It has been a delight to welcome back our students to the start of the summer term, even if the weather has made it feel like a return to the autumn!
There is a clear and obvious focus this term on the forthcoming GCSE and A Level exams, and we continue to encourage students in these year groups to take advantage of the intervention sessions before and after school and to plan for the fact that these sessions will continue once the exams begin, along with many of the timetabled lessons, when they do not clash with the exams themselves. Google Classroom is full of resources to support students with their revision at home – please alert your daughter’s teacher if you do not feel that she has access to these vital materials. The application and focus of the Year 11 students on the Humanities Day on Wednesday, and as they have started their French and Spanish speaking exams at the end of this week, have been impressive, which bodes extremely well for the challenges ahead.
It will not be long before Year 10 students reach the top of the pillar school and we have been hugely impressed with the way in which the PE students have worked on their PEP NEA during their drop-down day, and how the Drama students in this year group have worked so hard on their devised pieces in their off-timetable sessions this week.
This term is also full of curricular and extra-curricular enrichment opportunities, culminating in Activities Week for Years 7-9 and work experience for Years 10 and 12 at the end of term. It has been terrific to see how hard the Year 9 Business Studies students are working on their marketing projects, selling such a range of products each day in the quad with some very compelling entrepreneurial strategies! Students in this year group have also enjoyed a very enjoyable trip to Harry Potter Studios this week, whilst Year 12 students have been planning their forthcoming, and very challenging, Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition in the Pyrenees. In our experience the students who throw themselves into sporting, musical, theatrical and creative enrichment activities enjoy school much more, make supportive friendships beyond their immediate teaching groups, with higher levels of attendance and academic attainment. I would be delighted if you take time to have a look at the summer enrichment programme with your daughter and encourage her to get involved in something new this term.
Many students have not returned to school in the correct uniform this week, and I am grateful for your support in ensuring, in particular, that your daughter is not wearing trainers to school and that she leaves rings, necklaces, and all but one stud earring at home each day. False eyelashes and nails from the holidays should now be removed too, please.
Finally, we extend a very warm welcome to Miss Hibbitt who has joined the Maths department this week.
Have a lovely weekend.

Our Year 7 students have returned from the Easter break refreshed and raring to go! It has been a joy to visit their lessons this week and witness the maturity, discipline and the positivity they have demonstrated in their learning.
The Summer term means that there have been some changes to the extra-curricular rota, so please do encourage your child to try something new and embrace all opportunities on offer to them this term! Similarly, please be aware that all PE lessons are now due to be outside as students begin their summer sports. Although we are willing for the sun to continue shining, the temperatures may still be a little on the cooler side so please ensure that your child has the PE kit suitable for both warm and cooler temperatures, a water bottle and we recommend suncream too.
As always, it is so lovely to hear about our students' achievements outside of school. We want to recognise Neve O 7MY (top) who represented Chelsea FC in the Ganafote Cup that was held in Spain. Chelsea had multiple victories, however they finally succumbed to defeat against Inter Milan. We are so proud of your success, well done Neve!
We would also like to congratulate Pippa W 7EY (bottom) who travelled to Jersey for a gymnastics competition. Pippa displayed real talent throughout which ultimately earned her a bronze medal for the vault - great work, we are so impressed!
7CX: Caitlyn K - for taking part in the Mini Marathon taking place this weekend – good luck.
7CY: Ciara M - for making it through her recent dance audition.
7EX: Amelia O - thank you for sharing pictures, with the form, from your amazing performance during the Easter holidays.
7EY: Pippa W - for coming 3rd in her Gymnastics competition over the Easter holidays.
7PX: Hailey L - for her hard work in lessons, particularly Geography.
7PY: Amber C - for taking part in a park run and coming 10th out of 102 people and the first girl to cross the finish line.
7MX: Neive H and Annabelle S - for acting with integrity and for always doing the right thing.

Welcome back! I hope you all managed to have a restful Easter break and that Year 8 are raring to go for the final term of the year.
It has been lovely to welcome Year 8 back this week, and in their assembly, Mr Harvey delivered the thought-provoking story of Russ Cook, a man who set himself the challenge of running the length of Africa for charity. The message delivered was focused on determination, ambition and perseverance in the face of adversity, which couldn’t fit any more perfectly with what we aim to inspire for our Year 8 students.
This week we’ve also started two new form time initiatives that go hand-in-hand with one another. Our study skill sessions are aiming to arm our students with the most effective strategies for revision, which will benefit going into the end of year exams and well into the future. The first session this week was on Cornell note-taking, and students practiced this brilliantly, putting the history of nursery rhymes into the format, before practicing with something of their own next week.
In tandem with this, we’ve started some sessions on wellbeing that are designed to support the importance of exams in making sure our students are taking care of their own wellbeing and balancing this. As we get further into these sessions, we will be recommending different strategies or activities for students to try to support their wellbeing, so please do ask them about this.
Finally, it’s a great pleasure to see the number of students taking on the Silver AIM Award Challenge and seeing the lovely targets that Year 8 have set themselves to prove their ambition, integrity and motivation. It makes me so excited to see just how confident this year group are in taking on a challenge, and I look forward to seeing the accomplishments that come with this.
Have a lovely weekend!

