What a wonderful joy filled week it’s been at Rosebery, and such a fitting way to reach the end of another half term.
At the start of the week, the Lower School was a buzz with excitement throughout an incredibly competitive house rounders tournament for Years 7 to 9, as well as a number of rounders matches taking place against other Surrey schools.
It’s been a great year of sporting highs for Rosebery and Team PE and that has continued into the athletics season. Both the Junior team and a number of individual athletes made it through to represent Central Surrey at the next stage of the competition (individuals) and in the Regional Finals (team) – please read more about both rounders and athletics in the PE section of Rosebery News.
Our annual Year 8 trip to the Somme Battlefields took place on Wednesday, and I’m hugely grateful to Mr Chamberlain for organising what is always a well-attended and much loved trip, taking in Vimy Memorial Park, Thiepval Commonwealth Memorial, Fricourt Cemetery, and the Newfoundland Park Memorial.
Amongst the public exams for our GCSE and A Level students, and our Year 12 Matriculation assessments, Year 9 stole the show for the remainder of the week, with their Lower School Graduation Day on Wednesday, followed by Bronze Duke of Edinburgh training and practice expedition, yesterday and today. I don’t know many state schools who can pull something like this off, and I am hugely grateful to Mr Waight, Miss Fielding and Mr Harvey for putting on such a wonderful series of activities, which included mortar boards, smoke grenades and a silent disco! There will be some tired bodies and blistered feet making their way back to Year 9 families this afternoon – but that is the joy and ambition which we are all about! #RoseberyProud
At the start of the week, we also welcomed families from our new cohort of students who will join Year 7 in September and hosted our small school mixers for those students in Year 6 joining from smaller feeder schools. The privilege of being the Head of such a successful and oversubscribed school is not lost on me, and I want to express my gratitude to you, our current families, for promoting and championing the good name of Rosebery School in the local community – it really does make a difference, so thank you.
I must also thank the PSA again, who raised over £2,000, in pre-loved uniform sales and through the PSA bar during the transition events. In such austere times, when school budgets are being squeezed ever more, and we, like many schools are having to consider how to save more money and reduce our expenditure, their work and your donations make such a difference.
Finally, you may or not be aware that the DfE has launched a review of statutory guidance on the teaching of RSHE, which covers the teaching of relations education, relationships and sex education, and health education in schools.
There is a link below to the consultation document and online survey (closing date 11 July), which you may wish to access.
RSHE REVIEW - CONSULTATION DOCUMENT
Given the scope of the review and content of the consultation document, we have decided to pause the teaching of some elements of relationships and sex education in the final half term, and move these into the Autumn term, to ensure our PDC (citizenship) materials are compliant with this new guidance. Albeit, since making this decision, I now note there will be a general election and therefore possibly a new Government in place before the consultation closes!
Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend and half-term break.

And just like that, the fifth half term of Year 7 is over! As we approach the end of the Year 7 journey, we are beyond proud of everything that our students have achieved this year. This week saw our Year 7s come together for House Rounders, showing their resilience as they braved the rain to see the tournament out - well done to our winners 7MY (A) and 7CX (B).
On Tuesday we shared that 7PX had won a visit from the ice cream van for having the highest number of merits as a form, following a brilliant half term for them as a team! The celebrations continued on Thursday as we gathered in the hall for our celebration assembly! It was joy to come together as a year group and share all the wonderful achievements from this half term, but more so to hear our students supporting and celebrating one another! This assembly marked my last as Head of Year 7 for the year group, and while I am incredibly sad to hand them over, I am so proud of how they have transition into secondary school and settled so well into Rosebery life. The cheers echoed down the main corridor as I shared that Miss Linehan will now be taking on the role of Head of Year, I know they are absolutely in the best hands!
Next half term our students can look forward to 'Drills 4 Skills' sessions focusing on revision in preparation for the end-of-year exams, Sports Day and Activities Week! A reminder that ParentPay will close any payments for Activities Week on Sunday 2 June.
And finally, a big congratulations to Ella H 7EX for completing the 15-mile 'Marsden March' earlier on this month! Ella has been fundraising for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and has raised nearly £1000 so far - we are so proud of you, well done!
Have we hope you all have a wonderful and restful half term break!

The penultimate half term is finally at an end, and what a fun-filled end we have had! This week it has been lovely to celebrate all of our wonderful Year 8s who are consistently doing the right thing and going above and beyond to excel. It was such a pleasure to be able to reward 80 individuals for their hard work in lessons, their fantastic attendance, as well as their engagement in the AIM award. The ice cream van treat was made even more sweet knowing that it was teacher and tutor nominations that meant our students were rewarded.
