It has been a busy old week at Rosebery, as for different cohorts some key events are either upcoming or underway! Nearly half of Year 8 students have submitted their Curriculum Refinement choices for Year 9, the deadline for which is Wednesday 1 May, and we are grateful for parents who joined their virtual parents’ evening appointments yesterday. Year 9 students are due to start meeting with senior leaders next week, to agree which subjects they wish to continue with, as GCSE options, as they progress into Year 10.
Of course, our Classes of 2024, continue to gear up for their now imminent summer public examinations, with GCSEs and A Levels starting in early and mid-May respectively. Indeed, the Year 11 students have conducted themselves brilliantly in their MFL Speaking Exams over the last week or so and are due to complete their Art NEAs at the start of next week.
In turn, for our Year 10 cohort, who have been brilliant at sorting a range of excellent work experience placements (thank you families), the penny is starting to drop that in 12 months’ time, it will be them who are about to be sitting their final GCSE Exams – no pressure ladies, but perhaps time to knuckle down and focus, ahead of your end of year mocks.
There are many other highlights from the week that follow in the remainder of Rosebery News, but a couple of standouts to highlight here include a huge congratulations to those students who took part in the Mini Marathon, as part of the London Marathon, with thanks to Mrs Ringer for organising and to our Year 13 Sixth Form Coaches, who marked the end of their peer coaching cycle with a lovely celebration on Wednesday – many thanks to Mrs Coombes, our Director of Coaching, for overseeing this.
Next week sees the beginning of our Duke of Edinburgh ‘Season’ with our Gold Team heading out on their practice expedition in the Peak District (which will be followed by a qualifying expedition, later in June in the Pyrenees Mountains, in France). Team Silver start with their practice expedition in the North Downs on May 13 – with a record 70 students due to take part. Huge thanks to Ms Godwin and Miss Morris for leading our DofE Programme, and special mention and thanks to Mrs Watson who is supporting them this year.
Finally, Mrs Spencer, our LRC Manager, has asked that I finish by plugging our KS3 Book Fair, which takes place on Tuesday next week. Students in Years 7 to 9 are invited to come purchase new books as discounted prices, either during break, lunch or after school in the LRC - however, they will need to do so via card payment. Please do contact Mrs Spencer if purchasing via card payment is an issue for your daughter and we will see if we can find an alternative solution.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Year 7 were privileged to receive a thought-provoking assembly, led by our Junior Leadership Team, to kick-off Environment Week. The assembly prompted meaningful discussions about the urgent need for change and generated creative ideas as each student contemplated their role in fostering a positive change. From reducing single-use plastics to planting trees, our students are committed to make a tangible impact on our planet!
Looking ahead, Activities Week is fast approaching!
Activities Week promises an array of fun activities, including a trip to Whipsnade Zoo, where students will delve into the wonders of wildlife conservation. Following this, they will spend a day in the Geography department, where students will participate in a range of activities, from looking at ecosystems to art creations based on their visit to the zoo. On the final day, a dynamic team-building day awaits, including a giant inflatable obstacle course! Payments can be made under 'Y7 Activities Week 24' on ParentPay.
Finally, we would like to congratulate Christina S 7EX who represented England at the World Shotokan Championships last week in Bulgaria and won GOLD for her age category - we are so proud, well done!! Another well done goes to the Year 7 Football Cup Squad, who participated in the U12s League Finals yesterday. As the winners of the Leatherhead District, they faced the Guildford County team from the Guildford District to have an overall winner – a HUGE congratulations to Rosebery who came out on top as 6-1 winners!

Another week seems to have absolutely flown by and, as ever,
Year 8 have been working hard and throwing themselves into their learning and extracurricular activities. The key highlight of this week was our virtual parents' evening, and it was a genuine pleasure to be able to discuss the progress that Year 8 are making in their lessons; I hope the conversations with staff felt just as purposeful for you as parents/carers.
This week has also been about the topic of the environment, and we were lucky to have an assembly led by the environment JLT surrounding this topic. It is truly shocking to hear about some of the impacts that we as humans have on the natural world. I feel assured though, that we have wonderful individuals like our JLT (and many more around the school) who are aiming to make a positive change to the world around them and encourage their peers to do the same.
I am also very privileged this week to congratulate Nicole B 8CX for her recent efforts to her karate outside of school. Over the Easter break, Nicole represented England at the WSF World Shotokan Championships in Bulgaria. This is not only a phenomenal achievement in itself, but Nicole also went on to win the silver medal for the competition (another fantastic achievement)! This is not only testament to your commitment to your sport, but also your hard work and we couldn’t be prouder of you.
Finally, just a reminder that our deadline for the Curriculum Refinement choices is on Wednesday 1 May. If you need any support with this before then, please do contact us so we can ensure that this is completed smoothly.

