It’s Friday, and the balmy weather we are all enjoying at Rosebery this lunchtime is an appropriate way to end a fabulous week with the students enjoying both House Football and House Netball – they did brilliantly throughout the week, and I must thank the PE Team for orchestrating and hosting the events. What has also been music to my ears, has been hearing the rehearsals for the School Production, Sister Act, come to life as the musicians, dancers and singers have been brought together this week, and are rehearsing again on Sunday. I am hugely grateful to the Drama and Music departments for coordinating such a wonderful spectacle, aided by Ms Elms’ expert eye for choreography – she will be asking me to offer GCSE Dance next!
I am equally grateful to Mrs Jones, Head of History & Politics, for designing and leading assemblies for all year groups this week, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place each year on 27 January. This year’s theme was the fragility of freedom and I have included a copy of the assembly (which you can access by clicking the image below) and a link to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust HERE.
I cannot quite believe that next week sees us move into February, and we are excited to welcome a group of 25 students from Taiwan to Rosebery. They will be visiting for two weeks and I am hugely grateful to the students who have agreed to buddy with them this year, on what is fast becoming an annual tradition.
If I could remind parents and carers of students in Year 9 that Meningitis ACWY and Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio (DTP) immunisations take place on Tuesday & Wednesday (for those who have consented), and to parents and carers of students in Year 7, that Parents’ Evening takes place on Thursday, in the Main Hall, Main Corridor and Sixth Form Common Room, noting that parking on site is not possible.
Next week, we have students entering a Squash tournament at Epsom College, competing in County Netball (U12 & U13), in District Netball (U16) as well as aiming to replicate our previous success in the renowned Bar Mock Trial Competition – throw in a visit to Poetry Live, and it promises to be another exciting week at Rosebery.
Have a lovely weekend

Congratulations to Year 7 on another fantastic week! We have particularly enjoyed seeing the year group striving to act with kindness and integrity both in and outside of the classroom, particularly as our 'Bounce Back' scheme is well underway! It has been a joy to welcome so many students to the office to receive their prizes! 'Bounce Back' will be running throughout the rest of this half term, so there are plenty more opportunities for students to be rewarded for their hard work!
Another highlight from this week has been the highly anticipated House Football and House Netball. The enthusiasm and team spirit displayed during House Games on Thursday afternoon was truly impressive. Congratulations to both 7PY and 7CX/7CY who were crowned winners of House Football and House Netball respectively.
As we gear up for the penultimate week of this half term, we are excited to welcome parents and carers on site for Parents' Evening, next Thursday. If you have yet to book your appointments, please refer to the email sent to you on 17 January for more information.

It has been such a great week with Year 8. I have seen students engaging thoughtfully in their Maths lessons about algebra; debating about society in English lessons; investigating forces in Science and practicing their chalk drawings in Art. Year 8 never fails to impress me with their hard work and dedication within lessons and it is great to see these high levels of motivation being maintained. We were lucky to have Mrs Jones speak to Year 8 about the Holocaust, with this Saturday marking the annual holocaust Memorial Day.
The importance of learning from the past and previous atrocities remains vital, and this was a message that was a source of reflection for our Year 8 students this week, with the group thinking carefully and thoughtfully, not only the tragic losses of life, but those whose integrity drove them to help those in need.
Finally, it was lovely to have the excitement of House Netball on Tuesday. The most joyful part of the term is always seeing the forms band together as a team and working together to achieve.
8CX: Hanna R - for her enthusiasm with House events
8CY: Niamh P and Eshaal M – for their teamwork and enthusiasm as part of the forms merit challenge
8EX: Maisy R - for her hard work and practice towards national gymnastics competition