What a difference a two-week break makes! Year 9 have returned to the Summer term with a fantastic attitude, this being reflected by the 879 merits awarded this week, well done!
On Thursday we took 100 students to the Harry Potter Studios in London for an interactive workshop about the film series' costumes/scripts and then a guided tour of all things Harry Potter. Both staff and students had great fun and really enjoyed the immersive experience. Students were amazing ambassadors for Rosebery and it was a joy to hear so many compliments during the afternoon.
Mr Harvey led our assembly this week with a focus on grit, determination and ambition through the story of Russ Cook, a man who set himself the challenge of running the length of Africa for charity. There are similarities between the journey ahead for Year 9 students and Cook’s amazing achievement in that there will be bumps along the road. It was his positive mindset and willingness to not give up which allowed him to be so successful. Although Year 9 are yet to start their GCSE journey, this message should be one that stays with them for when they need that positive boost.
Although it's not quite the length of Africa, some Year 9 students are taking part in a mini marathon in London this weekend, so we would like to wish the following students all the best:
Alvina W 9CX, Jasmine W 9EX, Aaliyah-Zaina R 9EY, Ava T 9MX, Olivia D 9MY, Evie T 9PY and Orla U 9PY.
9CX: Alvina W - for her involvement in the mini-marathon on Saturday.
9CY: Charlotte C - for top effort on Sparx Maths (top of the league!).
9EX: Mia W - for such a good start to the term!
9EY: Leah F - for her kindness in trying to revive a newt that got stuck in our form room.
9MX: Carrie B - for her excellent work in Art.
9MY: Tt C - for her positive start back to the Summer term.
9PX: Beth M - for helping me out and for being my Science Technician assistant.
9PY: Amelia B - for running a half-marathon over the Easter holidays.

Welcome back! We hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and are ready for the Summer term ahead.
For those who participated in the Ski Trip over the Easter holidays, we hope you had an amazing time! The staff who accompanied the trip said how brilliant the students were, and we hope this was a chance to make many amazing memories.
The term has certainly started with a bang, with Year 10s involved in drop-down days for both PE and Drama this week, for which we would like to thank all the staff involved. In addition, it was a pleasure to visit Year 10 in lessons this week and see their hard work in action all around the school. Mr Hewett and I enjoyed hearing their thoughts on the intersections of crime and class in Sociology, and seeing some of the amazing work on display in Art. These are some very talented students!
Finally, as it is the start of term, there is our usual ‘reset’. Like New Year, the start of term is the time to focus on shedding old habits and on doing the right thing each day. Thank you to all the students for looking so smart in their correct uniform and to you at home for supporting them in meeting our standards for this – particularly for nails and jewellery.
10CX: Sophia E - for always being so positive and polite in form time. Your smile always brightens up the room!
10CY: Tilly M - for always being a pleasure to have in form time and for being proactive in organising and logging her work experience placement.
10EX: Grace B - for always quietly doing the right thing, and for still being on zero demerits after two terms - well done!
10EY: Emma W – for your improved effort in lessons that is being noticed by your teachers.
10MX: Grace Cu - for excellent work in PE lessons in March. Well done!
10MY: Sofilia K - well done for maintaining a a consistent high level of achievement in Maths since September with over twenty merits in this one subject area.
10PX: Joanna D - for always contributing really well in PDC lessons and promoting positive discussions with the whole class or small groups.
10PY: Diana J - for being so proactive in seeking out her work experience.
Ms Newman - Head of Year 10
Mr Hewett - Deputy Head of Year 10
A huge welcome back to Year 11 after the Easter break! I can't believe we are at the end of the first week back already, with now only 2 full weeks left for Year 11 before exam leave begins. Year 11 have come back so determined and driven to push themselves as much as they can before they leave.
We started the week with Mr Styles leading our assembly, reminding students about the actions they need to take to achieve and feel as prepared as they can be for exam season. Year 11 definitely have the right attitude to achieve what they want. It was wonderful to hear and see Year 11 students being so engaged during Humanities Day on Wednesday (a very different day being in the same subject for 5 hours), they did this so well. That being said, intervention is still going on for Year 11 students so please do encourage them at home as much as possible to attend the last couple of sessions they have. It is so important that they make the most of every opportunity they have before exam leave begins.
Next week, Year 11 will be having their form photos taken for their yearbook. The date of their photo will be uploaded onto the Year 11 Google Classroom page. Please encourage students to be in form on time to ensure they are a part of this as it cannot be changed once registration has passed. As I outlined before, please ensure you have purchased a yearbook and/or hoodie before the deadline in the letter that was sent previously. We cannot add to this order once the deadline has passed on Friday 24 May, and we have to meet the threshold of 150 orders for the order to be fulfilled. It does serve as a lovely reminder when they look back on their school experience.
Finally, the MFL Speaking Exams have started this week and will continue into next week. We wish every single student the best of luck for these exams!
We hope Year 11 have a lovely weekend.
11CX: Jessie C - for being hardworking and great work in English intervention.
11CY: Isobel W - for being focused and hard working.
11EX: Alice T - for being focused and determined.
11EY: Rhea K - for her hard work and determination.
11MX: Gia I - for being disciplined.
11MY: Grace O - for her resilience and determination.
11PX: Lexie W - for her determination and discipline in all subjects.
11PY: Emma K - for her resilience and determination since returning from the Easter break.

