Week Seven - October 13th, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.Β
With COP28 on the horizon, it was very pleasing to see GIS students so well represented at Green Planet this week. GIS students Roman (G2) and Serena (G3) were guests of honour at the opening ceremony of the new Green Planet outdoor play experience. They were introduced live on Dubai 92, where breakfast-show host Jono thanked GIS for our support of sustainable initiatives, before the children were invited to plant some seeds in celebration of the opening. They were the first children ever to play on the new playground, before a private viewing of some Green Planet exhibitions, which Serena described as βAmazing, one of the best days ever!β. Well done Serena and Rowan and my thanks to Mr. Lawrence for accompanying.
GIS is known to be a collaborative school, so it was a pleasure to welcome GEMS Middle Leaders from many different GEMS schools to a training event held at GIS on Wednesday. Middle Leaders have such an important role in school life and their influence on our students is immeasurable, so it is wonderful that GEMS offer this professional development. Well done to all involved and thank you to Ms Danielle West (Vice President, Global Leadership Management and Development) for selecting GIS as the location and to Ms Abeer Sakka (Senior Manager, CPD) for presenting.
Ms Emma organized something very special for our drama students this week and we are grateful to her for this. In her words, βOur cast members of Matilda had the amazing opportunity to engage in a theatre workshop led by two actors from The Royal Shakespeare Company who are currently on tour and performing Matilda the Musical at Dubai Opera! Matthew Rowland (Mr. Wormwood) and Katie Lee (Ensemble) led the students through a number of vocal and physical dramatic activities within this three hour workshop, which also included learning the actual choreography from the production itself! It was such an exciting morning for students which concluded with a Q & A with Matthew and Katie. We would like to extend our gratitude to both of them for their time, enthusiasm and work with our students. It makes us even more excited to watch our characters come to life on the stage next March!β
Finally, the highlight of the week, which will be recorded for posterity, and also live streamed to all students, is the GIS 10th Birthday celebration! It was wonderful to have so many esteemed guests with us, from Dr Rana, Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, through to founding families, staff and students. My thanks to Ms Aamna and team for the preparations. Please see below some photos and clips of this historic day for the school.
