Art, Research, Writing
In this expedition, students experience a journey of learning about the Monarch butterfly, writing facts and opinions, creating artwork, and contributing to the butterfly population and the Central Ohio community. Follow their migration from research, to writing, and then to creating a final product.
Research
The expedition began with research on butterflies. Students recorded what they learned in a journal throughout the expedition and even completed self-assessments of their work.
Writing
Using the information learned, students wrote a description about the Monarch butterfly. Their paragraph needed to contain four facts about the Monarch butterfly, use complete sentences, and have correct punctuation.

Art Project
Student created their own scientific illustrations of butterflies. These illustrations were done as realistic photo studies. Students focused on symmetry, detail, proportions, and color blending to make their butterflies look as real as possible.
Final Product
Students combined their research, writing, and artwork to create a final product- Butterfly Garden Seed packets, to provide to the community. The front of the packet holds a an image of a student's artwork of a butterfly. The back of the package contains the student's opinion writing on why it is important to plant the seeds for butterflies.
Butterfly Garden
Another product of this expedition is the Butterfly Garden located next to the playground at GEMS. The 2nd grade students planted seeds to grow plants that would attract Monarchs. Next time you're near the Butterfly Garden keep your eyes open for the beautiful Monarch butterfly!
