Comparative Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Pharmacotherapy for Anxiety

What we are studying

We are examining how mindfulness meditation compares to an anti-depressant medication in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Time Commitment

Participants engage in eight weeks of active treatment, with twenty-four weeks of total participation.**

Individuals with an anxiety disorder, including: social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or agoraphobia.


$160 total ($20 for each of the eight study visits) + transportation reimbursement.

General Timeline

Screening Procedures: A brief phone screen and an in-person screen with a psychiatrist to determine eligibility.

Treatment Period: Eight week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course OR eight weeks of daily antidepressant medication.*

Study Activities May Include: Screening procedures, appointments with study doctors, and treatment-related activities.

Study Duration: Eight weeks of active treatment with follow-up visits at weeks twelve and twenty-four.**

* Participants will have a 50% chance of being assigned to either the MBSR group or to the medication group

** Follow-up visits in weeks twelve and twenty-four can be done using video conferencing, or over the phone.
