Effect of Treatment on Physiological Response to Unpredictable Stimuli

What we are studying

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the changes in the startle reflex over time in healthy volunteers

Time Commitment

Two study visits lasting approximately one hour each

Individuals must have no psychiatric disorders such anxiety, a psychotic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, or individuals experiencing a current depressive episode.


$200 total ($100 for each study visit)

General Timeline

  • Screening Period: 1 phone call to determine eligibility
  • Treatment Period: none
  • Study activities include: Meeting with a study coordinator, completing questionnaires, and NPU (neutral-predictable-unpredictable threat test involving a mild electric shock)
  • Study Duration: 10 weeks
*participants are only asked to come in once at the beginning of this 10-week period and once at the end
