Week Thirty Five - June 9th, 2023
Dear Parents,
The first news to share is that we now have a remarkable nine shortlistings for the SchoolsCompared.com Top Schools awards 2023-24! Since I wrote to you last week, we have also been shortlisted for Best School in UAE for STEAM, Innovation, Girls’ Education, Happiness/Wellbeing, and School Most Loved by Parents. This extraordinary number of shortlistings speaks volumes for the whole GIS community. We certainly have a name for ourselves as a school with purpose, dynamism and opportunities, and I say well done to students, staff and parents.
It is always a pleasure to promote GIS and the IB. This week I spoke on behalf of GEMS to managers at JP Morgan, who were interested in the educational journey for families. Fortunately, they didn’t ask me anything about financial services! I was presenting alongside the university counsellor from GWA, and topics ranged from transition, to changing curricula, global opportunities and pathways to success.
I am delighted to report that Alexander Rushika (Grade 8) has won the US Kids European Golf Championship, held in Scotland. This is a tremendous achievement, and we are proud that Alexander has managed such a feat. (Alexander - far left)
Finally, I have been fortunate enough to have a sneak preview of this year’s Yearbook, and I can tell you that it is tremendous. Mr Lewis and teams have done a superb job and I recommend it as a wonderful memory of the year.
Kind regards and have a good weekend.
Hello everyone!
This week GISPA had our Year-End meeting and it was great to see you there.
We looked back on the last school year with all it's community events, and also had a quick look forward into next year. Thank you for the ideas and feedback you gave us.
We are very happy to announce that some new parents have volunteered to join GISPA for the next academic year; they will get introduced properly to you all next year.
In terms of exisiting GISPA members, next year Wessam will take over the role of GISPA President as Thera will be leaving the UAE. Thera and her family had a wonderful time in GIS, and Dubai, and are sad to say goodbye. She thanks you all for making the years so memorable!
Enjoy the last few weeks before this year ends and have a great weekend everyone!
From all of GISPA
On Tuesday our U12 girls basketball squad welcomed Raffles International School, where they were looking to keep their hopes of winning the league alive. Another fantastic team performance led them to a 16-15 victory meaning that it all comes down to next week with a winner takes all fixture against GEMS First Point. We wish you all the best girls!
On Wednesday our U11 girls basketball squad welcomed GEMS Wellington International School for their second fixture of the season. After a heavy defeat at the hands of JESS Jumeirah last week, it was clear that the girls were not going to allow that to happen again, and from the start played with a high intensity and work rate. The girls came up short this time, but will take great pride from their improved performance ahead of next week’s game.
On Thursday our U14 girls basketball squad travelled to DESC for their Division 1 quarter final playoff game. The girls were unlucky from the get go - one of their players fell ill and was not able to travel with the squad. The girls stuck with DESC, who topped their league, for 3 quarters before 2 starting players fouled out. Two others had to be careful for the 2nd half, having had 4 fouls to their name. As the first ever team to play at this level in the school’s history, the girls can hold their heads high and be proud of what they have achieved.
Also on Thursday our U11 boys hosted Sunmarke in the Indoor Sports Hall. After a rude awakening last week, like the girls, the boys looked a lot more up for this fixture. They worked well as a team and defended brilliantly. The boys were very unlucky coming up just short, losing by 1 basket, but again will take huge positives from their performance.
Finally, I would like to wish our U14 basketball boys and their coaches Mr. Chris and Mr. Keith all the best in their Division 1 playoff semifinal against DESC on Wednesday. I’m sure you will all do the school proud!