It was also a great privilege to accompany Year 8 on the Battlefields trip to the Somme this week, and despite the early morning, Year 8 were incredibly enthusiastic, and were asking so many insightful questions about WWI and the region. It was a true pleasure to be able to learn about this myself.
We’ve currently had some beautiful pictures sent through, and the three best pictures sent to me from the trip will be rewarded after half term!
I hope you are all able to get a good rest and come back raring to go for the final(!) half term of Year 8.
8CX: Mabel F-T – for her consistent hard work and dedication in her lessons.
8CY: Zuhal M - for being helpful in tutor time.
8EX: Rebecca P - for believing in others, by helping and supporting her friend in maths lesson. Shanaya K and Mariam E - for designing, creating and updating our forms' calendar.
8MX: Lesley T - for being such a good sport whilst performing a solo karaoke number during our fun Friday session. Absolute superstar!
8MY: Elodie S - for being an excellent role model on the battlefields trip this week, and contributing to the memorial chalkboard at the centre.
8PX: Mariam K - for demonstrating excellent effort in all lessons.
8PY: Amelia O - for her wonderful form time quiz about musical theatre.
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 8
Miss Morris - Deputy Head of Year 8
What a fantastic week of enrichment activities for Year 9. We’ve seen House Rounders, escape rooms, mortarboard-making, a Million-Pound Drop gameshow, first-aid training, map-navigating and the Bronze DofE expedition.
I am still smiling from the joy that unfolded during our Graduation Day. The students had the best time and made memories that will last a lifetime. In my speech, I applauded the support that Year 9 show each other and how important it is to keep that momentum going as they embark on their upper school journey. It will be tough at times, but with the bravery and resilience that I have seen, I know the year group will do well. In particular, I love everyone’s unique passions for what makes them smile, whether it is Sport, Music, Drama, Art, Baking, Maths challenges or Science experiments. Whatever it is, that is what will keep Year 9 smiling and allow them to leave Rosebery as well-rounded individuals.
I am grateful for your support in making sure Year 9 return after this well-earned rest with a fully equipped pencil case, correct school uniform, PE kit and the correct attitude for jumping into upper school with their best foot forward.
In our final half term, we continue to have lots to look forward to, including our Activities Week in July. More information about this will be made available after the half term break. For now, please enjoy the week that follows, and we shall see you again in June.
9CX: Merryn H - for her continuous diligence and for always demonstrating integrity.
9CY: Heidi R - for her amazing artwork that we celebrated in celebration assembly this week.
9EX: Kitty W - for her fantastic half term full of merits - well done.
9EY: Lucy P - for demonstrating a positive attitude in form time and great effort across her lessons.
9MX: Dareen B - for the excellent feedback from Maths about her effort this term.
9MY: Jessica C - for her excellent efforts bowling in House Rounders!
9PX: Annabelle C - for achieving the highest weekly merit total.
9PY: Millie F - for her excellent classwork and contributions to Citizenship in recent weeks.
Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
This half term has flown by, and I am sure that Year 10 will be glad of a moment to catch their breath after everything they have done this past six weeks. Our Celebration Assembly this half term was a lovely opportunity to recognise how they have seized each opportunity with enthusiasm, effort and resilience. Whether that be Silver DofE, District Sports, our ‘Ready for Mocks’ day or the LAMDA exams, Year 10 have risen to the challenge and done themselves – and you – proud.
Naturally the headline event for next half term is mock exams, which is a helpful moment, both in terms of students academic attainment and their wellbeing. We recognise that the formality of the timetable, exam hall and paper scan feel daunting, and we would like to remind students that, aside from assessing progress, this is also a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the logistics of public exams, which will inevitably be coming their way.
Students have been given a wealth of information on how to revise, which was outlined with you at parents’ evening last week and via last week’s Rosebery News. In addition to signposting them to the relevant revision materials, you can also support at home by encouraging healthy revision behaviours, such as :
Making sure your child has a good eating and sleeping routine
Encouraging them to take breaks if you suspect they have been revising for too long
Helping them to identify when their brains need a break
Encouraging exercise (even just walking the dog)
Helping them to relax with music, art, a film or a good book
Gently but firmly removing any distractions (such as mobile phones) so that they can concentrate
Telling them that they just need to so their best – that's all we can ask!
Finally, while it may be motivating to offer a trip to the nail bar as a reward for revision, we would ask you to be mindful of our uniform policy, which does not allow false nails, jewellery, unnaturally coloured hair or piercings other than one pair of studs in the earlobe. Trainers are also not permitted, so please ensure that your child has appropriate school shoes. Thank you so much in advance for your support, and have a great half term.
10CX: Grace C - for being so enthusiastic and engaged in her GCSE PE lessons where she has attended extra fitness classes to support her fitness and theory knowledge.
10CY: Jasmine B - for always being a pleasure to have in form time and achieving her 75-merit certificate!
