We have had the staff, students and families of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Carmarthenshire, of Birley Academy in Sheffield and of Bancroft’s School in Woodford Green in our thoughts over the last week. Whilst different in cause and circumstance, each school community will have been shaken to their core by such traumatic and violent incidents and I have written to the Headteacher of each of the schools to convey our sympathy and support. We know such dark and frightening events can have an impact well beyond the communities immediately affected and will offer support to any student or member of staff who is feeling particularly anxious or distressed by what has happened.
Such events reinforce my sincere gratitude for things which perhaps I too often take for granted; daily positive interactions with students and colleagues, meeting with terrific Year 9 students to discuss their GCSE options, investigating the framing of Guy Fawkes with my lovely Year 7 History class, supervising groups of students enjoying each other’s company in the sunshine in the quad over lunch, or observing students demonstrating great musical, sporting, mathematical, linguistic and creative talents in lessons across the school. For example, it has been a pleasure to review the fantastic artwork completed by our GCSE artists for their two-day exam this week. Ms Rundle could not have been more impressed by the dedicated and focused approach of our Year 11 students, which is the culmination of hours of planning and preparation. Year 11 timetabled lessons have now concluded as we focus on intervention days for English and Maths prior to the start of their examinations. Staff continue to be on hand to provide support, encouragement and wisdom in the forthcoming days and weeks. Go well Year 11!
Our Rolling Read programme for Year 7 and 8 students is an embedded part of our school day. The importance of reading for pleasure for children and adults cannot be overstated, and therefore I was delighted to see how any students attended our book fair on Tuesday. Please keep encouraging your daughter to read; ‘Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world!’ (Napoleon Bonaparte)
Our team of Year 12 Gold Duke of Edinburgh students have headed to one of my favourite places, the Peak District, for their practice expedition. In July they travel to the Pyrenees and Miss Godwin is clear that the Peaks needs to be as realistic rehearsal as possible for what will be a tough few days – although the wet British weather may present a rather different challenge to Spain in the summer! We wish them all safe travels, and I am hugely grateful to Mrs Watson, Miss Croft, Miss Elms and Miss Morris for supporting the students over the 4-day trip.
Finally, we are concerned that a number of students are not wearing the correct uniform. Please use the extended weekend to ensure your daughter has black leather school shoes; trainers of any kind are not acceptable. We are also confiscating increasing numbers of earrings and necklaces – please ensure these are left at home. Thank you for your support.
Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend.

Please see the image below outlining our guidelines for shoes as part of your child's school uniform. While not exhaustive, we accept black, polishable school shoes only. Please see the image below for an outline of the shoes which we do and do not accept.

Y10 Parents' Evening (in-person)
It was a joyous start to the week as we gathered with our Year 7 students for assembly which centred around the importance of 'seizing the day'. Together, we reflected on the myriad of opportunities this cohort have encountered thus far, and it has been wonderful to see them embrace this with such enthusiasm. As part of our reflection, we shared the story of a Year 13 student who expressed some regrets about not trying certain things during her time at Rosebery. This served as a poignant reminder for our Year 7s to always be brave and to never shy away from new experiences when they are presented to us.
In line with this ethos, we have introduced the 'seize the day' initiative. Encouraging our students to broaden their horizons, this card challenges them to try eight different clubs throughout the remainder of the summer term. We are excited to see who attends the most clubs - there may even be a prize!
On a separate note, we would like to say a huge well done to Isla L 7MY. Isla recently attended a National School Gymnastics Competition in Stoke where she represented Rosebery, and she did us proud by achieving a silver medal - well done Isla!
7CX: Yube C and Poppy E - for always being so helpful and kind each morning, and always offering to assist with any chores that need to be done.
7CY: Emilia F - for being a kind friend and helpful to other members of the form.
7EX: Imogen M - thank you for volunteering to be the new birthday monitor for 7EX! Also, it has been great to see you have been receiving merits for excellent classwork.
7EY: Drew W - for showing great resilience, and Mia F - for being courageous and disciplined.
7MX: Margot L - for her resilience in the face of adversity, kindness to others (especially members of the public who need a seat on the bus) and determination to teach herself ballet.
7MY: Lucy C - for her positive contributions in lessons and dedication to new extracurricular opportunities.
7PX: Beth G - for being amazing in starting up crotchet club.
7PY: Alvina W - for scoring 63/75, a grade 5 piano theory exam, achieving a merit for the exam, 2 marks away from getting a distinction.
Congratulations to Isla L 7MY

