I am one of the two reading teachers at Blacklick Elementary. I enjoy working with a variety of students in their journey to unlock the tools needed to decode and understand written text. I work with students to identify the strategies active readers use to decode and comprehend different types of texts. I work with students in small groups both in and out of the classroom, as well as one-on-one in Reading Recovery.

Reading books with your child can support language development and learning in many ways. Incorporating some of these tips can help develop your child's reading skills.

For Beginning Readers

1. Provide a consistent time and place to read together.

2. Read at least 4 nights a week for at least 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Listen to your child read.

4. Praise your child for correcting himself and using clues to figure out words on his own.

5. Make time to read aloud together often.

6. Keep a variety of reading materials available.

For Advanced Readers

1. Notice interesting words and use them in conversation.

2. Read with expression.

3. Explore non-fiction books and their features.

4. Compare and Contrast books.

5. Explore multiple books from the same author.