Congratulations to Tila F 9CY who, at the beginning of March, travelled to Telford to compete in the English Championships for the first time. Unfortunately, she had been suffering with a hamstring injury so she was only able to compete in bars and beam. Just being there, though, competing amongst international gymnasts, was an amazing experience for Tila. The following weekend she competed in Wiltshire as a practice for her regional grades at the end of the month.
Again, she was still protecting an injury and so wasn't able to compete in all pieces. However, she managed to get a silver medal on beam and a bronze on bars.
Finally, last weekend, she competed at the South East Grades, where she took her last grade (performance 4). Although she was not expecting to come near the top as she had only just recently started to vault and tumble again, she surprised everyone by winning, as well as coming first on beam, first on floor, second on vault and third on bars.
Tila has also qualified for the National Finals in May where she will represent the South East region. Congratulations Tila!

What a week we had in Les Deux Alpes, with fantastic weather, super students and wonderful memories! Six days of skiing was made better with beautiful conditions, and while we may have missed the sun for a couple of days, we could not complain about the amount of snow we had, with many runs having more powder than a bluebird day in January.
The week saw early mornings, plenty of skiing and a busy evening schedule of activities. The progression made by each and every student within their ski lessons was what was most impressive. From the beginners who had never experienced a set of skis, to the advanced who were whizzing up and down the glacier runs (even pushing me to my limit when it came to speed). Evening entertainment was made up of hot chocolates, crepes, a night of competitive bowling and a typical Rosebery movie night (including a large stash of pick-and-mix from the Sherpa store next to the hotel).
I am so proud of each and every student who attended, however, we must celebrate those who received an award from the week.
Congratulations to the following:
Biggest cheerleading - Jessica K 10MX
Best humour - Mina J 10PX
Best double act - Hollie W 11PY and Imogen W 11CY

I must also take this opportunity to thank the amazing group of staff we had with us. Thank you to Mrs Jones, Miss Godwin, Miss Reilly, Miss Morris, Miss Monk & Mr Pingree; the trip wouldn't have been able to run without all of your help and support and I'm so grateful for you for giving up your time in the Easter holidays. I hope both staff and students treasure the week in their memories for a long time as I am certain I will.
All photos will be shared with students soon.

Huge congratulations to our Rosebery Robotics team: Iris A 10CX, Grace B 10MX, Hannah B 10CX, Kay C 10PY, Isabella G 10MY, Sophie L 10EY and Grecia P-M 10EY for their performance in the First Tech Robotics Regional Competition on Saturday 23 March. Here is a description of the day in their own words:
On Saturday 23 March, the Rosebery Robotics team headed off to the Harris Academy for our first ever First Tech Robotics competition, which runs across the UK. We arrived with our robot (BerryBot), team jackets and a lot of excitement that we were finally here after preparing for so long! We went around the Team Pit Area to meet some of the other teams, work on our code and scope out the arena before being summoned into an office to show off our robot and share his story with the judges! It was amazing for our team to be able to share all the funny moments and good times we had while building BerryBot, and the judges definitely enjoyed the cheesy jokes that were sneaked into our speech.
After judging, our robot, team prop, controller and driver station were all inspected for any faults (and also to check it wouldn't catch on fire). Thankfully, we passed the test and were free to move on to the qualifying matches. We had decided that Grace should drive the robot in the arena (as she was miles better at it than the rest of us) but we all took turns going into the driving box to help while the rest of us cheered our team on from the stands. We made lots of new friends and got on especially well with the team from Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls.
We had been nervous after we saw some of the other teams’ robots, but after all 23 qualifying matches had taken place we had won three out of our five games and were placed 5th out of 18 teams. At this point, the top four ranked teams could form fixed alliances of three teams for the semi-finals. We were very happy to be picked for the 2nd ranked alliance by Langley Park School, and we were joined by our friends from Woolwich to complete our team of three. After an intense best of 3 semi-final match, there was much celebration in the Driver Pit as the news came in: our alliance was into the finals!
Unfortunately, our alliance couldn't quite repeat that feat in the final, however we were absolutely delighted to be awarded the title of Regional Finalists, win the Connect Award for our fundraiser and survive the 10 hours of competition in our first ever year of entering. We had an absolutely brilliant time and we can’t wait to come back next year!
We would like to thank Ms Watson and Mrs Massoudi for their continuous enthusiasm and support (we are so grateful for all you have done) as well as our anonymous donor for the amazing jackets and everyone who participated in and came to watch the Teacher Benchball event - we couldn't have done it without you!
