Week Thirty Two - May 19th, 2023
Dear Parents,
I was so pleased to hear that our musicians had volunteered to be part of a GEMS orchestra and performed so well. I am grateful to my colleague and neighbor at WEK, Mr Campbell, for inviting GIS to take part and to Mr Richard for his preparatory work and time. Well done to all and please see the clip below.
On the subject of the arts, what lovely pictures we now see in our main reception, thanks to our students’ creativity and Ms Panayota’s idea to have a lovely display before Arts Week. Please do take a look when you are next here.
It was an honor to receive a third shortlisting for GIS this week, this time for Best School in the UAE for Post-16 Education. This reflects not only our different pathways and personalized options, but the creativity of the secondary leadership team and the hard work from so many students and teachers. Well done all and good luck!
On the subject of post-16 education and options, we are always looking beyond GIS to seek best practice and any links that may be useful for our students. Ms Mariona is currently investigating a business & sustainable management university in Switzerland, which may provide another interesting pathway. Ms Amanda and I visited the excellent Emirates Academy for Hospitality and Management, to discuss a possible post-16 pathway and internships. It was a pleasure to be so warmly welcomed – clearly many institutions would love to attract our students.
We are conscious that our facilities must always be cutting-edge and provide opportunities for our students to excel. I am therefore happy to let you know that we are developing a new sports area, which will allow a previously underused astroturf to become a roofed, air-conditioned sports hall, which can be used all year round. Also, we are creating an amazing Center of Excellence space in our Primary School, comprising design, robotics, coding and STEM. So many students will benefit. I hope to show you pictures in due course.
Finally, service for others is a fundamental part of an IB education. I believe in students thinking for themselves and acting for others, so it was impressive to see two Grade 9 students (Amber D and Reyansh M) helping in a variety of admin sections of the school. Well done and thank you both.
Kind regards and have a good weekend.
On Monday our U12 boys travelled to Raffles World Academy for their 3rd game of the season. There were some great individual performances against a tough side, but in the end the boys came up just short. As a newly formed team who have only been together a short time this team continues to grow week on week.
On Wednesday our U14 basketball boys travelled to Gems Wellington Silicon Oasis to build on their huge win from last week. This week the boys did not perform to the highs of last week and the score was a lot tighter. However, the boys dug deep to grind out a 26-22 win. The boys will be looking for an improved performance against Hartland next week to all but secure a place in the Playoffs.
Ms. Hadeel took the A&B swim squads to a competition at DAA. This was a friendly competition in order to give as many swimmers as possible the chance to swim in a gala situation. Although there were no official placings or times it was great to see so many swimmers performing so well.
On Thursday the U14 basketball girls and coach Pam welcomed Safa Community School for their second game of the season in Division 1. The girls have worked hard with their coach after losing their opening game and put on a very organized and disciplined display resulting in a 31-17 victory for the girls.
Lastly, I would like to wish our U15 cricket squad luck as they take on DIA Emirates Hills in the quarter final of the DASSA league on Monday.