10EX: Anisha G, Tilly H and Marie P - for doing brilliantly on the Duke of Edinburgh practice, and getting a huge number of merits over the past week.
10MX: Grace Cl - for achieving over 100 merits so far and many of these being for showing excellent effort in her lessons. Well done.
10MY: Bethany H - for numerous little acts of kindness to others over the past half term.
10PX: Eve B - for completing the Big Walk for Dyslexia - well done for this brilliant achievement!
10PY: Isla M – for her resilience this year, and for persevering even when things feel difficult.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
I cannot believe that we are halfway through exams! Year 11 have had another fantastic week and have come out of their exams so positively, which I feel is a real testament to how hard they have worked. Exams resume on Monday 4 June with Maths Paper 2 in the morning, for the whole of Year 11, so make sure you have your calculators ready. Year 11 have truly excelled themselves this half term and we couldn't be prouder of what they have achieved and the way in which they have adapted to their exam leave.
After half term, we will be sharing more information about Leavers Day on Thursday 20 June and Results Day in the summer. Although this half term has gone quickly, I feel Year 11 are thankful for the short break to give themselves some much-needed time. We hope Year 11 have a lovely half term break which involves both some well-deserved rest as well as some revision. It important that they balance their time over half term, as during the first week back there are numerous exams for all of the year group. They don't have long to go now so just make every moment count before they can enjoy their long summer break.
Well done again and take care of yourselves over half term!
Miss Foster - Head of Year 11
Ms Godwin - Deputy Head of Year 11
Aaliyah-Zaina R 9EY came first place in her age group of thirteen to fourteen year olds in the Reigate Music Festival. She performed Mozart's Ah vous dirai-je Maman twelve variations. Well done Aaliyah-Zaina!

Please find our Summer Term Enrichment Timetables linked HERE.
The KS3 Summer Assessment timetable has been shared with all parents and carers via email. Please click HERE to view the timetable. These assessments are a comprehensive review of the work students have completed over the year. The timetables have been designed to aid students in managing their organisation and revision effectively.
Subject departments have provided detailed information regarding each assessment on Google Classroom and within their lessons. We encourage students to use these resources as they prepare.
While we want our students to do well and revise diligently, we also recognise the importance of not placing unnecessary pressure on them. We appreciate your support in maintaining a balanced approach.
Mr Harvey - Head of Lower School
It was a pleasure to take some students to Epsom College on Tuesday afternoon to hear Sir John Scarlett, the former head of MI6 (or C as he was known), speak about his fascinating, if somewhat opaque, 40-year service therein. Our students had this to say about their experience:
As History and/or Politics students, we had the privilege to attend a lecture by Sir John Scarlett at Epsom College about his life working in the Secret Service. This was an invaluable experience, as we learnt how Sir John was able to witness history unfold in real time. One such moment that was outlined in his speech was when he saw the collapse of the USSR encapsulated by the changing of the flags over the Kremlin from his vantage point in the British Ambassador Residence in Moscow. As well as this, we learnt about the significant impacts that working for MI6 had on Sir John's life, such as working with KGB double agents, using safe houses, how to deal with constant surveillance and finally forming friendships and cooperating with former KGB agents and adversaries when the Cold War came to an end.
Whilst we've lost hope of ever actually being scouted by agents to join MI6 (which is how he was recruited back in the 1970s) there is still the chance to apply online for those of you who would suit the spy lifestyle!

Well done to the Years 8, 9 & 10 Athletics team, who put on a fantastic display at the District Athletics competition last Thursday. Although the day wasn't your typical summers day, there were some outstanding performances all-round. A special well done must go to Sophia T 10EX (1500m), Annabelle C 10EY (Shot Putt), Francesca B 8MY (Javelin) and Elodie S 8MY (Shot Putt), who came in the top two of their respective events and have been selected to represent Central Surrey at the next stage of the competition.
The PE department wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing how they get on!
Miss Croft - PE Teacher
On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 7 students travelled to the Priory School to play rounders on a very wet and cold afternoon! Luckily, we were playing in an indoor dome which the girls found fascinating. What was even more incredible was that one of our Year 7 teams was taking on Priory's Year 9/10 team. However, the girls were not fearful and went into the game very excited after an afternoon of House Rounders!
The first team took on the older Priory team and started the first innings of fielding very well and batting some excellent hits, taking the risks where necessary. At the end of the first innings, Rosebery were leading 11-8½! Going into the second innings it was much closer, but Phoebe B 7CY fielded fantastically on second base and Kendah D 7MX was consistent with her bowling which meant that Priory only scored 4½ compared to Rosebery's 6. The final score was 17-13 to Rosebery. What a brilliant result considering they were playing against girls who were 2/3 years older than them. A particular congratulations goes to Phoebe B, who received Player of the Match.
