Reading, Writing
In this expedition, students used literature and informational text to introduce students to the power of literacy and how people around the world overcome reading challenges. The expedition is divided into three units. In Unit 1, students began to build their close reading skills; they heard stories aloud, read works in their entirety, and read more challenging excerpts closely. In Unit 2, students considered how geography and where one lives in the world affects how one accesses books. In Unit 3, students focused on what it means to be a proficient and independent reader. At the start of the expedition, students visit the Northside branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. At the library they learned about the services the library provides to the community, read books, and received a library card. One of the projects students completed in this expedition was creating a reading strategies bookmark. GEMS printed and donated a selection of these bookmarks to the library for children in the community.
