We are very proud of the 70 Year 10 students who excelled on their practice Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition this week, through rain and shine! I am very grateful to the staff, led by Miss Godwin, who gave up their beds for 2 nights to make this happen. Several of the students on this expedition were also part of the very successful group of students who participated in District Athletics at Kingsmeadow in Kingston. Many congratulations to all students who have taken full advantage of these enrichment opportunities. And in a busy week for Year 10, we were delighted to welcome parents of this year group for their first in-person parents evening this week. We are very grateful that so many of you came in for these very important meetings.
This week we have been marking Mental Awareness Week; indeed, Mrs Jenns has nominated a number of students from all year groups who have led assemblies, have visited tutor time, and have organised fundraising activities for mental health charities. The theme chosen by the Mental Health Foundation is #MoveYourWay, highlighting the huge amount of research which demonstrates the positive impact on mental health of physical activity.
Despite the most welcome increase in the profile, funding and participation in elite women’s sport, 1.9 million fewer women than men take part in sport each week; by the age of 14 boys are twice as active as girls. We know the power of effective role models – there has been a 4% increase in girls playing football since the Lionesses won Euro 2022, for example – but there are still significant barriers to girls engaging in sport including low self-esteem, the impact of puberty, a lack of confidence to try something they might not be immediately good at, a fear of missing out with friends who don’t play sport, the pull of digital and social media which fills their spare time, and a feeling that they don’t belong in sport, in the way that boys do.
In my recent Year 9 option meetings, it was a pleasure to hear a number of girls speaking positively about their membership of Epsom and Sutton rugby and Epsom cricket clubs, their training with Leatherhead FC, their swimming achievements at County and National level, and their love of dance at Lanes and I know this is a sample of the many activities our students of all ages are involved in each week. Sport England’s most recent research in 2023, highlighted that when families engage in sport together, girls remain involved in physical activity for much longer into their adolescence and beyond. The report also highlights that the mental health benefits for all members of the family who play team sports, hike, cycle, run, walk, practice yoga or go to the gym are profound, and that when families are active together, it creates positive social connections, promotes confidence and resilience, significantly reduces ‘screentime’ and fosters a sense of belonging for all. Whilst life has never been busier, the challenge for us all is to model prioritising physical activity for our daughters, and to enjoy spending time together in so doing!
Have a good weekend.

This week our Year 7 students have been exploring the importance of mindfulness and its many benefits as part of 'Mindful May' on the Year 7 journey.
Mindfulness is a valuable practice that helps enhance focus, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. To introduce this concept, Year 7 spent Wednesday morning listening to music and completing mindfulness colouring activities. This exercise not only allowed them to express their creativity but also served as an excellent way to refocus their attention and prepare for the day ahead. The students responded positively to the activity, finding it both relaxing and enjoyable. It's wonderful to see them embracing techniques that promote mental clarity and emotional balance, which are crucial skills both inside and outside the classroom.
Next week, we look forward to our penultimate celebration assembly to recognise both individual and whole tutor group successes, we are particularly excited to see the merit winners who would have earned themselves a visit from the ice cream van! House Rounders will also take place, providing another opportunity for students to earn some additional house points ahead of the last half term where the cup winners will be announced at Sports Day.

One more week to go until Year 8 get a much-deserved rest for all their efforts this half term. This week I’ve been particularly proud of our Year 8 Wellbeing Ambassadors, who have not only contributed to Wellbeing Week with a wonderful assembly and form visits, but have played such an active role in all the activities that have been planned for the broader school. It’s a genuine pleasure to see this group of students playing a pivotal role in the Rosebery community and the culture we are committed to ensuring.
Next week also promises lots of enjoyment, and the excitement shall peak on Monday when we have House Rounders that afternoon. A reminder that all students will be taking part in this and can wear their PE kit to school on Monday for this. Miss Morris and I are excited to see the final house competition before the ‘big one’ that is Sports Day just before the summer holidays.
We also have the Battlefields trip next week, led by the History department. Please can you ensure your child has everything they need for the day and is appropriately dressed for any eventuality (including the rain which is currently forecast!). I’m certain this will be an incredibly moving, and memorable trip, and I’m looking forward to visiting with those students who are attending.

The Summer term is flying by and the vast majority of Year 9 are working relentlessly in lessons, ensuring that they are prepared for the assessments scheduled to take place after our half term break.
Before that though, we have an extremely busy week coming up, with our Graduation Day on Wednesday and our Celebration Assembly before then concluding the week with 170 students taking part in their Bronze DofE training on Thursday and Friday.
Thank you to those who have paid your contribution on ParentPay for the Graduation Day, which includes a Silent Disco from 5.00pm to 6.30pm in the Main Hall. Unfortunately, we haven’t received nearly half as many contributions as we had hoped, so we haven’t been able to purchase some of the crafting materials required for the making of student's mortarboards. Therefore, we have asked students to source some coloured paper, card, material, glitter pens, felt tips, etc as well as bringing in glue and scissors in their pencil cases for Wednesday.
In a similar vein, a reminder that if you are happy to donate your child's ‘You Are Awesome’ book, which was provided in Year 7, for a future Year 7 student to read, please send it in to the Year 9 office.
Have a lovely weekend.
9CX: Evie C - for her continuous enthusiasm and engagement during form time!
9CY: Alesha J - for her consistent hard work and positive attitude.
9EX: Jenna H - for her passionate interest in Physics.
9EY: Hailey C - for working hard towards her GCSE Chinese.

Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
It has been another very busy week for Year 10, with 70 students taking part in their Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. Despite the questionable weather forecasts, and a few diversions, they all showed exceptional resilience and determination to complete the trek. We are so proud of them all!
It has also been wonderful to see so many of you this this week for our first on-site Parents’ Evening. We hope that the conversations you had with your child’s teachers enabled you to understand what is going well, as well as some tangible work-ons ahead of mocks. A summary of what will be assessed, and how your child can best prepare, is found HERE.
As if that wasn’t enough, Year 10 students also represented the school in District Athletics, where their behaviour and conduct were reported to be exemplary. Not only did they show determination in their disciplines, but they were also extremely helpful to younger year groups, showing that they have taken on the mantle of ‘head of the pillar school’ with maturity.
In form times, we have continued to provide revision activities for students to practice their core subjects ahead of the mocks. We have been pleased to hear students saying that they have already started revising, and that some are reaping the benefits of their hard work in the year by being able to re-use the notes they made for previous assessments.
Looking ahead, beyond the mocks, we have two exciting opportunities for Year 10 as part of Activities Week this year. It is phenomenal that over 200 students have secured placements for their work experience week, especially as this is the first time this has been trialled in Year 10. Many thanks to you for supporting and facilitating the search.
Following this, we also have our trip to Thorpe Park, following the popularity of last year’s Chessington trip. This will be an exciting and memorable way to celebrate the end of Year 10, as a group, and I hope that your child is excited about going. If you have not yet signed up, please do so via ParentPay as soon as possible so that we can confirm numbers.
Year 10 have done so much this week, we were almost running out of space! We would like to also congratulate Eve B 10PX for completing The Big Walk for Dyslexia - raising money for a very important cause. Well done, Eve!
10CX: Poppy D - for being so courteous and kind to others - not only in tutor time but all the time! You're a pleasure to have in the group!
10CY: Emily M - for always being a pleasure to have in form time and achieving her 75-merit certificate! Well done, Emily.
10EX: Jess A - for doing her GCSE Portuguese exams - amazing work!
10MX: Sophia C - for her hard work in her subjects over the year and making it into the Top 10 for Sparx Maths this week. Well done.
10MY: Iona P and Ida S - for always making the start to the day a positive one, rain or shine.
10PX: Lady Alexandra L - for being positive and polite in form time.
10PY: Niamh K - for her maths advice to others during form time.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
A huge well done to Year 11, who have completed their first full week of exams! They have conducted themselves with such maturity and confidence and it has been lovely to see you all emerging so positively from exams. Well done for all your hard work!
A reminder that there are lots of deadlines coming up. The yearbook and hoody order closes on Friday 24 May. After this, we cannot amend the order as it is an external company producing these (please find the letter HERE). I am pleased to say that there has been a lot of uptake this past week. Also, Ms Wild, who is organising the Year 11 Prom, would like to remind parents and carers that purchasing prom tickets can be done until Friday 24 May. After this date, the ticket purchasing will be taken off of ParentPay. We also would like to remind parents and carers that if you have any old uniform or PE kits that you are happy to part with, please can these be brought in and given to Ms Wild who can utilise this for the PSA.
The very best of luck to Year 11 with their exams next week! One more week and then half term - you've got this!
Miss Foster - Head of Year 11
Ms Godwin - Deputy Head of Year 11
Please find our Summer Term Enrichment Timetables linked HERE.
This half term we have started a crochet club which is open to all students to help them have a fun break and learn a new skill. We anticipated 5 students to come along, but were pleasantly surprised when 30 students turned up! The first session was spent learning how to chain stitch, but some people were already ahead of the game and were making mushrooms and bags.
During lunchtime the atmosphere is lovely; many students are helping their peers and giving them tips while focussing really hard on something other than school work. It is great to see so many people enjoying Crochet Club and wanting to learn, even if they get a bit frustrated when starting off, since it is quite challenging.
Anybody can come, anytime, so bring your hooks and wool and have some fun!
Rania A 12B - Deputy Head Girl, Wellbeing

What a glorious day for an U13 softball cricket fixture! The girls played two matches last Thursday evening against local schools, Ashcombe and St Teresa's.
Despite these being our first cricket games of the season, the girls lost by a small margin of runs, losing 189-206 against Ashcombe, with the Bowler of the Match being awarded to Zayna A 8PY, while Batter of the Match went to Erica F 8CX.
They then, unfortunately, lost 52-40 against St Teresa''s, with Bowler of the Match going to Zayna A 8PY and Batter of the Match going to Caitlyn K 7CX. Well done girls, we are super proud of your efforts and look forward to our season!

Students have been actively participating in activities during Mental Health Awareness Week, engaging in creative endeavours like jewellery making, crochet, as well as games in the Quad and Just Dance. Thank you to the Wellbeing Ambassador team for their support throughout the week. Below are some of the activities.
National College has produced a guide on the impact and possible reasons of school avoidance. Statistics from the Children’s Commissioner found that in the 2022/23 academic year, 22.3% of all pupils were persistently absent – a significant increase from 2018/19 when that figure was 10.9%. This lost time can have a notable impact on children’s development, learning and overall wellbeing. Please click HERE for more information.
Barnados have an Out of Hours Parenting helpline. This free helpline is to provide advice and guidance to parents/carers who have a child with a diagnosis of ADHD, or those children/young people who present with similar behaviours and who do not have a diagnosis of ADHD or are waiting for assessment.
The Out of Hours ADHD Parenting Helpline is free of charge service that runs 365 days per year from 5pm until 11pm. We can offer a listening ear and advice to ensure children feel safe and increase parental confidence to de-escalate a situation and use strategies discussed to help both parent and child. We can also email our leaflets and other information after the call as a reminder of the points discussed.
The free number for the ADHD Parenting helpline is 0300 222 5755 (press OPTION 4).
We have received excellent feedback from those parents already using the service and we want to ensure that no parent feels isolated and alone in the evenings.