This week, Year 8 and I have spoken about the importance of seizing the day and ensuring that we endeavour to make the most of every opportunity that we have been given. It seems apt that this coincided with our curriculum refinement deadline, and I’m so pleased that Year 8 have taken this milestone so thoughtfully, asking the important questions to make the best decisions for themselves, and maximise their learning in the years to come.
In that same vein, I'm pleased to congratulate Erica F 8CX for her recent swimming success. Erica was not only selected for the South East Regional relay event for Epsom, but additionally the South East England Regional Galas. This is a fantastic achievement and reward for your hard work; but even sweeter were the personal best times you achieved along the way. Very well done Erica, we’re so proud of you and your dedication to your talent.
As this week marks the halfway point of this half term, I would be remiss not to have an eye on the rapidly-approaching final term and all the delightful chaos it brings. Please see attached a provisional calendar for the next half term. I’m acutely aware that assessments will be the striking event on this for many of our students, and a more specific timetable will be released for these in due course.
8CX: Eve W - for her motivation to complete the Silver AIM Award.
8CY: Ophelia G - for her amazing contributions and efforts towards her work.
8EX: Olivija B - for being kind and helpful at home, baking a delicious pizza for her family.
8EY: Freya P – for her fantastic ideas during the Year 8 Student Voice.
8MX: Annabelle B - for her unwavering commitment to doing what's right around school, coupled with her boundless enthusiasm for every aspect of her learning journey at Rosebery. Well done for being such a great role model to your peers, Annabelle!
8MY: Francesca B - for great work in Maths and thoughtful engagement in our Wednesday and Thursday form sessions.
8PX: Ciana T - for being hardworking and determined in all lessons.
8PY: Alex K - for her high standards every day - well done!
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 8
Miss Morris - Deputy Head of Year 8
This week, Miss Fielding presented an assembly about opportunities and how these are not always presented to us at scheduled times, but we should always take them. Our motto of being brave and taking risks has never been more appropriate, and we hope that Year 9 have been able to reflect on this message.
Curriculum refinement meetings have started, and the leadership team and I have relished the opportunity to speak 1:1 and hear such positive feedback from their Year 9 journey so far, as well as their hopes and fears for the future.
To help guide students through the remainder of our Summer term, we have provided a timeline of events taking place after May half term. More information about the assessments will follow, however, having the dates will allow students to feel a little more prepared. Year 9 assessments are important, as the data navigates students towards different groups in their subjects for Year 10.
We are so proud to hear of the recent swimming achievements from Marnie B 9PY who, along with others from Rosebery, was selected to swim in the South East England Regional Galas. These swimmers all did an excellent job, gaining some personal bests, but sadly no medals. Additionally, they were selected to swim at the South East Regional relay event for the Epsom District Team. A huge well done to Marnie B 9PY, Isobel S 9PY, Caitlan H 9MX and Elle W 9CY.
9CX: Jazmin J - for her high score on the Sparx Maths leaderboard.
9CY: Tilly S - for showing confidence in participating in assemblies last week.
9EX: Abigail N - for consistent effort across the year in her Science lessons!
9EY: Sania J - for making it onto the merit leaderboard after working hard across all her subjects.
9MX: Calista W - for being in the Sparx Maths top 3 for the past 3 weeks. Well done.
9MY: Zoe B - for her continued positivity within lessons and her attitude towards learning.
9PX: Emilie P - for patiently explaining her Year 9 Business Studies Enterprise Project and answering my many questions about how it works.
9PY: Emily W - for her continuous positively with 0 demerits to date.
Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
We have been fortunate enough to have some sunshine this week, and this brings with it a truly lovely atmosphere around Rosebery, as students sit and enjoy the good weather at break and lunch time, chatting with their friends. However, we know that, despite the relaxing picture being painted here, Year 10 have a renewed sense of purpose as Year 11 leave and they become the eldest in the pillar school. We have had several conversations with students who have referenced their desire to do really well in the end of year mock exams, and to have as much information as possible to enable them to feel fully prepared (as our year group motto says) for what’s to come. With this in mind, we wanted to share a few things that we will be doing to help students feel confident and ready to do their best.
On Thursday 9 May, all of Year 10 will be off timetable for a ‘Ready for Mocks’ day. This will involve sessions on English, Maths and Science specifically, as well as session exploring what meaningful revision looks like. Please note that students will be in uniform, as will be the case for mocks. The day will end at the slightly earlier time of 2.30pm; if you would like your child to stay on-site for any reason, please let us know via the 'Contact Us' page on the website.
Parents' Evening on Thursday 16 May will be an opportunity for you and your daughter to meet teachers and discuss what has gone well so far, as well as tangible next steps for your daughter to reach the next level in her studies. Please see the email this week for information on logistics and how to book.
Furthermore, we will be using Form Time more than ever to help students prepare for mocks, with bitesize revision sessions building on the information about revision techniques that we have been drip-feeding throughout the year. You can support by ensuring that your daughter is on time for the start of Form Time (8.30am) so that we can make the most of these sessions.
In addition, we recognise that preparing for exams is more than just studying flashcards, or making revision notes, and therefore we will also be incorporating sessions that remind students of the need to look after their physical and mental wellbeing during times that can feel stressful.
As we mentioned in our Assembly with Year 10 this week, we have every faith in them. They have conducted themselves this year with focus and purpose, and have been great at seeking support and following teachers’ feedback. The only limits they have now, will be the ones they set themselves, and we hope that they will feel determined and empowered to do their very best.
10CX: Nithilam M and Georgia P - Nithilam has recently completed her Tamil GCSE exam - well done! Georgia spoke so confidently in our recent assembly as part of her role in the JLT.
10CY: Freya L - for always being a pleasure to have in form time and achieving her 75 merit certificate.
10EX: Isis L - for always being so conscientious, and for sitting her GCSE Cantonese speaking exam - well done!
10MX: Vivian D - for her excellent work and contributions in Sociology, especially with her reflections on responses to exam questions. Well done.
10MY: Cassandra L - for her independent hard work preparing for her speaking exam this week.
10PX: Lottie S – for always acting with integrity, doing the right thing, being committed to her learning and showing kindness to others.
10PY: Olivia F – for saving a penalty for her football team.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
I cannot believe that Year 11 have one day left in school until their exam leave begins on 8 May. It has been the busiest of weeks for Year 11 who have done an amazing job with the amount they have had to do. Well done to all the Art students for completing their NEAs, as well as all students for completing their first drop-down day in either Maths or English (only one more to go!).
It was a lovely day on Thursday celebrating with a year group photo in the quad to signpost the last day of timetabled lessons. Also, the individual form photos have been fantastic to see, and the tears (although sad to be finishing such a huge part of their life) show how much of an impact Rosebery has had on them.
As always, Year 11 are an exceptional year group. We wish them all the best with their first exams next week. We have always believed in them and now is their time to shine. Good luck to the Class of 2024!
11CX: Keely L - for being a supportive friend.
11CY: Olivia T - for fantastic participation in student voice.
11EX: Zahra V - for her courage and determination in her French speaking exam.
11EY: Marta N - for her positive attitude to her studies.
11MX: Lucy F - for coming third in her horse jumping show at the weekend.
11MY: Jess S - for always trying her best and being kind.
11PX: Myla C - for her continued determination during drop-down days.
11PY: Alice L - for continued determination throughout the school year.
Miss Foster - Head of Year 11
Ms Godwin - Deputy Head of Year 11
Over the past two weekends, a group of students from Rosebery were selected to swim in the South East England Regional Galas. Freya B swam freestyle, Erica F swam backstroke, while Marnie B swam butterfly and backstroke. In addition, Isobel S, Caitlan Hennessy and Elle Watts were all selected to swim at the South East Regional Relay Event for the Epsom District team.
The relay team sadly did not do as well as hoped, but they certainly pushed through with determination. Freya swims this weekend, while Marnie and Erica both swam last weekend and did an excellent job, gaining some personal bests, but sadly no medals. The club and the parents are all very proud of the girls.
Please find our Summer Term Enrichment Timetables linked HERE.
We have exciting plans for Activities Week in the final days of the Summer Term, with an array of energising events that will consolidate student’s work during the year, as well as developing their team building skills. You can view the itinerary for each year group below:
Letters to individual year groups have already been sent home with further details, including the ParentPay items and the payment deadlines. Students who are not participating in Activities Week will be expected to stay in school and in lessons. If you have any questions about this or payment-related queries, please contact the Central Administration Team at trips@roseberyschool.co.uk .
A reminder that, as the weather hopefully gets a little warmer, students should ensure that they have appropriate PE kit for all of their PE lessons (see image). A number of students have been trying to wear their school shirt underneath their school jumper and therefore will not take this off during lessons if they get warm. All students should be wearing is a PE polo, whether they choose to wear a jumper on top or not.
Also, students are reminded to ensure they bring a water bottle to each lesson and have suncream in their bag, if the weather is particularly hot. Finally, we ask students to have a roll-on deodorant rather than spray so this can be used after lessons in the changing rooms.
Miss Croft - Head of PE

