Secondary School - February Edition

Principal

It's hard to believe that 2020 is in full swing! Our students have enjoyed many events over the past month. One of those events was our high school juniors and seniors competing in a friendly game of football. International day was another chance for our students to enjoy themselves in a non-academic format and this week our middle school students will have their first dance. At GUS we want our students to have experiences that are not just academic. It is important for our students to understand that in order to work hard you have to play hard too!! We are happy to support both sides of the spectrum here at GEMS United School.

Assistant Principal

Students have solidified their second semester courses. This change can bring about new teachers, curriculum, and opportunities. Please make sure to seek out teachers to join Google Classroom if you would like to continue to get updates about assignments or assessments. A few weeks ago it was nice to have a community day where we played games, sang songs, and saw each other in a different light. I really enjoyed playing volleyball with everyone. A huge thank you to the counselors for setting it up, teachers for hosting activities, and our students for participating in positively shaping our community. I look forward to another event like this in the near future. Stay tuned!

Attendance

Morning Tardiness:

Please ensure your sons/daughters are arriving with plenty of time to prepare for the learning day. This will help them feel ready and be able to connect with teachers and friends in the morning.

Punctuality shows respect for their fellow classmates and their teachers. Tardiness affects not only the student who is late, but disrupts the entire classroom as well. If your child is late to school in the morning these are being recorded as an unexcused tardy. Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. are considered tardy and will be issued a tardy slip.

Tardiness is recorded and appears on the student's academic report card.

If students are habitually tardy for first period, consequences in accordance with the Student Handbook will be followed.

Self-Regulation: An Important Life Skill

Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions and behavior in a given situation. This includes the ability to avoid highly emotional reactions to situations, the ability to calm oneself down when upset, to handle change in expectations or frustration without losing your cool. As parents we all sometimes struggle with self-regulation...I know I do. Self-regulation skills help children direct their own behavior/feelings and control their reactions in the midst of an unpredictable world.

Self-regulation takes on a whole new meaning as our kids move into middle and high school. New self-regulation situations present themselves at a time when we are experiences changes in the nature of relationships, changes in our physical being and changes as our brain rewires itself for adulthood.

Some other self-regulation tips that may work for your kids include:

  • Rest, Nutrition & Hydration is a proactive way to reduce the risk of emotional meltdowns. We all know what “hangery” means!
  • Visualize a difficult situation (poor grade, friendship/sibling conflict) and the emotional response it usually causes. Breaking down the emotions & the problem helps build the skill of self-regulation.
  • Read about it! There are lots of good resources connected to self-regulation. Ask your counselor
  • Provide opportunities for quiet family time. Kids who get away from screens and interact with others in unstructured environments teach themselves self-regulation skills.
  • Communicate….even when it seems like our teenagers are not interested in talking back.

“Self-Regulation is the core emotional intelligence skill that we can call upon in any situation that causes discomfort to reduce our level of anxiety and re-establish equilibrium.” Jan Johnson

Social/Emotional:

The Negative Effects of Spoiling Children

When children are spoiled we do them a great disservice because they are not being allowed to earn and learn.

Parents are moved by instinct to love, nurture, and provide for their offspring. Because our children are so much a part of us, we want to see them blissfully happy. Also, our own desire to be liked, materialist pressures, and a fervent wish that our children have everything we lacked as youngsters can prompt us to spoil them. However, while it might seem that buying your child expensive gifts will give them fond memories of childhood or that you can heal your emotional wounds by doting on your sons and daughters, you may be unconsciously interfering with your children's evolutional development. One of the most precious gifts you can grant your children is the true independence they gain when they learn to earn what they covet and become stewards of their own happiness. Try allowing your children to experience life to the fullest. Let them work and earn what they want. When the time comes for them to go to college and enter the workforce, you will have the confidence that you have raised a child that can both enter and contribute to society confidently.

When children are not afforded the opportunity to explore self-reliance, to understand that with possession comes price, and to fulfill their own needs, they develop a sense of entitlement that blinds them to the necessity of hard work and the needs of others. We may spoil children because giving them gifts is pleasurable. Or we may want to avoid conflict out of fear that our children won't love us. Yet children who are given acceptance, love, and affection in abundance are often kinder, more charitable, and more responsible than those whose parents accede to their every material demand. They develop a strong sense of self that stretches beyond possessions and the approval of their peers, and as adults they understand that each individual is responsible for building the life they desire. If you find yourself giving in to your child's every whim, ask yourself why. You may discover that you are trying to answer for what you feel is lacking in your own life.