8PX: Izzie M - for representing the Rosebery community in a National Dance competition - well done!
8PY: Freya R - for her friendly and enthusiastic attitude every day
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 8
Miss Morris - Deputy Head of Year 8
It has been a busy week for Drama students, who had the pleasure of going to see ‘The Witches’ at The National Theatre, which was one of the best adaptations I have seen in a long time. Everyone had a great time (despite the scary parts!). Not only that, but our cast of 'Sister Act' have had extended rehearsals this week on top of assessments in lessons.
On Wednesday, the History department delivered a powerful assembly on The Holocaust, with this Saturday marking the official date of Holocaust Memorial Day. What stood out to me was the bravery of people who took risks to stand up for themselves and support others. I followed on with a message to Year 9 about being brave, and we have launched a 'Brave Award', where each week students will be selected at random to receive an Amazon voucher, if they have been awarded a courageous merit.
Finally, I am grateful for all your support at home in encouraging your child to take risks, communicate clearly and effectively, and to be brave, as these skills can be transferred into school life, thus enhancing their educational experience.
9CX: Hannah T - for her incredible efforts and success in her History assessment!
9CY: Elle W and Emma R - for being our netball stars
9EX: Charlotte W - for her staunch efforts in our House Netball journey!
9EY: Hailey C - for consistent hard work in all lessons
9MX: Charlotte H - for showing great sportsmanship shown at House Netball
9MY: Sophia S - for her hard work during House Netball
9PX: Sophia S - for always helping to take down extra lab stools in the morning with no complaints and a smile on her face.
9PY: Hannah J - for trying hard in all her lessons and for her impressive drawing of a clock in her Art lessons
Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
This Saturday marks the official date of Holocaust Memorial Day, and as such, we had the opportunity to hear from the History Department about why we commemorate this day annually. Not only did we hear about the atrocities that took place, but we were also inspired by the brave people who risked everything to protect others. While the aim of Holocaust Memorial Day is to ensure that these events never happen again, we can nevertheless carry forward the messages of kindness, compassion and integrity into our own lives, and this is what we hope will inspire Year 10.
In addition, we want to say how proud we are of Year 10 for approaching their recent assessments with such conscientiousness. Walking into form time this week, Mr Hewett and I have seen them intently studying, quizzing each other and reviewing their flashcards, which was great to observe and sets them on the right path for the ‘main event’ next summer.
Finally, thank you for ensuring that our students are looking smart in their uniform for the school day. We would be grateful for your additional support in ensuring that they are in school shoes, and not trainers, as the term continues.
10CX: Mia H, Iris A and Hannah B - for preparing and delivering fantastic speeches to be voted form captain - you were all brilliant - huge congratulations to Mia who received the most votes
10CY: Ruby K - for dedication to completing her celebration report over the past few weeks
10EX: Lexie P - for putting herself forward for house captain and being interested in making creativity a part of house competitions.
10EY: Millie S - for volunteering to be our House Captain!
10MX: Rowan W - for being chosen to compete in an England Hockey National U15 Girls Schools Indoor Hockey Tournament in February - good luck, Rowan!
10MY: Rhea T - for her recent musical successes, including adding Grade 8 clarinet to her accomplishments on the saxophone and piano just before Christmas
10PX: Alison E, Emily T and Prathyusha N - for standing for House Captain and giving excellent speeches
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
Well done to Year 11 for an incredibly busy and hardworking week! A huge well done to students who have either completed, or are currently completing, their NEAs. It takes a lot of time and dedication for practical subjects, but Year 11 have risen to the occasion.
We finished this week with an assembly on the upcoming mocks and shared the timetable with students (which can also be seen below or by clicking HERE). This means they can start meaningfully planning their revision time. Next week in form time, we will be focusing on creating a revision timetable that allows students to do this. As always, we reminded Year 11 in assembly about how important it is to be in school and how their attendance is vital to their success in their GCSEs. Year 11 now know that there are only 97 days until their last day of lessons before study leave begins, therefore they need to make every second count. Well done Year 11!
11CX: Sylvie M and Charlotte I - for their consistent positivity and supporting their peers.
11CY: Olivia T - for her excellent performance in the mock exams.
11EX: Sophie V - for her consistent determination and efforts across subjects.
11EY: Isabel L - for her positivity and determination.
11MX: Riya C - for doing really well in her French exam.
11MY: Libby H - for improved effort in form time.
11PX: Finya D - for determination and engagement with interventions.

Next week, our Year 10 students will embark on a journey to explore and plan their work experience. This will be marked by some engaging form time activities to set the stage for this enriching process.

The Rosebery Student Futures Programme is dedicated to inspiring our students to envision their future education and careers. Throughout the year, we organise a variety of engaging activities, such as alumnae events and talks from industry specialists. One key highlight is our work experience programme in July, where Year 10 and 12 students will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into their chosen fields.
We are actively seeking partnerships with businesses or individuals willing to host our hardworking, enthusiastic, and diligent Rosebery students for a week, whether in person, or virtually. If you are, or someone you know is, interested in being a part of this impactful initiative, please take a moment to fill out our Google form by clicking HERE, where you can share details about what you have to offer.
If you cannot offer a placement, but you have a passion for a specific industry, or know someone who could inspire our students, or simply wish to contribute ideas on how we can further inspire career exploration, we would welcome your input; your support plays a vital role in shaping the future aspirations of our students. Thank you.