Do you play the steel pans? Are you part of a Bhangra dance group? Or are you a Chinese food enthusiast? Rosebery’s Annual Culture Week is coming up in June, and the Senior Prefect Team would like to make it even bigger and better for 2024! We have lots of activities and events planned but we’d really like to have an external group volunteer to come in and share their culture with the students, such as a traditional dance group or music group.
Anything is welcome, such as games specific to a certain culture, or even cuisine! We’d love to hear from you, so if you have any connections or contributions, please contact Mrs Ringer using the contact us form on the website.

Last Thursday, the Year 7 football team travelled to Cobham Football Club for the League Finals. This season, the competition unfolded within the Leatherhead & Guildford League, delineated into Leatherhead and Guildford districts. After a series of triumphs, Rosebery emerged victorious in the Leatherhead district, earning them a coveted spot in the League finals against Guildford County, the champions of the Guildford district.
As this was our last chance to secure some silverware this season, the team were very much ready to get the game underway and put in 100% effort to secure a win. Their offensive prowess took Guildford by surprise as Rosebery swiftly netted two goals within the opening five minutes, courtesy of Izzy C 7MY and Katie E 7PY. The first half didn't cease to deliver excitement, as Neve O 7MY and Daisy M 7CX added two more goals to our tally.
Guildford County started the second half strong and scored early, but Rosebery maintained composure and resilience and managed to score two more goals thanks to a brace from Katie and Daisy. Rosebery won the game with a score of 6-1 and showcased some of their best footballing play all year.
We are incredibly proud of everything the Year 7 squad has accomplished this year and I am highly anticipating the promising journey that awaits us in Year 8!
