It’s been a fantastic start to 2024, albeit a slightly cold one, and I am grateful to all parents and carers for ensuring that students are attending every day, ready to learn and in the full and correct school uniform – the students may well have told you how much they are enjoying Mrs Mariner and Miss Bailey enthusiastically challenging them at the gate each morning.
I must also praise the positive attitude and enthusiasm our students have returned with, and single out Year 10 students, in particular, who have really impressed everyone with how determined they are to rise to the challenge of GCSEs and secure the best grades they are each capable of across the curriculum. And, with it now being 2024, the Class of 2024, have impressed with their attendance at the newly launched Period 0 and Period 6 intervention sessions – well done Year 11.
Clubs, activities and extra-curricular opportunities should all now be back up and running, so please do encourage your daughter to revisit what is on offer, and perhaps, as a new year’s resolution opt to try a new enrichment activity. On this theme, I am hugely grateful to Ms Godwin and Miss Morris for hosting our Duke of Edinburgh Awards Evening last night and I continue to be blown away by how successful and popular the scheme is, at Bronze, Silver and Gold. Please do encourage, or consider signing up, your daughter to take part, I would love to reach a stage where every single Rosebery student completes at least the Bronze Award.
This week has also seen the Elephant’s Tea Party take place today for Year 7 who have been helped to reflect on and discuss the difficult topic of bereavement in tutor time throughout the week. More details about this important topic can be found via the link HERE.
Year 12 students are now in their assessment window, so well done to them for the work that has gone into prepping for these, and to our Health & Social Care, Applied Science and Human Biology Sixth Form students, who are in the middle of sitting public exams – we hope these have gone, or will go, well. Year 11 students are also in the middle of their mock MFL orals, as the rest of the school gears up for their upcoming mid-year assessments, in addition to upcoming house events and many are busy rehearsing for the school production, Sister Act!
Finally, we are very pleased to be welcoming Julian Drinkall, GLF Schools’ new CEO, to Rosebery on Tuesday - we are all very much looking forward to his visit.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
HEAD OF SCHOOL
This January we’ve welcomed to Rosebery Mrs Garner in the PE department, replacing Mrs Manley, and Ms Argyle in the MFL department, replacing Mrs Andrews.

We are located in a residential area; therefore, please do not drop your child at the school gate, as local roads are busy and become congested regularly, but instead drop some way from the school for your child to walk the last part of the journey.

This week saw Year 7 participating in the 'Elephant's Tea Party.' During each form time this week students explored how we perceive and experience grief differently, whilst highlighting the importance of memories. We marked the end of the week with a tea party, where students created memory bracelets as a tool to help with treasuring and talking about the memories the hold of someone they have lost or who is no longer in their lives. We are extremely proud of the maturity and respect students have shown during a sensitive week, especially during difficult and insightful conversations. Should you wish to find further information to support in continuing these conversations at home, please head to our Year 7 website which is linked HERE.

What a joy it has been to welcome back Year 8 over the past couple of weeks and we are so pleased with the way in which they have conducted themselves since the start of term. It has been a huge source of pride to see the number of merits awarded across the year group, highlighting their hard work and engagement from the year so far.
This week, Mr Harvey has spoken to Year 8 about using the New Year both as a reset but also as a time to revisit goals and resolutions. This is something we have been working on in form time and there have been lots of thoughtful goals that Year 8 have begun to chase already in their lessons. We have also highlighted the importance of acting with kindness and integrity both inside and outside of school. This will be a thread that we will explore throughout the year, so please do continue these conversations at home.
This promises to be a jam-packed term for Year 8 and more information will be released in the coming weeks about Curriculum Refinement Evening once this is confirmed. We look forward to seeing all our families for this evening and will confirm arrangements in due course. For now, we hope Year 8 continue their bright start to 2024!

