A highlight of the year, and a rite of passage that we no longer take for granted after COVID, is our Leavers’ Day for Year 11, on the completion of their GCSEs. We have been hugely impressed by the maturity and work ethic of this year group, and it was with genuine sadness that we bade them farewell in a lovely celebration assembly and then at the Prom at Denbies in the evening. The students looked wonderful, and it was a delight to see them dancing the night away (many in flip flops by mid-evening!) and enjoying each other’s company. I am very grateful to Miss Foster and Ms Godwin for leading this year group with such commitment, compassion and energy, and to Mrs Wild for, once again, organising a beautiful prom.
We are very pleased that so many Year 11 students, along with a significant number of external students, will be joining us for our Sixth Form Induction Day on Monday. Students will have the opportunity to attend sessions in the subjects they have chosen (and some they haven’t, if they remain unsure), gain advice about making applications to the most competitive universities, engage in enrichment activities and talk to lots of our fabulous Year 12 students about their experiences. If your daughter is yet to sign up, but would like to attend, please contact Mr Phillips, Head of Sixth Form, and she will be added to the programme.
Another joyful annual event is our GCSE and A Level Art & DT Exhibition, which never fails to inspire and amaze. The standard seems to improve year-on-year, and it was a privilege to join parents/carers and staff to admire the immense creativity and talent on show. The exhibition kicked off Rosechella, a week of creative arts events, including concerts, drama and dance workshops, visits from stage make up artists and the LAMDA showcase. Many thanks to our Art, DT, Drama, Music and PE teams for organising such an exciting, original and stimulating week.
Have a lovely weekend.

We are very nearly finished with the end-of-year assessments, and it has been lovely to see all the diligent preparations for these assessments continue right through to the end. There have been some great lessons learnt about revision and preparation for exams, and hopefully Year 7 can carry forward some of these experiences into Year 8.
This week continued to be a busy one for our students. Our first set of Sports Day activities took place on the school site today with our throwing events - well done to all students who participated in these! The main event (the big Sports Day bonanza) is on Thursday, where the remaining track and field events occur. As a reminder, these events are taking place off site at the Harrier Centre. Students need to meet us there at 8.30am and will be dismissed from the venue at 2.30pm. The current forecast is set for sunny weather, so in form times this coming week we will be reminding students to ensure that they are packing sun cream and adequate food and water for the day as well as (in the case of a sudden turn of weather) waterproofs.
We must congratulate all of those who took part in the Regional Athletics Games held in Ashford on Tuesday and the KS3 Cricket Competition at Kingston Grammar School on Thursday - the PE department were very impressed with the efforts of our athletes against many other schools. Well done to those involved.
There was more charity fundraising - this time coordinated solely by our Year 7 students, with a cake sale dedicated to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Thank you for all your hard work and truly fostering the spirit of compassion and community, especially in a week that was already quite busy!
A reminder that next Friday is also an INSET day for all GLF schools, so we hope that the Year 7 students use this as a great opportunity to enjoy a well-earned break.

The end-of-year assessment window has finally closed. I have been really impressed with the preparations and the responsiveness of Year 8 throughout this window, in both getting ready for exams, but also receiving and reacting to the feedback that they have been given so far. Though stressful, I think Year 8 have shown terrific resilience which will put them in great stead for the challenges of the next academic year.
Next week, we’ve a packed, but shortened week, impacted by not only our early finish for Rosebery collaborates on Wednesday, but our GLF inset day meaning a 4-day week next week for our students. The headline act of the week (and quite possibly the year for many) is our imminent Sports Day. I am incredibly excited, as I know many of the year group are. Let’s hope the weather stays beautiful for what I’m sure will be a wonderful day.
Have a lovely weekend.

What a difference some sunshine makes! It has been all things creative this week with our Rosechella event that started Wednesday and continues into next week. It has been a joy to see Year 9 getting involved in many of the activities, including the stage make up workshop at lunchtime Thursday. Some very realistic creations there! I felt like I was on the set of the TV programme Casualty.
With the creative theme in mind, it has been lovely spotlighting on some Drama lessons this week whilst Year 9 are rehearsing their devised pieces. Along with the Music performances and Art work, we really do have a talented year group.
Some of our Year 9 students represented us at the County Cricket competition in Kingston this week, whilst many others have started the 2024 sports day extravaganza with the throwing events today.
A shortened week next week with an earlier finish on Wednesday, Sports Day Thursday and then our GLF INSET day on Friday.
Have a lovely weekend.

Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
It’s Friday, and Year 10 are well over halfway through their first ever set of mock exams. Mr Hewett and I would like to share how immensely proud we have been this week, especially with the exams sat in the Sports Hall, which can understandably feel daunting. At the start of this year, we spoke to you about how we wanted Year 10 to feel at this point in the school year, and the word we came up with was ‘prepared’; ie. feeling confident and calm about the exams, even if they were nervous about the specific questions. Walking around before an exam, watching them all sat calmly with their revision notes, there is a feeling that Year 10 have come into their own this week. Inside the exam hall students have been calm, attentive, focused and polite, and speaking with them afterwards they expressed their relief at getting another exam done. In this set of mocks, understanding and managing the logistics and the emotional impact of exams is as important as the final score: as we have said to the students, this is a dress rehearsal, so we can sort out any hiccups now before the real thing.
Looking ahead to next week, we have the last few exams to complete, before Year 10’s very last Sports Day on Thursday 27 June. We would love for them to embrace the whole festival atmosphere, get involved in some of the events, and of course, make lots of memories to look back on this time next year!
10CY: Jess F and Daisy S - for impressing members of staff with their attitude and conduct during Duke of Edinburgh. Well done!
10EX: Tilly H and Sophie S - for taking part in ball patrol for GB Hockey a few weeks ago - well done!
10EY: Evie W - for being so diligent and disciplined with her after school revision.
10MX: Destini H - for some excellent contributions in English discussions.
10MY: Rosie G - for voluntarily organising the form participants for Sports Day.
10PX: Kitty Y - for being proactive and engaging brilliantly on her recent work experience placement. What an amazing opportunity you had!
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
That's it. Year 11 are done and the class of 2024 now start their long and well-deserved summer break! It was a joy to see Year 11 in school on Thursday for Leavers' Day, celebrating their last 5 years at Rosebery. It was an amazing morning, with lots of goodbyes and good lucks. Thank you to Year 11 for such a wonderful morning. There was such a lovely atmosphere and it showed how much they've grown and come together as a year group. We finished off with our prom at Denbies, which just highlighted how amazing this year group are. Year 11 looked phenomenal as they dressed to impress and spent their final time together as a year group. It was a remarkable send off and we could not be prouder of the way they conducted themselves as well as celebrated with a night full of dancing.
As I said in our Leavers' Assembly, whatever you do next and wherever you go, always know that Rosebery will be a part of you. I have loved every minute of being Year 11's Head of Year and I wish them all the best for their new adventure. We will see each other on Results Day to celebrate the success of your exams.
Have a lovely summer and look after yourselves!

Ms Godwin - Deputy Head of Year 11

Culture Week was a huge success, raising over £500 for the Doctors Without Borders charity, all thanks to the many people who got involved! We received some fantastic submissions made by students for the Global Food Sale, including delicacies from South Africa, Sweden, Brazil and India, which were all sold to raise money for this incredible charity. We also had the opportunity to watch a variety of brilliant performances from students in the 'Culture Showcase', from singing and dancing, to art and even poetry!
The highlight of the week was seeing everyone coming into school in their cultural outfits and flags to represent their identities, which displayed the cultural diversity we are so lucky to have here at Rosebery.
Global Food Sale

