Second only to Teachers’ Top of the Pops, the House Cheer final is my second favourite date in the Rosebery diary – and this year did not disappoint.
A huge well done to all the girls who competed across the week, and to all the finalists who wowed the judges in Thursday’s final. It was incredibly hard to judge and split the final 7 forms.
The top 3 teams, 8PX ‘The Lion King’, 9PX ‘Beyoncé’ and 7PX ‘Zombies’ would all have been worthy winners, with the energy and sass of 9PX literally raising the Sports Hall roof! But congratulation to 7PX who just pipped them to top spot, thanks to their energy, enthusiasm and total commitment and choreography of all 31 students - a beaming Mr Sharp could not have been prouder!
I must also doff my cap to our wonderfully talented netballers, who you can read more about in the Year Team and Sports sections of Rosebery News, below. It was wonderful to see and hear the very loud and triumphant return of the Year 8 Netball Team, to school on Tuesday, as the newly crowned County Champions!
The Year 9/10 Team also excelled at the County Netball Finals at Cranleigh School, finishing in second place and securing silver medals; Rosebery’s Year 7 Team also did well to make the finals and competed valiantly throughout the tournament.
Elsewhere, across a busy final week of term, Year 7 enjoyed some wonderful weather and beautiful cherry tree blossom during their visit to RHS Wisley with the Art Department, and Year 11 Historians thoroughly enjoyed their journey to the West End to watch Hamilton, the musical.
As we’ve now reached the end of the Spring Term, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for the kindness and support you continue to show the school, particularly given the incredibly challenging start to the term which we all had to endure.
Finally, please be reminded that when we return after Easter, Monday 21 April is Easter Monday (a bank holiday) and that when school restarts on Tuesday 22 April, that it is a late start for students, who will need to arrive for a 10.50am start. Timings on the first day back are as follows:

What an excellent week Year 7 have had to round off a very busy half-term, from lots of sporting fixtures, including Netball finals and Squash triumphs, Rosebery Singers performing at the Epsom Borough Festival, Study Skills Workshops and Easter Competitions. This week, Year 7 had an excellent day at RHS Wisley Gardens in the sunshine, making beautiful sketches of the spring bulbs, cherry blossom, landscapes and tropical plants of the glasshouse, as well as engaging in a workshop from the RHS team on seeds. We hope they look after and enjoy their plants which should start to germinate over Easter.
A huge well done to all of Year 7 for their fantastic efforts and contributions to their first Rosebery House Cheer event. Each form performed excellently and shared their personalities, talents, musicality and teamwork with the rest of the year group. Don’t forget to check ePraise to see if you have been awarded a House Cheer accolade for your contribution, effort and resilience in the build up to and performing of House Cheer. A special well done to 7PX, 7PY and 7MX for making it through to the Finals and for performing so bravely in front of Years 7 to 9. A big House Cheer Congratulations to the winners of Rosebery House Cheer 2025 – 7PX! #Remarkable #Proud
Looking ahead to next term, Year 7 will start a new ‘STEM-ettes’ project in form time each Tuesday, aiming to teach them that Science isn’t a gendered subject. They will learn about famous women in Science, start a new group project to present to their forms, hear inspiring talks from guest speakers of women working in Science and have the chance to win a space on our Year 7 trip to the Science Museum. Stay tuned to find out more about STEM-ettes in the Summer Term.
Wishing Year 7 and their families a wonderful Easter and a restful break – may the sun keep shining!

The last week of the term started with the culmination of the hard work of all the form groups in the House Cheer competition. Sadly, I didn’t get to see all of the teams in action live but, having heard about the routines, it is clear that Year 9 went all out for their final House Cheer competition! Congratulations to 9MY and 9PX for getting through to the final on Thursday, and to 9PX for coming second overall in the entire school.
As ever, we finished the term with our celebration assembly, which is always full of joy! I was so proud to acknowledge all of the wonderful things that students are doing on a daily basis, whether it be their enormous number of merits, their fantastic attendance or any other contributions to the community. This term, I was pleased to acknowledge 40 students who, across the term, have been highlighted to me by different staff members for the exceptional things they have done either academically or outside of the classroom. Another special well done to Abihail P 9MX and Amy S 9CX, who were the recipients of Ms Cooke’s award and my award respectively.
The term ahead is a really exciting one. We have our leadership options meetings, our Year 9 graduation, Bronze DofE and Activities Week - not to mention the end of year assessments (with more dates to be released after Easter). I really hope that Year 9 are able to enjoy their break, stay safe and rest ready to come back raring to go for what is bound to be an important last term of Year 9.
Enjoy the break!