Rearing your children to respect the value of money and self-sufficiency as they grow from infants to young adults is a challenging but rewarding process. It can be difficult to watch a child struggle to meet a personal goal yet wonderful to be by their side as they achieve it. Your choice not to spoil your children will bless you with more opportunities to show them understanding and compassion and to be fully present with them as they journey toward adulthood.

College/University:

The Class of 2020 has submitted 286 applications to 18 different countries this year! We are proud of how hard they have worked and look forward to sharing their acceptances with you later this year.

The College and University Counseling Department will begin to work in greater detail with the Class of 2021 beginning this week. An email was sent out on Thursday. Here it is attached again if you missed it:

As requested, I have attached today’s presentation and other important documents related to university preparations and the services offered at GEMS United School and throughout the GEMS Network.

Here is a summary of what was discussed:

1) Grade 11 meetings with students and parents: Students will meet with the High School Counselor during advisory every week. Students will also have individual meetings with the HS Counselor to discuss academics, summer programs, internships, testing plans, choosing courses for next year, choosing teachers for letters of recommendation, building college lists, etc. Each student is required to meet with the counselor at least twice (once in February/March, and once in May). Parents are also invited to attend these meetings and are encouraged to have their son/daughter schedule the meeting directly on the sign-up sheet outside of my office. There is no need to email me to schedule the meeting. Suggested times for parents to join the conversation are 8-8:30 and 3:30-4pm.

2) Many parents have questions regarding the SAT exam. Please refer to the following link for details on the SAT. Your child’s PSAT scores are also available. You can check your scores and register for upcoming SAT exams using the following link. Your access code will be placed in their e-locker.

3) GEMS has launched a new program known as MyPathtoUni. The initiative provides students with comprehensive college application support, career guidance, unique opportunities and services across all areas relating to university preparation. I suggest checking their event calendar from time to time to see what is happening here in Dubai.

4) Here is a copy of the timeline for Grade 11 into Grade 12 regarding university admissions worldwide.

International Day

International Day was a huge success! Thank you to everyone for taking time out of their weekend to support our community. The booths represented many of the different cultures here at GUS and it was such a treat to sample so many different foods. Families were able to enjoy the day eating, socializing, and having a relaxing time with their loved ones.

“Where you able to try the amazing brisket and truffle Mac and cheese at the USA table during International Day... it was amazing. CarniStore is offering our school a discount, in case you want to try it for the first time or eat it again. SCH-10

Important Information

Dear Parents,

A firm reminder to you and your students that ties are mandatory for students in Grade 3 through 12. We need your help and your student’s help. Please ensure they are in dress code.

Additionally, any outwear must be GEMS US gear—the hoodie, a club or team sweatshirt, a senior jacket, etc. Students are NOT allowed to wear non-GEMS US sweatshirts or sweaters. Teachers have been told to ask students to remove outerwear that is not compliant. Shoes must be all black.

Thank you to every student who has been wearing a tie regularly and following the dress code—we appreciate it! To all others who are not, please follow the dress code. There is no excuse at this point in the year not to be in correct uniform every day.

Sincerely,

The Senior Leadership Team

GEMS Jewels of Kindness

At GEMS US we care about values education and seek to encourage our students to grow and develop in their personal and interpersonal qualities. We also value our partnership with parents: children learn best when there is close collaboration between home and school. We thank you for your continued support and the regular close contact we have between home and school.

At GEMS US we see acts of Kindness daily at school as our students demonstrate care and concern for one another. The value of kindness begins at home and we are excited to recognize the respectful, empathetic, helpful and compassionate acts that our kids show towards their family members and friends outside of school.

Our GEMS US Jewels of Kindness initiative has begun and we are reaching out to parents for support. Please let us know when your child demonstrates an act of kindness at home. Maybe they cleaned up their room without being asked, gave a compliment to someone, or perhaps they just gave you a hug and said they love you. Our children demonstrate kindness each day and we would like to recognize and reinforce this important family value.

How has your son or daughter shown empathy, compassion, respect or helpfulness? Please send your “Jewels of Kindness” to Mr. Murphy at j.murphy_gus@gemsedu.com

We will recognize each student’s special achievement through our Newsletter and our weekly assemblies.

Together we are GEMS United School and we thank you for your continued support!