We are excited to announce that we are running a 'Read for Good Readathon' for Years 7, 8 & 9 during the week of Monday 1 July to Friday 5 July.
It has been proven that children who read for pleasure are more likely to be successful and happy throughout their lives (OECD, 2002).
The charity 'Read for Good' encourages children to read through its uniquely motivational approach that inspires reluctant readers to 'give reading a go' and keen readers to read more widely. Pupils can choose whatever they want to read - it’s all about reading for fun. The money they raise in sponsorship helps to provide a regular supply of brand new books and a resident storyteller to every major children’s hospital in the UK. Last year, Rosebery School managed to raise £900, which is an amazing achievement. We are hoping to achieve even more this year!
The only way to sponsor a child this year is by clicking the link HERE (which can be shared with friends and family). Your child should log every online donation they receive in their sponsorship card and hand this in to their teacher, or to Miss Robbins in C12, at the end of the readathon to be in with a chance of winning a prize. The deadline to hand in cash donations is Friday 12 July.
Miss Robbins - Deputy Head of English and KS3 Co-ordinator
Well done to the Motion Dance team for representing Rosebery at the Epsom and Ewell Dance Festival this week! The theme was 'School' and the girls performed a history-themed commercial jazz routine to 'SIX: The Musical'.

If you are interested in joining Motion Dance classes at Rosebery in September 2024, sign up for a free class HERE.
Rosebery School has had many students sign up to the NCS experiences this summer, meaning that we have qualified for their Gold Champion School status. To celebrate this, we have been presented with a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
Mrs Keaveney - Student Careers, Guidance and Health Mentor
We are currently recruiting for a Pastoral Support Officer and also a Food & Textiles Technician, further details of which can be found HERE. These are exciting opportunites to join our fantastic team at Rosebery.
Following the success of the 50/50 Club last year, we have a brand new 50/50 Club for the academic year from 2024-25. It is very easy to sign up via ParentPay to be in with a chance of winning a cash prize. You will be helping to fund vital school activities and projects. Further information is available on the PSA page of the school website.
Thank you to everyone who bought tickets for our fantastic Summer Raffle supported by The Personal Agent and Stevensons. Ticket numbers are being emailed out in time for the prize draw on Friday 5 July. Watch this space!

Windrush Day is a commemoration held on Saturday 22 June to honour the contribution Caribbean migrants and their families have made to the UK.
In this heart-stopping adventure, Benjamin Zephaniah shows us what it was like to be a child of the Windrush generation. Leonard is shocked when he arrives with his mother in the port of Southampton. His father is a stranger to him, it’s cold and even the Jamaican food doesn’t taste the same as it did back home in Maroon Town.
But his parents have brought him here to try to make a better life, so Leonard does his best not to complain, to make new friends, to do well at school – even when people hurt him with their words and with their fists. How can a boy so far from home learn to enjoy his new life when so many things count against him?
Hortense Joseph arrives in London from Jamaica in 1948 with her life in her suitcase, her heart broken, her resolve intact. Her husband, Gilbert Joseph, returns from the war expecting to be received as a hero, but finds his status as a black man in Britain to be second class. His white landlady, Queenie, raised as a farmer's daughter, befriends Gilbert, and later Hortense, with innocence and courage, until the unexpected arrival of her husband, Bernard, who returns from combat with issues of his own to resolve.
Told in these four voices, Small Island is a courageous novel of tender emotion and sparkling wit, of crossings taken and passages lost, of shattering compassion and of reckless optimism in the face of insurmountable barriers-in short, an encapsulation of the immigrant's life.
In June 1948, hundreds of Caribbean men, women and children arrived in London on a ship called the HMT Empire Windrush.
Although there were already Black people living in Britain at the time, this event marks the beginning of modern Black Britain. It’s also become a wider symbol of today’s multicultural Britain.
Combining historical fact with voices from the Windrush generation, this book sensitively tells the inspiring story of the Windrush generation for younger readers.

Last week, the Year 8 Athletics team travelled to Hinchley Wood School for a local competition against seven other schools.
The team did Rosebery proud, not just based on their results, but also how they conducted themselves throughout the competition.
They showed incredible teamwork and cooperation, respect for the other competitors and resilience within their own disciplines. Their resilience and determination was a running theme for our students, as we took 1st place in 7 out of 10 events. It was not only a joy to see them succeed individually, but it was lovely to see them celebrate each other's achievements as much as their own.
I am sure that it does not come as a surprise that Rosebery were crowned champions as they dominated the points table with second place a considerable amount of points away from the top spot.
A big well done to all of those involved, Team PE and the whole school as so proud of you:
Maisy R 8EX - 100m (1st), High Jump (1st) & 4x100m Relay (1st)
Clarice S 8EY - 200m & 4x100m Relay (1st)