It has been an extremely busy week, but what a difference the sunshine makes! I am so proud of the Drama students who completed their devising practical exams this week as well as our netballers who placed 2nd in the Netball County Tournament this week!
During our celebration assembly this week I reminded students that achievements are not just based on data but also on how we feel after an event, such as a netball match, music performance or chess match. I am proud that every Year 10 student has something that they have achieved this term, and it has certainly been a term to remember.
Some of our assembly highlights can be seen HERE.
Finally, I wish you all a wonderful Easter break. Year 10 have worked so hard this term and I couldn’t be prouder of them all. 80 students received a ‘Remarkable and Proud’ Award after being nominated by the Year 10 team in addition to the extra Easter treat given out in form times this week.
We look forward to seeing you all next term well-rested and ready for next terms challenges.

As we approach the end of another busy term, we have to wonder where the time has gone. This is especially acute for Year 11, who will return for their last few weeks of timetabled lessons before beginning their GCSEs. This is an academic milestone that understandably carries a degree of nervousness - and rightly so, because these are important exams. Students are legally required to stay in education or training until the age of 18, so GCSEs are important for crossing the threshold into that next step. Whatever it may be, a good set of GCSEs provides options, and students should be encouraged to give themselves the widest possible range of options for next year and beyond.
Information concerning exam leave, dress code, timings and registration was sent to all Year 11 parents and guardians this week, so please check your emails and Bromcom for all the details.
We were delighted to recognise so many students as part of our bumper Celebration assembly this week. We aim to recognise students in a variety of ways, from celebrating when they reach a merit threshold, to awarding prizes for special acts of resilience or kindness, to rewarding students who always do the right thing. We are proud to say that we have awarded 232 Tutor merit certificates, 175 Head of Year merit certificates, 118 Head of Upper School certificates, 27 Deputy Headteacher merit certificates and 47 Headteacher awards. In addition, we have invited 82 students to our 'Thank You Thursdays' when they have been recognised for always doing the right thing, and over 35 students as 'Rosebery Remarkable', which you will have seen published here. There are also awards for 100% attendance each half term, and for earning 0 demerits each half term, recognising those who do the right thing, day in and day out. All these accolades and the prizes that they can unlock are visible in students' ePraise app - do encourage them to look, if they haven't already.
The nature of Year 11 means that it is a lot about the importance of hard work, perseverance and aiming high, but I hope as we come to the last full term of Year 11, that the students feel as though there has been much to celebrate too. While we are not done just yet, we will be cheering them on as they power through their Easter revision, and we look forward to welcoming them back to take one step closer to achieving their dreams!

On 27 April 2025, I will lace up my running shoes, pin on my race bib, and run 26.2 miles through London. After 7 years of applying in the ballot I have been lucky enough to receive a place in 2025 running for such an incredible charity. With just 27 days to go, it's time to hit hard with the fundraising and get those final training runs in.
I am running the 2025 TCS London Marathon to raise vital funds for Children with Cancer UK, a charity whose vision is a world where every child and young person survives cancer. As a teacher, I have the opportunity to work with young people everyday and see how important a charity like this can be.
Although I am very nervous, I am so excited to be part of such an incredible event. Bring on April 2025.
Thank you so much to those of you who have already sponsored any donations made before the event. Click HERE for more information and to donate.

We are seeking donations of 'You Are Awesome' books, which are read by students in Year 7, to pass on to incoming Year 6 students. This initiative aims to support their transition to secondary school.
If your daughter still has her copy and would like to donate it, please ensure she brings it to the Central Administration Office (opposite the main hall) before the end of this term.
Your generosity in supporting this effort is greatly appreciated.
The RGS Young Geographer of the Year competition recognises, rewards and celebrates young people with a passion for geography.
Why take part?
The Young Geographer of the Year Competition is designed to get students thinking beyond the boundaries of the curriculum and creatively about how geographical themes and issues are connected across places.
The deadline for entries for this year's competition is 5.00pm on Friday 3 October. Read on to find out about this year's theme, guidelines, and how to enter. This year’s Young Geographer of the Year theme is Understanding Islands.
It is estimated that our planet contains almost 670,000 islands, of which around 11,000 are permanently inhabited. Islands have a unique geography; their landscapes, demographics and coastlines vary massively.
Some are barren, deserts or rocky outcrops, others lush vegetation havens for a range of unique wildlife and plant species. There are islands seen by many as popular holiday destinations, and there are others that are inaccessible or many miles from civilisation. Every island is unique, and every island has its challenges.
The RGS is looking for eye-catching, creative and informative posters and StoryMaps (KS5 only) that delve into the socio-economic, cultural, political and physical aspects of a range of islands, showcasing their features and exploring how islands can be connected through the challenges that they face and the solutions they use to address those challenges.
How to enter
There are three categories relevant to secondary school students: KS3 (pupils aged 11-14, years 7-9), KS4 (i.e. GCSE) (pupils aged 14-16, years 10-11), and KS5 or A Level equivalent (pupils aged 16-18, years 12-13).
All entries must adhere to the entry criteria for the relevant age category, and should be eye-catching, innovative, informative and accurate.
FIND OUT MORE AND ENTER (NB: be sure to enter the UK state funded schools competition - and not independent or international schools)
Should you have any questions, please email the RGS at competitions@rgs.org
If you are interested in entering, do consider letting your Geography teacher know - especially if you would like to discuss your ideas.