Mr Pingree - Head of Year 8
Miss Morris - Deputy Head of Year 8
Welcome back! It has been lovely having Year 9 back in the building and it is clear everyone has had a lovely Christmas break due to how tired everyone was feeling. But we have made it to the end of our first complete week back and Miss Fielding and I couldn’t be prouder of how Year 9 have started this term.
In our assembly this week we focussed on setting manageable goals. For Year 9, this is their final term in Lower School at Rosebery, and our focus continues to be on being brave, taking risks and setting meaningful goals (our biggest goal being our upcoming curriculum refinement of subjects from Year 9 into Year 10). It is now crucial that Year 9 put everything into their learning in order to aid their choices in a few months time.
Finally, we are excited to launch a theatre trip to go and see Back to the Future on Thursday 18 April. Keep an eye out for an email on this soon. We are so excited about what this term has on offer for Year 9. Happy New Year!
9CX: Evie C - for consistently being helpful and kind to all members of the form group.
9CY: Tilly S - for her effort and contributions in Drama this week, keep it up!
9EX: Mia W - for her positive start back this term, receiving the most merits in 9EX – well done!
9EY: Lucy S - for her consistent hard work and effort in all subjects.
9MX: Emily F - for her excellent contributions in citizenship lessons.
9MY: Nefeli T - for her increased efforts within both Drama and PE.
9PX: Jenny H - for her numerous performances at the Christmas Concert.
9PY: Chloe T - for trying her best in all her lessons, especially PE - well done!
Mr Waight - Head of Year 9
Miss Fielding - Deputy Head of Year 9
Welcome back! We are so pleased with the way that Year 10 have returned after the Christmas break. Students have come back to lessons refreshed and ready for a new term and we are so delighted by the number of teachers who have sought us out to tell us how much they love teaching our Year 10 students. This was shown on Wednesday in particular, when a vast number of students were awarded 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or even 9 merits in the course of a single day – an incredible achievement!
To this end, our form times and assembly this week have focused on kindness and integrity – two values that we hope to instill into all Rosebery students as part of their time here. We have spoken about the need to be kind to ourselves by establishing routines that set us up to succeed, not be burdened by demerits or detentions. We spoke about the need to be kind to our support network of classmates, teachers and families so that we can have a secure basis of support when things get tough. In addition, we spoke about the need to demonstrate integrity by doing the right thing, even when your friends tell you otherwise – all with a little help from Harry Potter (do ask them to tell you!).
On Thursday night we were able to celebrate the achievements of all the students who successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, plus the people who supported them: you at home, Ms Godwin and Miss Morris. We were so proud of all of them! Extra congratulations go to Kitty Y 10PX and Prathyusha N 10PX, who received special awards for their teamwork and resilience, and to Iris A 10CX, Regan P 10CX, Jess K 10MX and Isabella G 10MY, who spoke so beautifully at the event.
As you can see, Team Year 10 are still riding high from the projects that were planned and delivered to the local community before Christmas. Form groups elected to make Christmas cards and gift boxes and donate them to local care homes, charities and Epsom hospital. This is the first opportunity we’ve had to recognise some of the fantastic work that has gone into making this happen via the first 'Stars of the Week' of 2024. We hope you enjoy and we look forward to what we can achieve this term.
10CX: Rachel N, Mia H, Regan P, Gianna C, Ela A – for giving up their time to deliver Christmas gifts to the Children's Ward at Epsom Hospital as part of 10CX's community project.
10CY: Mia H - for always being a polite and friendly presence in form time, for having good attendance and for always doing all the right things day-to-day. It doesn't go unnoticed!
10EX: Emily A and Esme S - for great work when discussing first aid in PDC last term, giving brilliant advice and demonstrating the recovery position.
10EY: Chloe H – for her positive attitude back in English since returning to school.
10MX: Ashlee M - for getting involved in the First Aid topic in PDC last term and volunteering to demonstrate the recovery position.
10MY: Raya A-A - for showing kindness and responsibility.
10PY: Elena T - for delivering the cards to the care home and also because she has been nominated by three other girls who were very impressed with her drama mock. Kay C - For delivering the cards to the care home and for being an excellent ambassador for the school during the Robotics Challenge.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
Welcome back to Year 11! Students have come back with such determination and this has been fantastic to see. Year 11 have had a busy week back as our intervention periods 0 and 6 started this week for Year 11. They have adapted so well to the change with some students learning from as early as 8.00am - what a triumphant start. It has been a pleasure hearing from teachers about how driven Year 11 are in lessons, which demonstrates what a fantastic year group they really are.
We have lots going on in Year 11, with MFL Speaking mocks and NEAs underway as Drama students are set to perform next week for parents. Year 11 are throwing everything into their final term at Rosebery and we couldn't be prouder of them. Our students know they have to make it count as this final term is busy but the end goal will be so rewarding.
Next week we will begin sharing yearbook information with students as we ask for them to start sharing photographs from their years at Rosebery from trips such as DofE as well as Activities Week. Although there is a lot going on, Year 11 are always so positive and supportive of each other and we look forward to our final term together.
11CX: Grace W - for starting 2024 with a wonderful positive attitude.
11CY: Mia G - for an excellent start to 2024 and working so hard in all of her subjects.
11EX: Connie B - for her excellent efforts in Sociology.
11EY: Evie A - for making a positive start to the new year.

