Ways to Support Your Child's Learning
Starfall.com is a great website for students to learn the alphabet. As your child uses this website, please make sure they say the sound as they hit the button for each letter. For example, when a child clicks on the letter /t/, they should say the sound out loud.
Please have your child practice writing numerals at home.
Ask your child to sing the Alphardy song for you!
Ask your child about his or her favorite Star Book and be sure to keep reading your child's old favorites at home!
Ask your child to tell you about how we use our whole bodies to listen to our classmates.
Talk about the daily weather with your child. Talk about the forecast for the week.
September Star of the Day Show and Tell Activity
Classroom Update
We had a great start to the school year! We have learned our class routines, played, met our classmates, and learned some new songs. We are working on some beginning of the year assessments on numbers, letters and letter sounds. We are off to a fabulous start! We look forward to working with you and your child this year!
Math
In Math, we are learning how to sort in lots of different ways and to tell what our sorting rule is. We are also focusing on counting and matching numerals zero to ten. We are practicing writing the numerals now, too.
Language Arts
We are learning letter sounds!
In Readers' Workshop, We Are Storybook Readers! We look at the pictures and tell the story. We talk like the characters, make the words match the pictures, and try to use some of the exact words that the author uses.
Social Studies and Science
In our All About Me unit, we are learning what makes us and each of our friends special—we are not just what we look like, we are what we care about, what we like to do, what we feel, and more. We are learning how to listen with our whole bodies.
During the fall months we will be exploring the weather in our science unit. We will talk about the effects of the sun, patterns in local weather, and the use of weather forecasting to prepare and respond to severe weather. At the end of the unit, students will work in groups to design, build, and test a shelter structure to protect an "animal" from the weather. During this unit, students will take a field trip to the Glastonbury Planetarium to view the "One World, One Sky" program.