The Year 9/10 team played in the County Netball Finals on Monday 31 March at Cranleigh School.
Having lost to Three Rivers Academy in the last league match, the team qualified to play in the Aspire (plate) Competition.
During the morning, the team played 5 games.
The results were as follows:
Lost 4-8 vs Woking high School
Won 3-2 vs Glebelands
Won 7-3 vs de Stafford
Won 6-3 vs All Hallows
Lost 2-4 vs George Abbot
Notable performances came from Aaliyah-Zaina R 10EY and Hannah T 10CX in defence. Both players made some impressive tips and interceptions which created important turnovers for the team. Fearne L 9EX worked tirelessly in the centre court and India R 9CY demonstrated some accurate shooting under pressure.
The team placed second in the competition and secured the silver medal on goal difference.
Congratulations to all the girls who played – they should feel very proud of their performance.
Mrs Garner - Netball Coach
On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 7 netballers travelled to Cranleigh School to take part in the Netball County Finals! Reaching this stage was a fantastic achievement in itself, as we were competing against the top schools in the area—each of whom had finished in the top two of their respective leagues.
It was an intense afternoon with over twelve schools playing indoors, and the standard of netball was very high! Our first game was against All Hallows, and as we stepped onto the court, our girls couldn’t believe they were playing against other Year 7s—they were all so tall! But our team held their own, working hard to dodge, get in front of the opposition, and move the ball down the court. The final score was 8–3 to All Hallows.
After a short break before our next match, we shuffled the players and switched up positions. In the next few games, the girls continued to hold their own and came very close to securing a win. The matches were tight, and the umpires were very strict, which disrupted the flow of the games—especially with only ten minutes to play. Across the middle three matches, Rosebery narrowly lost by just one goal in each, showing just how close the contests were!
The final game was the toughest. We went down in the first half, but after a quick mindset shift, the girls fought back in the second half. Unfortunately, the early deficit proved too much, and we couldn’t quite turn it around in time.
It was fantastic to see the girls adapting to different positions and rising to the challenge of tough opposition. There were some brilliant passages of play in both attack and defence. Next season offers a fresh start, and I believe these girls have every chance of making it to the finals again!
Well done to everyone involved—especially Molly M 7CX, who was nominated as the Players’ Player of the Match!
Mrs Hart-McKee - PE Teacher
The Rosebery Year 8 Netball Team displayed exceptional teamwork and skill to claim victory at the County Finals, an achievement I hope they will remember forever.
Their first match against Rodborough School was a strong start, with Rosebery dominating the game to secure a 5-1 win. The team showed great composure with sharp shooting and superb defense. Sophia P 8EY was a standout in defence, making crucial interceptions to keep Rodborough at bay. Isla L 8MY took her chances at shooting. Meanwhile, Neve K 8CY excelled in feeding play, linking the attack beautifully. The team was off to a fantastic start.
In their second match, Rosebery faced a much tougher opponent in George Abbot School. The game was incredibly tight and, with only six seconds left on the clock, the score was 2-2. That’s when Phoebe B 8CY stepped up, scoring a brilliant equaliser to secure a draw. In the mini bus as we approached, I told the girls to take their chances at shooting and just give it a go, and Phoebe certainly did this. Throughout the morning the team’s resilience and determination were on full display as they never gave up.
The third match saw Rosebery take on the Royal School A Team (Royal A) and they responded with a dominant 7-1 victory. Evie H 8CY, the team captain, led the charge, keeping the team organised and focused. Polly H 8EX fed the ball in consistently. The attackers were once again awesome in front of goal, and Sophia continued to shine in defense, ensuring Royal A had very few chances to score. With this impressive win, Rosebery remained firmly at the top of the standings.
The fourth match saw Rosebery take the win against a very competitive Salesian School side and remain in control of the game, securing a victory of 5-2. This meant that Rosebery had definitely secured either 1st or 2nd place and the last match was all to play for.
In their final game, Rosebery faced All Hallows School. The team knew that a win would secure first place, allowing them to take home a trophy and medal, and they delivered with a 5-3 victory. Evie’s O-S 8MY leadership was key, while Lucy C 8MY provided excellent support in feeding the play out of defence. With a solid defence and impressive shooting from Evie, Rosebery sealed the win and became County Champions.
Rosebery’s victory was a testament to their incredible teamwork, joy, and kindness. Their laughter, togetherness, and determination made it worth the early start. The quote of the day - "this is the best day ever", with Polly continuing, "who else can say they are Year 8 County Final winners?"