It has been incredible to see the wonderful things that students have been up to over their time away, in particular those who have been performing in numerous shows leading up to Christmas. I've heard wonderful things about the pantomime at Dorking Halls, in which Amy S 8CX and Kate S 8MX played a part. I've been given a glowing review by our very own Mrs Blake. Congratulations to you both on your efforts and dedication to a wonderful performance!
Mr Pingree - Head of Year 8

I am delighted to introduce the new Junior Leadership team for 2024. We are looking forward to seeing what they accomplish in the upcoming year in collaboration with the Deputy Head Girls. Congratulations to all the students who applied. The decision was very challenging due to the exceptional quality of the applications.

Could this be the year to try something new? All our current PE clubs will start from Monday 8 January (please see the timetable below for all available clubs taking place this half term). Please note that there are some changes (e.g. Monday Rugby has been removed).
There is no need to sign up and clubs are open to all students.
As the weather remains cold, we would like to remind parents/guardians of the school PE kit. Students should all wear the Rosebery polo and have a choice of either the Rosebery skort or shorts which can be purchased from Stevensons. In addition, students can purchase a Rosebery quarter zip jumper which should also be purchased from Stevensons. At this time of year, we also advice students bring a navy pair of sports leggings and base layer top which can be added as an additional layer.
Students will be expected to go outside when the facilities are safe to use and therefore should be packing appropriately for their outdoor lessons.
Miss Croft - Head of PE

On Wednesday 13 December, the Year 7 netball A team played against St Andrews in a great match. The girls were excellent and had great teamwork throughout the game, with some fantastic shooting from Phoebe B 7CY and Amelie F 7CX, which led to Amelie being awarded Player of the Match. In the end, the girls won 7-1 and I was so impressed to see how their gameplay has improved throughout the term. A reminder to keep it up and keep coming to training and you will get better and better.
Also on 13 December, the Year 8 netball A team played St Andrews in a very competitive but exciting match. The girls played so well as a team but sadly lost 13-12 in the end. Nevertheless, our girls played amazingly as a team. The Player of the Match went to India R 8CY for her excellent shooting. Well done girls, keep it up into next term!
Miss Fielding - PE Teacher

On Wednesday, our Year 7 hockey team travelled to Notre Dame School to play a very competitive game. Unfortunately the girls lost 4-1, however, their sprits never dropped. The girls battled hard and it all paid off when Sienna C 7MY got the ball in the D and scored. There was some excellent goalkeeping from Izzy C 7MY and some excellent defence from Caitlyn K 7CX who was also the Opposition's Player of the Match. I am so proud with how much the girls have developed over this year and for some members of the team this was there first ever hockey match. Well done girls. I am so proud of you. Keep up the hard work.
Miss Fielding - PE Teacher
On Tuesday, an incredible effort was put forth by the Year 7 football team in their latest English Schools' FA Cup game against Riddlesdown Collegiate. Despite the unfortunate outcome, we are so proud of the team's resilience and determination towards the game. They displayed remarkable teamwork and skills, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to equalise in the space one minute before the half time whistle blew (thanks to two fantastic goals from Neve O 7MY)! Riddlesdown came out fighting in the second half and produced a great performance, ultimately leading to a defeat for Rosebery for the first time this season.
While they may not have secured a victory, it is important to celebrate and congratulate the team for doing Rosebery School proud!