It is a joy to see so many activities and achievements that Year 9 are getting involved in outside of school. The stars of the week highlight many of these and demonstrate how our students continue to buy into our ethos of being brave.
Curriculum Refinement meetings started today and students have been given information on an appointment card, as well as preparing themselves for this conversation by evaluating their Year 9 journeys in form time. If your child has missed this, please tell them to speak to their form tutor so that they are prepared for the meeting. During this time students will confirm their options for Year 10.
A reminder that we have our Year 9 Graduation on Wednesday 22 May, where students will be immersed in off-timetable activities to celebrate their lower school journey, ending in a silent disco back in the school hall later from 5.00pm. Last Saturday 10 of our Year 10 students took part in the mini marathon, running 2.6 km of the London Marathon course with the support of their family and friends. In addition, the GCSE Drama students performed their pieces in a parent showcase on Monday night and completed their assessments just today. This week has also been the GCSE Speaking Examinations for Year 11, but also for a few Year 10s who are undertaking the impressive task of gaining an extra language qualification alongside their full-time studies. As this is Year 10's first on-site parents’ evening, they may not know that they are also expected to join the conversations! This is so that both you and they can hear the important feedback from teachers as to their progress and the next steps they cna take between now and next year.

10PY: Lola S - for being generous in sharing her work experience placement with others.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10

One more full week to go! Year 11 have been amazing with all the work they have put in, especially those that have completed their MFL oral exams (I have heard some glowing reports, which has been fantastic to hear). It has been a wonderful week, with yearbook form photos being taken to mark the change over their 5 years here at Rosebery, as well as 40 Year 11 students going to see Jekyll and Hyde for some last minute revision. We also want to wish all our Year 11 Art students the best of luck next week with their exams on Monday and Tuesday.
In assembly on Friday, we went through all the plans for the last full week, as well as exams and their exam leave. These slides are available to Year 11 on Google Classroom, but can also be found HERE for your reference, as well as the letter that was sent home this week. Students will be getting their individual timetables next week, but I have also attached all the exams for GCSEs HERE.
Year 11 have a very busy week next week, with their last day of timetabled lessons on Thursday 2 May, and English and Maths immersion days taking place on Friday 3 and Tuesday 7 May. These days are so important for revision and for finishing off what has been a great year before exam leave starts on Friday 8 May.
As I have continuously said, we are incredibly proud of Year 11 and all their hard work. We go on about it a lot, but having a good work/life balance is so important now more than ever to get students through the exam season.
So, enjoy your weekend and we look forward to seeing students back for their final full week!

For students, we chose Annabelle P 7CY as our winner, as her photograph of a waterfall in Cornwall was magical and beautifully showed the water cascading down the steep gorge. Her description of the location was in depth, with the title 'Peace and power'. We loved the idea of the wish bands.
Our student runner-up was Emily K 7PX, with a strong title of 'Holding back the tide' and a lovely description of what the process of hydraulic action is (her picture demonstrated this perfectly). The angle of the photo was very distinctive and portrayed the sheer power of erosion in the southwest whereby destructive waves dominate the coastline due to the large Atlantic Fetch.
We chose Mr Brew as the staff winner because his photo of the cliff not only showed marine erosion but also the variation of sedimentary rock. We really liked the fact that it was taken with his film camera, accentuating the definitive features of the arch. The description of the Green Bridge of Wales was in depth, and we learned about the geology on the South Pembrokeshire Coast in Wales.
Ms Hunter was chosen as the staff category runner-up as we really loved both entries showing the great effort that was put into the photography and description. The photo taken in Canada showed the vast, natural landscape of the Canadian Rockies and the power of water in creating the meander called the Big Bend. The photo of The Needles in the Isle of Wight illustrates the erosive features of this stretch of coastline in the south. Additionally, we really liked the sharp contrast between the sky and the sea, further enhancing the white stacks.
'Peace and power' - Annabelle P 7CY
'The Green Bridge of Wales' - Mr Brew
'Holding back the tide' - Emily K 7PX
'The Needles' - Ms Hunter
'Big Bend in Canada' - Ms Hunter

Last Friday, we were fortunate enough to have both our Year 9 and Year 10 netball teams compete in the Surrey Netball Finals, held at Surrey Sports Park. Both teams underwent a busy day playing six matches each against other local schools in the hope of winning. Both teams displayed excellent attacking movement on the court, with some great interceptions from Rosie G 10MY and Charlotte H 9MX. There was impeccable shooting from Jemima K 9MX and Freya B 10PX, with the support of Sophia T 10EX and Jemima S 9CX feeding in the D.
Despite the long day, both teams placed fifth overall! Well done to all that were involved, you were fabulous. And, as a bonus, some of our students were able to get a photograph with some of the Harlequin Players (Jo Marler and Marcus Smith) who were also training at the Sports Park!