Mrs Dever - Head of Drama
On Monday, the Year 8 Cup Squad travelled to Winston Churchill School for a Surrey Schools' FA Cup fixture. Despite a valiant effort, and an impressive display of resilience and determination, our team unfortunately fell short in the third round of the competition. The match was fiercely contested, and the second half saw Year 8 completely dominate the game. However, despite their best efforts, the ball could not seem to find the back of the net. The match ultimately came down to penalties, where we unfortunately ended up losing 2-1.
While the result may not have gone in our favour, I am so proud of the journey they have had this year in both the Surrey Schools' FA Cup and the English Schools' FA Cup!
Miss Linehan - PE Teacher
The Year 7 netball team enjoyed participating in the District Netball Tournament at St Teresa's, Effingham. We faced tough opposition in the first game against Tormead School. The ball kept travelling from end to end and shooting conditions were tricky due to the extremely windy weather. Rosebery managed to win this first match with a score of 3-2. In the next two games, the girls worked extremely well as a team. Communication was good and both their passing and their shooting were accurate.
Rosebery managed to beat Notre Dame School and St Teresa's before facing Sutton High in the indoor court. The start of the game was played particularly fast and (at times) became a little unorganised. Once it had settled down, Rosebery demonstrated some great netball. Many amazing interceptions were made and the shooters converted many shots from long range - very impressive! Once back on the outside courts, Rosebery faced a strong team from William Perkin CofE High School. It was such an exciting game, with the ball changing hands every few seconds. Unfortunately, Rosebery narrowly lost this match with a final score of 3-2. In the last game of the day, Rosebery were up against Manor House School. It was great to end the day on a high, with Rosebery winning 10-1!. Well done to all the girls who represented Rosebery at this event.
Mrs Hart-McKee's Player Award went to Polly H, while her Player of the Tournament was awarded to Caitlin H. The final results were given, and Rosebery won the tournament, finshing on equal points with Tormead but managing the overall win on goal difference.
Mrs Garner - PE Teacher
On Tuesday, our Year 7/8 hockey team 7/8 hockey team competed in a friendly match against Nonsuch High School. The girls showed pure commitment and hard work throughout! They battled incredibly hard but sadly lost 6-1. Naomi F 7CX was voted Star Player by the opposition - well done! I look forward to seeing these students progress in the future. Despite the final score, you have all shown true Rosebery values.
Miss Elms - PE Teacher
Last Thursday, we took our Year 7 and Year 8 B Teams to Ashcombe School to compete in a netball fixture. Both teams played two games: a friendly and a competitive league game.
During the friendly matches, the Year 7s won their game with a score of 7-6, while the Year 8s drew 5-5. This was a good warm up for their league games and it also meant that students could build on working together as a team. When it came to the competitive league games, both teams won their matches. Year 7 won with a score of 17-3, with Pheobe B being voted Players' Player, while our Year 8s finished with a score of 15-4, with Abi L being awarded Players' Player. Furthermore, our students were given the opportunity to develop their scoring skills, with some players learning how to correctly keep score.
Well done to both teams, you played some incredible netball. I look forward to seeing you all progress as players!

If you would like to attend, please could you complete this form so we are aware of numbers for an appropriate venue.
PANS and PANDAS are conditions that often appear very suddenly and affect the physical and mental health of children and young adults. They develop in the wake of common infections (such as Covid-19, chicken pox, influenza, or strep A in PANDAS cases), when the infection subsequently causes a misdirected immune response and/or brain inflammation. Symptoms of PANS and PANDAS can sometimes make education and school life difficult for children and young people. The NHS does recognise the condition now but an established clinical pathway is still being worked on and so can go undiagnosed in many young people. Numbers in the UK are unknown at this point, but in the US it is estimated that 1 in 200 children and young people will have one of these two conditions.
Please find a parent and carer guide for further information into the condition by clicking HERE . If you have concerns about your child, please reach out to your GP in the first instance and let the SEN Team know.
