Ways to Support Your Child's Learning

Review of reading numbers 1-100 may be of help at this time.

Talk with your child about how people, places, and things are alike and different around the world. Talk about what you have learned about this when you have lived in or visited different communities.

Ask your child to tell you all about the zoo animal habitat he/she created. What did they like about this project? What was difficult?

As the school year begins to wrap up, ask your child what they most liked learning about.

What does your child like about our school? What do they wish was different?

Classroom Update

Language Arts

Your child will receive a formal assessment on their reading level. The goal at the end of kindergarten is level D. All of the children will also be assessed on their sight word knowledge.

Math

In Math, we are working on addition and subtraction through 10 and counting to 100. All students will be assessed on their math skills at the end of the year.

Social Studies and Science

In our unit, All About Our World, we are looking for signs of spring and discussing how our behavior changes with the season. We are also learning about ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle to keep our environment healthy.

In the spring we will study the science unit "Stayin' Alive." Students learn what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. They will study the relationship between their needs and where they live. They will discuss how humans can reduce their impact on the earth. One engineering task activity will have students create habitats for zoo animals. The habitats will resemble the animal’s natural biome and meet their basic needs. These lessons will provide students opportunities to research, design, build, and explain their work.
