. The defence was impenetrable, with the defenders quickly intercepting passes and shutting down any attacking attempts from the opposition. In attack, the team was fluid and precise, with accurate passing and sharp shooting, leading to a well-deserved clean sheet. A brilliant display of sportsmanship and skill all-round!
The Year 8 netball team put on an impressive display today, winning 17-4 in a commanding performance against Heathside School. From the outset, the team took control of the game, with quick passes and strong communication setting the tone. The attackers were clinical, converting nearly every opportunity, while the defence was solid, restricting the opposition to just five goals. Midcourt players worked tirelessly, linking defence and attack seamlessly. It was a fantastic team effort, with the victory showcasing their hard work and teamwork. Well done!