The second Rosebery team took on the Years 7 & 8 Priory team, and this was a much closer contest! After a very tense first innings with some great hits, it was 8½-8 in favour of Rosebery. Going into the second half, it was important for Rosebery to think tactically and field the ball to second and fourth base to stop the score. They not only did this, but they also managed to get four players out! They also hit really well, and this resulted in the final score being 14½-13½. Well done girls, in particular to Bonnie B 7MX, who received the Players' Player award.
This week saw the last House Games of the year before the finale of Sports Day next half term! The girls in Years 7 to 9 were taking part in House Rounders, and they were absolutely brilliant!
On Monday, the Year 8 girls kicked us off and brought the amazing sunshine with them. The whole of Year 8 were on the astroturf and their spirits were high (and the level of rounders matched it). All the girls took their roles very seriously and made sure they were on the right pitch at the right time, while really listening to the advice the umpires were giving them. It was, as always, very competitive and all the girls were playing to win. Some results were very close, and many of the final placings had to come down to rounders scores as they were level on points. But the overall winners were 8CX (A team) and 8PX (B team). Well done to both teams who played superbly throughout! The final standings for all the teams were as follows:
A Team:
1st - 8CX
2nd - 8EY
3rd - 8CY
4th - 8PX
5th - 8EX
6th - 8PY
7th - 8MX
8th - 8MY
B Team:
1st - 8PX
2nd - 8EY
3rd - 8MY
4th - 8EX
5th - 8PY
6th - 8CX
7th - 8CY
8th - 8MX
On Tuesday afternoon, it was Year 9's turn to take on House Rounders and, unfortunately, they did not bring the sunshine! The games started with some light drizzle until eventually the heavens opened. However, the girls dealt with this brilliantly and the rain did not deter them. Spirits and engagement levels were high and we all embraced getting soaked.
The standard of play was really high and the amount of rounders being scored was superb. The level of noise made up of cheer and support from their peers was also off the charts. It was brilliant to see how encouraging the girls were being towards each other. Unfortunately, we couldn't play the last two games as the weather had now made it unsafe, meaning we had to come in slightly early and base the results on the five games that had been played. A huge congratulations to the winners (9CX) who were unbeaten throughout!
Final results:
1st - 9CX
2nd - 9PY
3rd - 9MY
4th - 9PX
5th - 9CY
6th - 9MX
7th - 9EX
8th - 9EY
Finally, on Wednesday, we managed to get out with Year 7 despite the cold and drizzly weather! Year 7 brought the most House spirit - the mascots and banners on display were excellent! Year 7 have fully embraced House Games this year and House Rounders was no exception! The standard of play across the field was brilliant, and the knowledge of the game and the rules was outstanding considering several girls had hardly played. Once again, there were some very close games, and in one of the groups three teams finished on the same number of points! Overall the A team winners were 7MY and the B team winners were 7CX - well done to both tutor groups!
A Team:
1st - 7MY
2nd - 7CX
3rd - 7MX
4th - 7CY

8th - 7PY
B Team
1st - 7CX

Mrs Hart-Mckee - PE Teacher
Last Friday, Rosebery entered a junior (Years 7 and 8) and intermediate (Years 9 and 10) team into the Track and Field Schools Cup. This event took place at the Guildford Spectrum in very hot and sunny conditions. It was a great day, and all the girls who took part performed very well. Within the rules, it states that most competitors have to take part in two events. This meant that some individuals took part in an event that they weren't necessarily familiar with.
Notable performances in the junior team came from Maisy R 8EX (100m), Darci V-R 8MY (1500m and Shot Putt), Francesca B 8MY (300m and Javelin), Lucy V 7PY (800m and Shot Putt), Caitlyn K 7CX (1500m), Florence H 8EX (High Jump) as well as the relay team.
In the intermediate team, the following girls placed high in their events; Sophie L 10CY (200m), Annabelle C 10EY (Shot Putt), Louise B 10EY (1500m), Katie M 10MX (300m), Amelia P 9MX (1500m) and the relay team. It was such a busy day, with the staff officiating and timekeeping the various events. Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to take any photos, however, this was a great start to the Athletics season. We wish the girls every success in their forthcoming Athletics fixtures. As of Thursday, we have also been informed that the junior girls team have qualified for the Regional Finals on Tuesday 18 June. Good luck girls!
Mrs Garner - PE Teacher
Well done to the Year 8 Rounders team who had their first fixture of the year against Three Rivers Academy. The girls dominated both innings with a total score of 16½ rounders to 8½. Opposition's Player was awarded to Izzy C 8PY for her consistent batting throughout the game. Well done to all players, we look forward to seeing you after half term at training.
